Rating: Summary: Very good informative. Review: Very informative, gives a good sense of what to expect in terms of development. Good references and information about illness. A bit dry at times, but I return to this book again and again.
Rating: Summary: A great help Review: I bought this book after our pediatrician recommended it and it is a great resource. Lots of good, sound information for parents. Another terrific (and a touching) read for parents and expecting parents is "Baby E.R." by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Parents can never have too much information about how to care for their most precious treasures, especially when the unthinkable happens.
Rating: Summary: The best baby book Review: In my opinion, this is the best of the early baby books (and it seems like I have them all.) It is EXTREMELY comprehensive and educational. More importantly, to me, is that it is very comforting and calming. Unlike all the books that have month-by-month development charts that freak you out if your baby is lacking any of the skills in the chart, this tells you in more general ways what your child should be learning and doing at various points in time. For real advice about illness, I would recommend this over any other book too.
Rating: Summary: Med school Mommy opinion Review: I buy this book for all of my friends who have babies. You would(or maybe wouldn't) be surpised at how little is "common sense" in parenting. This book assumes you know nothing, so tells you all the basics...breastfeeding...bowel mov'ts...growth charts...immunizations. It has boxes w/ where the AAP stands on various issues which I find interesting and appropriate. I also have a BS in Child Development. The phsical and cognitive developmental information is appropriate for the various ages. I was somewhat dissappointed w/ the scanty baby-proofing information. This is a good book if you can give only one.
Rating: Summary: From A to Z about your baby Review: The first time I saw this book when it arrived by mail, I was surprised with those big book. When I could find a time to read this book. So I kept the book in my drawer and I almost forget about it until one day my daughter pediactric said that our daughter need to get a tuberculosis test and I heard from my friend that this test is very painfull especially for a baby. So we need another opinion about this test and then sudenly I remember that we have this book. So I looked in the index to find anything about tuberculosis for baby and everything is there. It is so clear and very informative for a common person like us who know nothing about medical term. And of course we want the best for our children. So from that moment, I always give my time to read this useful book so I know more and more about my baby development. And everytime I read this book, there is always something new that I never know before. If you want to know from A to Z about your child, this book is the answer.
Rating: Summary: Don't Get This -- Buy Dr. Sears' Book Instead! Review: Please don't use this as your sole or primary source of infant/child care and development information!First of all, it incorporates an enormous amount of MISinformation, which is shocking considering it's written by various members of the AAP. On the other hand, most of them probably aren't raising their own babies all day, that's what their wives and housekeepers are for! The most egregious errors have to do with breastfeeding information, sleep management, and soothing techniques. This is a considerable problem, because quite frankly, what are you doing with the baby for the first several years if not dealing with food, poop, and a crying kid? I have four kids, and as far as I'm concerned, the best book available for learning about your baby and child is Dr. Sears "Baby Book". Now, go kiss that adorable baby!
Rating: Summary: The Owner's Manual For Children Review: We were given this book by the hospital where my children were delivered. As a pediatric nurse, you wouldn't think I would need to refer to this book often but because of my love for this book my husband quickly began referring to it as "The Owner's Manual". This book is a wonderful reference tool for any parent to own!!
Rating: Summary: great overall guide Review: I use this book at least weekly to answer specific questions or just for perusing, and it is always helpful. It is organized well, is easy to understand, and has just enough depth on a broad range of subjects relating to babies and young kids.
Rating: Summary: saves you calls to the pediatrician! Review: Very helpful and resourceful. It will anser many questions you have in caring for and raising your baby. Give it as a shower gift! My child is 19 months old and the book is well worn. I also teach a parenting class and recommend it to all of my students.
Rating: Summary: Buy another book Review: I do not like this book for the one fact that it does not break it down into age groups (1 mo, 2 mo, etc.) It groups a general age together and that's it. The index in the back is not that easy to read, it has to many different sub sections and other areas to check. I would recomend the book "What to expect when you are expecting - the first year." I got this as a gift, so I felt kind of inclined to use it, but only as a second opinion if I cannot find what I need in my other book.
