Summary: Buy this if you are thinking of being a full time parent!
Review: I left my job to be a full time mom to my daughter, who is now 10 months old. Even though I love being with my daughter and KNOW I am doing the right thing for us, I have felt moments of self doubt.. After reading this book and taking it to heart, I have the confidence to face the world and be proud of my decision. The authors have even included a section on how to address the once dreaded "what do you do?" question - now I can answer with pride instead of hesitation! They also address other important issues, such as how to avoid isolation and transferring work skills to life at home with kids (and vice versa if you decide to return to the workforce later).

Summary: This book really helped me.
Review: I received Staying Home as a gift when I had been home with my first child for about 6 months. At that time, I was trying to decide whether or not to go back to work, and this book was exactly what I needed to read. Staying Home put into words the feelings that I had in my heart about being home with my son. It helped me to put things into perspective and to begin to take seriously my role as a mother at home.Over the past six years, I've recommended this book to dozens of other new mothers. And everytime I'm feeling a bit underappreciated in my role and need a boost, I pick up the book again and feel refreshed and renewed in my decision.

Summary: Beware of hidden agendas....
Review: I was so disappointed with this book, and am surprised at the number of fabulous reviews it received. Every page demanded that I revel in my "feminist roots." For any would-be stay at home moms interested in supporting their husbands by keeping house, fixing dinner, and doing laundry in addition to taking care of the kids--this is not the book for you. It encourages you to not "give in" to the stereotypes and does not acknowledge that there may in fact be jobs just for dads and jobs just for moms. I know this is not a popular view, maybe I'm the only one around who thinks this. Your husband, however, may not be overjoyed if you take this book to heart!!! Also, for any mothers seeking a more spiritual path to staying at home, this book advocated TOTAL CONTROL by you in your decisions--really letting your own self-interests direct your routine instead of those around you or giving up those self-interests in pursuit of a higher calling. Even though I consider myself to be a feminist in many ways, this book was TOO MUCH.

Summary: A Guide For Every Woman Considering Motherhood
Review: In Staying Home, authors Darcie Sanders and Martha M. Bullen have taken a wealth of surveys, statistics, anecdotal evidence, and plain old common sense to put together a guide that every woman considering motherhood should read cover to cover.

What can a professional woman expect her life to be like after she's ditched the 9-to-5 world and become a stay-at-home mother? The transition will effect every aspect of her life, from relationships with husband, family and friends, to her own self-image and loss of professional identity. Other women may question the stay-at-home mother's choice and offer little support for her decision. But it isn't a bleak picture the authors have painted - on the contrary, the choice to become a full-time parent can be a liberating one. There are plenty of support groups and chances for mothers to network. This book goes the extra mile in giving women vital information to make intelligent and meaningful decisions in regard to themselves and their children's best interests. I wish I could have read this book about fifteen years ago, before I became a mom!

Summary: Great if you have a baby not if you have an older child
Review: It was well written, but I was diasappointed because I was not
choosing to not go back to work after maternity leave, I was quitting after 5 years of working so, much of the advice and problems did not aply to me. It sorta made me feel guilty for not quitting sooner.

It seems all the books out there focus on babies. Well they do grow up and I had a whole different set of issues than diapers and play groups. I was lonely and wanted to know what to do with my days now that my daughter was in school all day.

Maybe I am not being fair with 2 stars because it was good for what it was - a baby book.

Summary: Staying Home got me through the transition from work to home
Review: Making the decision to stay home with my two children after a 12-year demanding, successful career that I loved was very difficult for me. It was a decision I never expected to make. I started to read Staying Home and I couldn't put it down. By the time I was done, I had a much clearer picture of the next step in my life -- another phase that I could now see was just part of the journey. Staying Home laid out the challenges and the benefits, and made me see that this was a positive choice I could move towards with my self-respect and my identity fully intact!

Summary: This one's a keeper
Review: More & more women are choosing to hang up their briefcases to stay home & raise their children & '...motherhood may be the most controversial career you can have these days...'. In fact, US census figures show that the majority of women with children under five are staying home or working part-time.

How can this book help you? For starters it includes the most up-to-date inforamtion on mothers' support organizations, websites & work-at-home resources.

Secondly, it discusses the most important issues your have to consider when making your decision.

Thirdly, it talks about adjusting to the changing relationships with your spouse, your family & friends.

Fourthly, it brings up how to cope with the fear of isolation & reduced income.

Fifthly, it helps you boost your new self-image, & lastly, it shows how to work from home & points out the value of flexible work options.

Much is covered by this modest book although the one section which had me riveted was not long & started on page 108: Sex Role Stereotypes and the Division of Labor. Read it & weep! Good stuff!
