Rating: Summary: From the author of Parents Do Make A Difference Review: Have you ever wondered what you really should be doing to help your children become the best they can be? If so, you're not alone. It's always the top question I get from hundreds of parents and teachers at my workshops. And so for ten years I've been on a quest to find the answer. I read hundreds of articles about success, surveyed 10,000 teachers in my seminars and interviewed top child experts. The same eight skills were consistently mentioned. The book is a step-by-step blueprint on how you can teach these eight critical skills that research says make the biggest difference on enhancing our children's personal, social, motivational and moral competence. I also tested the effectiveness of teaching these skills to 1040 students at three diverse schools in North America. The results were profound: aggression was dramatically reduced, academic behaviors improved and prosocial behaviors increased. The ideas are all tried and proven. They do work! And now you can teach them to your kids. Chapter 1: Positive Self-esteem helps kids develop an optimistic, "I can do it attitude."Chapter 2: Cultivating Strengths helps kids recognize their strengths, compensate for their limitations and enhance self-confidence.Chapter 3: Communicating helps kids learn to listen, get their message across and understand others views.Chapter 4: Problem-solving helps kids learn a repertoire of skills to solve problems and make responsible choices.Chapter 5: Getting Along helps kids be more cooperative, develop friendship skills and deal with stormy relationships.Chapter 6: Goal-setting helps children be more self-motivated by learning to set goals to achieve success.Chapter 7: Not Giving Up guides children to completing what they want to achieve even though it may be difficult and develop perseverance.Chapter 8: Caring enhances children's empathy and sensitivity towards others' feelings. Each chapter is filled with dozens of practical ways you can teach these skills. I know your time is tight so only the most realistic ideas are included. All ideas were also first shared with hundreds of parents and teachers at my workshops. In all over 1054 ideas to boost potential are provided including: videos and literature that embody the skills to discuss with kids, fun family activities, case studies of children whose behavior dramatically improved from learning the skills, simple checklists to assess child's skill levels, and instant techniques and "success tips"--all based on the lastest research on success. I wanted to give you dozens of possibilities so you could choose the ones you feel would work best with your child.Raising happy, thriving, productive and well-adjusted children is our great challenge as teachers and parents. Teaching your kids these eight critical skills research says matter most in school and in life will help them now and forever. It's never too early or late to begin so now is perfect. Thank you for your interest! Remember, you do make a difference!

Rating: Summary: The Best Parenting Book Out Review: It's about time a book told us what we can do right for our kids instead of emphasizing everything we're doing wrong. This is packed with solutions and fabulous ideas. I'm loving it!
Rating: Summary: A must for parents and teachers! Review: Once again, Michele Borba has provided excellent suggestions for helping the village that raises the child. I appreciate Dr. Borba's book from the perspective of both elementary school educator and parent. The "eight success skills" are necessary for all of our children! We can all help. This book would be excellent for a parent group who would like to discuss each skill and how they are being successful in enhancing their children's social skills. This book would be an excellent reference book for any elementary teacher as it wonderfully complements Borba's book Esteem Builders. I can see schools working closely with parent groups as the skills are taught and emphasized at both school and at home. It would make a wonderful curriculum for a social skills program!
Rating: Summary: Practical and fun! Review: Parenting is hard enough without having to spend all my time trying to figure out the latest greatest parenting book! Parents Do Make A Difference is exceptional and I truly believe it has all the elements a parent needs to overcome all the difficulties we encounter raising kids. Dr. Borba's book is so practical, and I loved the stories used to illustrate her premise. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for the right answers, not the best theories!
Rating: Summary: More Than A Book... It's A Handbook Review: Parents Do Make a Difference is more than a book, it's a handbook. Dr. Borba uses extensive use of checklists, exercises, helpful suggestions and real life examples to help parents teach the skills of personal, emotional and motivational success to their children. In this book, Dr. Borba has woven personal experiences, and sometimes complex behavioral theories, into messages that are clear and comprehensive for all parents. Readers will appreciate the practicality of the author's approach. For example, Dr. Borba points out, early in the book, that family conditions help nurture the self-esteem of children. Meaning, all of the exercise and tips in this book may be meaningless if the parent doesn't have the ability to authentically mirror the behaviors they are attempting to teach their children. To assist in further action for parents, she has also included several resources (books, videos, and web sites) at the end of each chapter. ...
