Summary: Absolutely fascinating!
Review: This is one of the more interesting books I have ever read.
Its probably not very good as a self-help book but if you want to better understand the workings of your brain and various disorders, its top notch!

I suffer from OCD and I could see in his book, that OCD has caused many of the problems I have had. To fix your brain through medication/therapy is to truly change your life!

Other parts of the book I liked commented on how our thoughts have a very real impact on our lives. This is very consistent with all the self-help books I have read, especially Joseph Murphy.

Finally, his images of the brain after drug abuse and also of people who smoke too much and drink to much coffee are startling.
Unless you want "a hole in your head", pass that joint, coffee, cig, crack, alcohol etc to someone else! Yuck!

Summary: change your brain change your life.
Review: This is the "Best" book, I have ever read on pin-pointing mental-illness and it's cures. My son, has suffered from ADD, for almost all of his 35 years and, here in Wisconsin, has never gotten a diagnosis or the right medication. He has an appointment at Dr. Amen's clinic in July and we are, finally, looking forard to getting the right help. Dr. Amen's book is "the" most helpful book, I have ever found on this subject and many other mental-illnesses. I think, he's a saint for writing this book. Ann, Waukesha, Wi.

Summary: Waste of Time
Review: To obtain help from this book all you need is unlimited amounts of cash for a lot of tests...oh, and a doctor who will prescribe all the tests. Useless. Sorry I bought it and sorrier than I wasted time reading it.

Summary: It'd be better to 'Change Your Brain' by staring at a wall.
Review: Unfortunately, this so-called 'self-help' book is of no help to the reader. Having been treated for anxiety, depression and ADHD in my adult years, you can rest assured that I have flipped the pages of many such books. 'Change Your Brain...' sounds like a great title--a title which provokes thoughts of regaining control in one's life. However, this book fails miserably in addressing feasible programs to see these thoughts to fruition. I must say that after spending nearly 20 dollars on this book, I am more depressed then before I read it.

Summary: Fellow brain-author enjoyed this!
Review: Very creative coverage of the brain. As a fellow "cerebrophile", I enjoyed it; and the information contained is scientifically sound. May I suggest "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" as a companion guide. All the best to Dr. Amen...Ken Giuffre MD, author "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain"

Summary: New insights on ways to optimize your brain and your life.
Review: When your brain works right, you can work right. When your brain doesn't work right, it is very hard for you to be effective in your life.

Here is exciting new information on how your brain works, along with clear, easy steps to optimize its function.

Based on my brain imaging work with over 6,000 patinets, this book graphically shows readers that many behaviors once thought to be purely psychological in nature may actually be brain problems. ADD, anxiety, depression, alcohol and drug abuse, bipolar disorder and violence can be seen in the brain, helping us to more fully understand the troubling feelings and behaviors suffered by many.

The book divides the brain into 5 "working" sections, and tells what each section does and what happens when things go wrong. For example,

PREFRONTAL CORTEX -- executive center, helps with impulse control and attention span -- ADD and impulse control problems are often found here

CINGULATE GYRUS -- helps you shift attention, and move from thought to thought -- OCD, worriers and people who have problems with opposition and argumentativeness have problems here

LIMBIC SYSTEM -- controls mood, bonding and smell -- problems include depression, social isolation and loss of libido

BASAL GANGLIA -- sets the body's idle or anxiety level -- problems include panic, anxiety, fearfulness and conflict avoidance

TEMPORAL LOBES -- memory, mood stability, temper control -- problems include memory problems, erratic moods, and temper problems

Understanding brain function on a deeper level allows scientists to recommend more targeted treatments. Based on our imaging work, the book is filled with brain prescriptions geared to optimize brain function. These are the same prescriptions I give patients in my clinic in Fairfield, California. They are practical and include nutritional strategies, behavioral interventions, appropriate medications, and cognitive exercises.

My belief is that this book shows how psychiatry will be practiced 10 -15 years from now. It also gives practical advice on how to optimize brain function and subsequently optimize your life.

Summary: His book is based on pseudoscience.
Review: While Change Your Brain, Change Your Life is entertaining Dr. Daniel Amen epitomizes modern-day biopsychiatry. Unfortunately, healthcare professionals, parents and teachers have been lead to believe anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, impulsiveness, excessive anger and worry, are confirmatory, neurobiological disorders caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain and can be detected by brain scans. This is pseudoscience at its best. Dr. Amen should not be commended for anything he's accomplished thus far in his medical career.
