Rating: Summary: Not what I was expecting Review: I was really looking forward to reading this book for some relief of the motherhood blues, but there was very little to be found in this book. The book did have a few funny moments, but the "girlfriend" references were too much. This book doesn't really have any quality advice and your precious time could be better spent doing anything besides reading this book!
Rating: Summary: Yes, it's the gorey details that no one will tell you... Review: I wasn't thrilled with this book. It tended toward a Western, non-involved approach to pregnancy and childbirth. If you have no doubt that you want the epidural and episiotomy, then this book speaks to you. But if you're like me, you might want to at least *try* to forego drugs and a high-tech birth, and you might like the idea of sleeping with your baby (or other manifestations of attachment parenting, to which the author gives no credit). In that case, Mrs. Iovine gives a bit of information that might be somewhat helpful, but she writes as though she can't imagine for the life of her why someone wouldn't want an epidural. (And if you're anything but married to a well-off man, you won't find much for your situation in here.) She and her Girlfriends, to whom she refers often, seemed entirely too concerned with stretch marks and weight gain; I can't tell you how many times weight comes up (she is a former Playboy model, so perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised). I hadn't given a thought about the weight I'd gain, or later try to lose, until I read this book--and then I was almost paranoid. The author also was preoccupied with doing pregnancy neatly, painlessly, fashionably, and expensively--fine, if you have the money. The details she "shares" with her readers, a.k.a. her Girlfriends, are indeed the gorey ones. But her attitude about them is to take the easy way out. I should say, I liked her writing style. She wrote in a casual conversational tone that was intelligent and often humorous. Some of her advice was useful, but there wasn't much that I haven't read elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Clever Review: As an expectant (and first-time) father, I found it added some useful perspective to what my wife was going through and would be going through when our daughter was born. Funny as heck, but not for the squeamish. I can imagine the equivalent book for expecting dads :-)
Rating: Summary: She's Our Bible Review: Every bit as hilarious and wonderful as The Girlfriend's Guide To Pregnancy. She makes you feel as if you're not the only one going through this and helps you to realize that there's no one right way to raise a child and that babies don't break if you deviate from what the Pregnancy and Baby Nazis believe. In other words "You already know more than you think you do." or "Don't try and raise your child from a book." Her extensive chapter on post-partum depression is the best I've seen, even in the "medical" books. I would recommend this book to fathers, mothers, grandparents, anyone in close contact with a baby.
Rating: Summary: A witty must read for new moms Review: I found this book as well as the Girlfriends Guide To Pregnancy to be very helpful and funny.I love the authers writing style as I found myself laughing out loud many times. You get the feeling that you are not alone in the many doubts and fears that all new moms suffer through.I hope that she writes more books.I love her style!
Rating: Summary: A must read for every mother to be and new mother!!! Review: This book is a must read. The girlfriends are funny, and don't hold anything back. This book was great, and it really stuck out in my mind after all the other books I have read on motherhood. The girlfriends are straight out with you and tell you like it is. Which is what we really want to know! Put this book on your list, and read it first!! If you are expecting and reading this, don't let it scare you though. Don't you really want to know what everything is really going to be like!! This book tells you about the hospital stay, birthing experience, postpartum issues...and loads of other things!!! Don't pass this book up!!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful - very funny and consoling! Review: I read this book when I returned home from the hospital. Even though I was sleep deprived, I couldn't put this book down. I experienced several things Iovine writes about. Reading the book really was like having a heart-to-heart with a girlfriend. She is great - she lays everything about being a first time Mom out on the table. She makes you feel normal after you've been through a life-changing event. I'm going to give this book to all my girlfriends who will soon be first time Moms.
Rating: Summary: Attention new mommies: Buy This Book Review: I've got a 12-inch stack of infant and child care books on my nightstand and this one is going on top. This is the perfect book for confused Mommies desperately searching for the Holy Grail of parenthood--hint, it doesn't exist! Iovine's writing speaks directly to the heart of what all new parents are really wondering about. She's not afraid to get into the emotional nitty gritty. My husband and I read most of the book out loud to each other and loved it. She hits the highs and lows of parenthood on the head while giving you ego-strokes and warm fuzzies. Suddenly, I don't feel so inadequate! Thanks Vicki!
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: I laughed, I cried... This is a refreshing, funny realistic yet optimistic book for weary mommies.
Rating: Summary: somewhat entertaining and some helpful tidbits Review: I read this book in my eighth month of pregnancy. At first, I was entertained and relieved to read a lighter-hearted pregnancy book. But by chapter two, I was starting to crave useful information rather than funny anecdotes that usually refer to pop culture and tv (two things that are already overstated in our society thank you very much). By chapter 3, I was annoyed and wishing I had bought one of the other recommended books. Overall, perhaps a fun book for those that want to be entertained but get the facts from another source.
