Summary: The MOST important thing you can do for your child
Review: "If you have a child or know of a child who can't read, won't read, or hates to read, this is the book you're waiting for."

Trelease covers why and how to read aloud, when to begin and what mkes a good read-aloud. He also talks about "reading-aloud's silent partner," sustained silent reading. He devotes and entire chapter to television. Best of all is his "treasury," where he lists books appropriate for all ages from infant to adult, with a short summary of each.

This book is an absolute MUST for every family's library.

Summary: A MUST FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS...AN EXCELLENT BOOK!!!
Review: After meeting Jim Trelease at a Cobb County symposium in Georgia, I pulled out his book that my sister had given to me a few years back. I have been reading aloud to my daughter since birth, however, I just started reading her chapter books at age six, our first was "Charlotte's Web". Another inspiration after meeting Jim, and reading his book, was not to allow my daughter to view too much TV. We started the end of the 1st grade school year, not allowing her to watch TV during the week. Now as a 2nd grader, she easily accepted our policy on viewing TV. Since turning off the TV, we are able to read, interact more with one another, crafts, bake. It's so much more FUN!! We have really been experiencing the joy of reading together. The laughter, questions, closeness that you just can't put into words. I gave her 1st grade teacher a copy of the book March of 1999, and she is incorporating the Read-Aloud Handbook philosophy: The more you, read, the more you know; the more you know, the smarter you grow, etc. Now I will be giving a copy of Jim's book to her 2nd grade teacher. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT BOOK!!! I only wish ALL of the teachers in COBB county could have met Jim Trelease in person last March!!! I ALSO WISH I HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO GIVE A COPY OF THIS BOOK TO THE ENTIRE SCHOOOL!!!

Summary: YOU NEED THIS BOOK!
Review: Anyone who has a child, teaches preschool through high school, or ever plans to have a child or teach, needs this book! It is the single most important item. Get this book and do everything he suggests! My kids and the various students I taught have had a tremendous experience with books and literature. My kids also had spectacular SAT verbal scores which was a nice help with college admission. There is a new edition coming out in August but I have bought every edition so far and plan to continue buying them. They have diferent information in every one. Get them all!

Summary: The Read Aloud Handbook
Review: As an educator with many years of experience in both the classroom and school administration, I highly recommend this book for teachers, principals, and parents. This book gives the true picture of what children need to hear about quality stories written by wonderful authors. Moreover, this book gives a treasury of book titles that will enhance a classroom, a school, a family, and children.

Summary: The Best Book About Reading That Money Can Buy!!!!!
Review: Dear Parents, Grandparents, Teachers and all who find specialjoy in their children. This is the finest book about what readingcould and should be that I have discovered in 39 years as a parent, grandparent and 22 years as an elementary school teacher. I strongly recommend that you obtain a copy of this terrific book and use it in building new bridges to the wonders and joys of reading with your children. The essence of the book can be found in a poem by Strickland Gillilan - "You may have tangible wealth untold; Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be - I had a Mother(and Father)who read to me.

Summary: Learn about the Detrimental Effects of TV
Review: I am not a non-fiction person but this book had me in its grip like a bestselling mystery novel. Trelease really makes one think about reading as a whole and the damage tv does to families and individuals and especially children. What he has to say about Sesame Street is really eye-opening...things you never considered before. You will definitely never look at television the same again! What's more, he gives readers a treasury of recommended reading for kids and adults from picture books to short novels with short synopses.

Summary: THE Reference Book To Raise a Reader
Review: I first discovered the 1985 edition of Jim Trelease's book
and ever since then have snapped up every edition.
"The Read-Aloud Handbook" is my baby-shower gift, always -- I let others bring diapers and toys and clothes for the baby's body --
this book will care for the baby's mind.
"The Read-Aloud Handbook" very neatly and simply lays out the proof that reading aloud to children is the best way to get them to WANT to read -- not merely to
think of books in association with school and dittoes and homework (as all too many children do, whose only recreational storytelling has come from a big glass box in the family room.) In simple, clear language, Trelease spends the first half of the book explaining the value of reading aloud, success stories, and practical tips on both reading aloud and curbing television usage. The second half of the book is a reference list of tested read-alouds, from board books for infants to novels for teens.
This is an invaluable reference book.

Summary: Read-Aloud Handbook, 2001 edition
Review: I have read three of Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbooks. Every one is excellent and has fresh insight and stories to tell. The need to read aloud to children of all ages cannot be oversold. Every time I read a new edition, it remotivates me to keep reading with my children and my students. When people say they don't have time, it's because they are busy watching television or the kids are spending time on video games and computer, or running to and fro to soccer and dance. Kids won't pick up books voluntarily if they see it as a drudge, or are not exposed to books. This new edition is a fresh look at a continuing problem. If you have read the others, you need to read this one as well. Mr. Trelease brings in new relevant trends that have brought about changes in reading to the population as a whole, and trends that discourage reading. His list of read-alouds is also updated to include wonderful new books that are capturing children's hearts.

Summary: This book is the best gift you can give a parent or child.
Review: I received this book as a gift when my son, now 6, was born. It's BY FAR, the BEST GIFT I EVER RECEIVED. I have since bought the latest edition to update myself on the latest read-aloud treasury, and the updated information on how we can inspire reading in our children. I have relied on the treasury in the book to guide me through the morass of children's books available, and my children have come to love many of the books, and authors listed. (When I asked my six-year old what books he wanted to get at the library the other day, he told me "Maybe something by Shel Silverstein".)

Jim Trelease's words have inspired me to share my read-aloud experiences with my friends, and I have bought many of them copies of their own. His common sense approach to how we can garner interest in reading in our schools should be required reading by educators. I agree with another reviewer who said she wishes she had money to buy every teacher in her school this book (I've started with the Principal in my son's school.)

A must have for any parent. If most of these reviews read like the testimonials of people involved in a cult, it's because we really believe in Jim Trelease's ideas, because we've seen the results in our own families. If this book doesn't inspire you to remember your own favorite books, the joy you felt when your parents read to you, and to spend time reading with your children, nothing will.
