Summary: Enlightening!
Review: Insightful, honest, straightforward, and wonderfully well written (I read it in 2/3 days and English is not my native language!), this book helped me immensely in the quest for understanding and making peace with myself. I recommend it highly to all, especially men, that are searching for a sane grounding on which to base their personal growth, their relationships, and their creativity.

Summary: Clear, concise description of insidious form of depression
Review: While Terrence Real's intention may have been to describe the conditions of and reactions to depression in males, his description of "covert depression" applies to many of us who were trained to ignore our feelings in favor of "making it" in the world. His descriptions of the whys and wherefores of grandiose behavior as a response to depression hit home. A wonderful, clarifying, groundbreaking look at depression and its many manifestations and the impact it has on our lives; and yet another clear insistence that connection to others is the path to finding the joy and happiness that life has to offer.

Summary: Terrence Real's Book: Revolutionary and Accurate!!
Review: I have read this book more times than I can count. Terrence Real strikes a chord and reveals a truth about depression in men and the societal norms (sustained by both men and women) which keep men isolated and locked in a vicious cycle of "covert" depression. Real's ideas may one day form the essential core from which all study and understanding of the changing roles of men and boys in the 20th -- 21st century are derived. He is an author and therapist who is way ahead of the curve in his chosen profession.

Summary: Very insightful and relevant.
Review: I found this book to be very informative and relevant to the inner mind set of many men. It helped me to understand my own feelings and the reasons why other men, I know, act the way they do. Some of the abuses were extreme and not related to me or anyone I know but still they were of interest. I must say that this was not an easy read mainly due to some of the words the author used which I had to research

Summary: Excellent, over the top, poignant for our time.
Review: Although the examples of the men treated in the book are quite violent and beyond that which I have experienced in my family, I find this book to be a key to understanding myself (a woman), my partner, my family, my culture and the world. It unveils the truth that most of us ARE depressed in this war-torn world, and most excitingly, it points the road toward healing in no more hopeful way than showing that the most brutal of us can be understood and drawn out, the human retrieved. I am filled with HOPE for the future. This book is a ground-breaking one for our time, and a significant and powerful key. Thank-you Mr. Real.

Summary: A start to understanding men's angers and addictions
Review: Having spent most of a professional career dealing with men's anger problems and how they can connect to addictions and illnesses Real's book leads the way to understanding the connections. As a seasoned therapist he has put into words my observations and understanding very well. I would recommend it to any therapist dealing with men dealing with aggression and addiction. The answers are here.

Summary: Reaches the male "sore spots" in a way they can't ignore
Review: Although a professional therapist, Terrence Real is blessedly free from jargon or the straightjacket of professional preconceptions. His language and his ideas speak directly to men who are overtly or covertly struggling with depression and, once caught, his book will hold them by its intelligence. He reaches the male "sore spots" in a way they cannot ignore and which should move many to seek help. The best hope yet for cracking the shell of masculinity's high achievers.

Summary: Real talk about real issues concerning males
Review: Helping people understand that male addictive behavior may be the result of untreated depression is an eye opener for both lay people and professionals. The reality of "self-medication" through substance abuse or rage abuse puts male behavior back into the hands of the man himself. How we chose to deal with our psychic pain IS a choice but not if we don't see the underlying cause. Just as depression can look like rage in men it can also look that way in women. Real's groundbreaking role as someone looking at men and depression should not be overlooked because of gender biases.

Summary: A must read for most men and people in relationship to men.
Review: After I got into this book, on almost every page there were case histories that resonated with either my personal experience or observations. I think that this book can be a critical aid in helping men to deal with the burdens they've carried all of their lives and in helping those who love men or are in relation to them understand and possibly help the men in their lives.

Summary: An amazing read....
Review: This book provides an enlightening look at masculinity and the myths and stereotypes we all face as men. It becomes real as Terrence Real describes actual therapeutic experiences and compares them with his own life. I enjoyed this book..
