Summary: Understanding Children
Review: A must have for new parents. The information and colorful pages are great for those late nights and early mornings. This book has been very helpful to both my husband and me especially since it is not wordy and the pages are informative with great illustrations.

Summary: An outstanding entertaining resource!
Review: As a mother of a five and seven year old, I didn't feel like I had to run and buy a ton of baby books when I got pregnant with my third. Because of all the running around I do on a daily basis, I find it difficult to take the time and read a book on children and child development. When I saw Understanding Children, I soon realized it was the perfect book for me. I can quickly find the information I am looking for without having to read paragraph after paragraph of jargon and irrelevant information. I consistently use it as a reference when I'm not sure about an issue or simply when looking to learn more about my kids.

Summary: Very insightful...
Review: As a mother of three, one of whom is still a baby, and a pediatrician, I found this book quite insightful, and would recommend it to all.
Younger parents will find the information easily digestible, and more experienced ones will find better methods of child rearing than they were previously aware of. (I found myself picking up some new tidbits even after three children and a career taking care of others' kids.)
I think the author has done a good job in communicating new and important facts, but not in a fashion that is daunting or overly academic. All parents should be able to grasp its contents - something not often found in the genre.
As for my experience with others' opinions on the work, I have heard a number of glowing comments from the families reading the copies in my waiting room.

Summary: Understanding Children
Review: As a person interested in the development of young children and an aunt of young nephews and nieces, I do believe that it is important for me to be educated about topics relevant to the stages of a child's growth. Understanding Children is amazingly informative and user-friendly. This is a must-have book and certainly a resource that will prove useful for years to come!

Summary: I love it!
Review: As a woman in the process of starting a family I have looked through the pages of just about every pregnancy & baby book out there. Many are very detailed and while I did buy a couple of those I found this one to be refreshing. There was a sense of calm that I felt reading it that I didn't feel reading the others. The book doesn't assume you know too much, which is perfect for new parents who really don't. I found it to be very comprehensive and very helpful. No other baby book addressed the issues of grandparent relationships, diversity and discipline issues which are concerns of mine. It was refreshing to read some quick tips in those areas and many others I know will be valuable in raising my family.

Summary: Fantastic and fun!
Review: As an "experienced" parent of two, I already have a shelf of parenting books that read like college textbooks. What a treat to find this book! Understanding Children presents a great overview of so much information in such a unique way that I found myself learning things I thought I already knew. Presenting the content visually through graphs, charts, photos, diagrams and lists is refreshing, too. The practical information is also a big help, like the checklist for how to interview a child care provider, what to expect at wellness visits, etc. I highly recommend this book for any parent, grandparent, expecting parent, or caring aunt or uncle out there.

Summary: I love it!
Review: I am an expectant parent and absolutely love this book. I have been using it throughout my pregnancy for prenatal tips and am now preparing for parenthood by reading into the rest of the book including what I need to buy, healthy sleep habits, feeding, child care and more. I highly recommend it to all parents of young children.

Summary: Basic parental reference -- no more, no less
Review: I bought this book as a gift, and received some comments which I'll paraphrase here:

This book is a _very_ basic, inexpensive reference, designed for expectant parents who know very little about the process of parenting, and who don't know how to use (or who simply feel intimidated by) traditional reference books. It is especially good for young couples who are approaching parenthood, but may not be quite sure just what they're getting into.

The color-coded index, which is as simply designed as possible, can still be confusing for people accustomed to a standard index and table of contents. Likewise, more informed parents will probably be disappointed at the basic level of information provided in these books, and will want to know much more about child-rearing and early development.

Still, as a parental reference, this book is at least adequate -- and for its target audience, it will be absolutely indispensible. Add two stars to my rating if you think you might be part of that audience, and buy this book.

One caveat: This book contains advertisements, although they're tucked in the back, away from the parenting information. Still, for some readers the very presence of ads may render the book suspect. If you're one of those readers, consider yourself forwarned.

Summary: It's Great!
Review: I love this book! With limited time for reading, I find the format so easy to use. I've gone to it again and again when looking for infromation regarding my young child. I don't think any new parent should be without this!
