Summary: An important resource
Review: "Why Boys Don't Talk and Why We Care : A Mother's Guide to Connection" is an important resource for both parents and educators. The strengths of this book are well described by the previous reviewers. However, one important limitation is that the connection between the "limited range of emotional expression for boys" and current educational trends was not sufficiently explored. This is ironic since one of the authors (Shaffer) is a gender equity specialist with the Mid-Atlantic Equity Center.

Is the fact that boys are significantly less likely than girls to take language and literature classes in high school a cause, or a symptom, of the problems discussed in this book? Is the fact that boys are less likely than girls to both read and write for pleasure a factor? Can schools address the problem of emotional communication by addressing the gender gaps associated with both curricular and extracurricular creative expression? This work would have been significantly enhanced if these and related questions were given more attention. Nevertheless, this still remains an important resource and hopefully will stimulate more work in this area.

Summary: I keep this book on my night table and often review it!
Review: I am so grateful that I found this book before my sons were out of high school. The book combines the perfect blend of practical tips and solid research. I have loaned my copy to so many friends that I finally started to buy them for gifts. If you have a son, I recommend this little gem to you.

Summary: If you can read only one book on boys, this is it!!...
Review: I enjoyed the assessments and the realistic tips on how to communicate with your son. The book is filled with photos and side-bars. My son even picked it up, and that's quite an endorsement. I hope the authors write more books on parenting.

Summary: What a great book for mothers of sons
Review: I enjoyed this book tremendously, not only as a mother of three sons, but as a psychotherapist actively working with many of the issues presented in the book. As a mother, it helps me to realize that I should listen more to my gut and trust my instincts to stay close to my sons. As a professional, I believe the book adds a thoughtful new way to think about the adolescent task of separation and individuation. As a professonal and parent, I support the idea that adolescence is a time for renegotiating a new relationship with one's parents rather than severing ones relationship with his parents. This is a very valuable book. I loved it!

Summary: Useless statistics
Review: I found this book virtually useless. Included numerous statistical informaion, without much useful advise or guidance.

Summary: Great blend of intelligence and readibility!!
Review: I love this book. It is a real gem. I have bought it for many of my friends for Christmas. The authors discuss with great clarity, issues that I face everyday with my son. While I often don't finish many parenting books that I buy, I have thoroughly read this book once and have referred back to it several times. The sidebars and excercises are fun to do and the checklists and bibliography are invaluable- I highly recommend it.

Summary: My favorite "BOY" book
Review: Often I buy self help books and read the introduction only, but this book is different. It is filled with practical suggestions and interactive assessments that I find very helpful. If you can buy only one book about adolescent boys, this is it.
