Rating: Summary: If you had only one book for your little one, try this one.. Review: When my oldest daughter was one, I was reading her Goodnight Moon. When my youngest was 2, I was reading both of them Charlotte's Web and Curious George and Shel Silverstein. When they were just starting school, all their classmates would come to birthday parties and make and decorate cupcakes which they considered the best cupcakes in all the world. And, the next day they would eat them at school. When my little ones were sick, chicken alphabet soup was the best thing and making paper hats and airplanes were their solice. When they were bored we played finger games and made music out of glasses, pots and saucepans.I wanted to put all these things in one place and give it as a gift to all the young mothers in my life. I could find What To Expect When You're Expecting. I could find Dr. Spock. But I couldn't find the one filled with fun and laughter -- so, together with Alice, the mother of my god daughters, I set out to make it. And here it is: The Little Big Book for Moms which packs everything together in one deliciously illustrated 350 page book. The images come from the early part of this century and the text comes from everywhere. Of course, it has fairy tales (brilliantly retold by Katrina Fried) and nursery rhymes (where would we be without Humpty Dumpty and One,Two, Buckle My Shoe) but also excerpts from Peter Pan and Charlotte's Web, baked apples stuffed with granola and frozen chocolate bananas, poems by Maya Angelou and Lewis Carroll and Ogden Nash and Shel Silversten, recipes for hand puppets and paper dolls and potato stamps, songs you know by heart (Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star) and songs you don't (The Animal Fair). It even has stories about being a mom by Susan Cheever and Anne Lamott -- stories that remind us how dear the little ones really are (sometimes we need reminding). I hope this book will be your little one's favorite book (and yours too)--not just because there are endless things in it -- to do, to read, to sing, and to eat -- but also because there is so much to look at and laugh about. I hope it becomes the one book that you take in the car, on the train, in the plane, the one you cuddle up with, the one that is endless in its riches and the one book that brings smiles to everyone's face, big and little alike.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic for parents and children! Review: Who knew that having a child could be so much fun?! I started reading to my daughter from day 1 out of this book - the poems and songs and faerie tales are magic in themselves, but the pictures grab her 10 month old attention and we laugh together over silly songs and rhymes. If you are stranded on a deserted island with your child and you have to bring one book, let this be the one, you won't be sorry, nor will you ever be bored! Great recipes, as well...
