Rating: Summary: This is most certainly teen writing. . . Review: Those who like this book haven't read good fiction before. I thrive on good fiction, and I didn't thrive on this. I was bored throughout it and didn't feel anything towards the characters or the stories, and if my emotions aren't involved, I might as well be reading something factual. The writers are definitely inexperienced, and the ideas are dull and lifeless, the characters don't have very much depth, the storylines start boring and end that way. As a teen writer and reader, I think the stories were poorly chosen. There is much better teen writing out there. For those who want a good story to read, don't buy this book. It's not worth your time. Instead, buy something written by an experienced, adult writer that knows what they're doing.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT poetry and fiction by teens! Review: When I searched for reviews of Written in the Dirt, I couldn't find any - how unjust. (so here i am)! Written in the Dirt includes all sorts of writings - courageously, some of the more gritty pieces that are likely to leave you thinking and wondering to yourself. I enjoyed Written partially because I was able to go from light, funny poems to provocative short stories with unresolved ends. That variety felt real, because the writings left room for loose ends. and i have a lot of loose ends- who doesn't? i loved the short story "Holes." the author's erratic sentences punctuate the chaos of what she evokes, and the end shocks you and leaves you feeling. "Supernova" is only two pages, but charged with meaning. very fun to read. "Kody" is regionalist, but manages to illuminate the global idea of loss, too. Written in the Dirt found me accidentally, but other kids should look for it themselves. the book is small enough, but it contains an impossible amount of talent, humor, and honesty.
Rating: Summary: Teen Ink Review: Wow! Once again, Teen Ink organization has brought together true talent from all over the country, and binded them all in this inspirational book. As a member of the Teen Ink Advisory Board, I am already exposed to some absolutely amazing writing, but honestly, this book was beyond mind-boggling! Teen Ink: Written in Dirt is a must-read for absolutely everyone; it is a guarantee that there is something in it for everybody!
Rating: Summary: Written in the Dirt Review: Written in the Dirt is an excellent collection of stories written by teens for teens. What I love about this book (along with all of the other Teen Ink books) is that every one of the stories leaves the reader in deep thought and ready to write. There are so many different feelings expressed in this book that anyone can relate to it.
