Rating: Summary: A Godsend!!! Review: The first few weeks of breast feeding were the hardest of my life! I wanted to sleep! I wanted my nipples not to KILL! (I had a baby who sucked Hard from minutes after birth.) This book kept me going. The scientifically proven benefits run the gammut--no stinky poops, a 10 pts higher IQ, a baby less likely to have allergies, a baby less likely to be sick (baby gets mom's antibodies) and more. After about four wks, I was fine. My baby's 10 wks now and he's never had a bottle. I thought I'd never feed in public, and now I do it everyday. (It's amazing how all your preconceptions disappear!) Great tips on what to do about discomfort. My fav. was let nipples air dry and they harden. As soon as I got this book I read and read and read. Thank you William and Martha. I can't believe they have EIGHT kids.
Rating: Summary: Do not read this book if you have any trouble breastfeeding! Review: This book does have some good information in it like the charts of what things you can and cant take while breastfeeding and how to keep your nutrition up. But these two are so opinionated that you end up feeling like a failure if you have any trouble breastfeeding. I was reading this book because I was having trouble producing milk. I had an emergency c-section and mastitis. My doctor starting supplementing my son on formula because he was not gaining enough weight. Between not producing milk and reading this book I felt like the worst mother doing a disservice to my son when we finally gave up on breastfeeding. I felt like it was my fault and I was just not doing things right and not the truth that my body was not able to do it. In the end if you are a successful with breastfeeding this book makes a good reference but RUN far away from this book if you are having any problems breastfeeding.
Rating: Summary: Not completely won over Review: This book has great tips for breastfeeding. However, I am not so sure I like the Sears' attitude. I am not a fan of co-sleeping and think they hit it a little hard. I agree with some other reviewers that they are too negative regarding bottle-feeding. I have been lucky with breastfeeding my baby girl, but have many friends that have had problems and the rigid outlook of the Sears is not very helpful. Take their advice with a grain of salt - you are the mother, do what you think is best.
Rating: Summary: Good insightful and funny advice! Review: This book helped me gain the confidence needed to seriously breastfeed my first child. I always knew breast was best, but of course had my doubts on whether or not I could do it for 6-12 months, or even if I could produce enough milk. In the end, I nursed my first child until he was 23 months old, at which point I had to wean him because I was 3 months pregnant and for the first time, latching on really HURT! I'm now 8 months pregnant and looking forward to nursing my 2nd child. The lip-flip tip in this book really helped me get the latch on correct, and the information on combining nursing with pumping to help increase my milk supply was great! When I went back to work, I was able to pump 15-26 ounces per day (in 3 pumpings). All the other breastfeeding books I read were all written by women. Dr. William Sears adds his input from a man's perspective, which is funny (check out his reaction while driving and Martha began breastfeeding in the back seat of their car), and insightful. My husband even enjoyed reading this book!
Rating: Summary: Great book for those set on breastfeeding Review: This book is full of helpful information and how-to's. If you're set on breastfeeding exclusively, go ahead and buy it. If you are thinking of supplementing, pick another book because this one will make you feel bad about it. I agree with the majority of the information, although sometimes it's presented in a really preachy manner. Oh- and skip the intro - it really made me wonder about these people when I read that she had breastfed one of her children for FOUR YEARS! Look past the preachy attitude and you will find this book very helpful.
Rating: Summary: A must-have! Review: This book is nothing short of AMAZING! I had been breastfeeding my son for over fourteen months when I decided to purchase this book. (To have solid medical facts to back up my extended breastfeeding to those who were pressuring me to wean) I learned so much! I couldn't believe it. I knew I was doing great things for my son by breastfeeding him, but I never knew just how many benefits I was giving him. I am kicking myself for not buying this book before he was born. It would've really eased my mind in the early days. This book is great for nursing moms and moms-to-be. The wealth of information in The Breastfeeding Book is truly astounding.
Rating: Summary: I want to burn this book! Review: This book is so unrealistic. When weaning is mentioned, they suggest you are weaning a toddler or preschooler. Cloth diapers seem to be the norm as is NOT working. This book is not for someone who wants to leave the house in the first year or go back to work. I wish I had never purchased this book and I plan to throw it out!!!
Rating: Summary: The Breastfeeding Book: Everything You Need to Know... Review: This book is very thorough and explains many ins and outs of breastfeeding and how to make it work for even the mothers who want to or have to get out of the house or work. Yes, they suggest staying home because that is important for baby but tell you if you have to that you can still provide your milk and be attached when you are home. It covers premies and how important your milk is to your baby and to be prepared to stick to your guns when the doctors are telling you baby HAS to feed by bottle because breastfeeding is too tiring. Actually, the bottle feeding is more tiring for a premie, there are several research articles proving this. And they let you know that it is ok to get a breastfeeding helper to help you to succeed. Pumping and providing your milk is the one way that you can help your baby and be involved when you often feel so helpless. The discussions on latch, positioning, problems and answering your babys needs, are very understandable and help you to not feel guilty for following your own instincts instead of some strict scheduling type of book. The book even explains how, if you are sick or need a medication, you still won't need to stop breastfeeding, except in rare instances. Most medications are compatible with breastfeeding so don't worry about the small amount that might get into your milk, but always check with your healthcare professional who should check Dr. Thomas Hale's Medications and Mothers Milk. (More reliable than the PDR.) I think this book is a lifesaver for someone just learning. Your life doesn't stop with breastfeeding it is a very special, more connected time with your child, not to mention the most normal food and nutrition to protect your childs health and development.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Martha and Dr Sears for this book! Review: This book not only gives you the "how-to's", but more importantly gives you the "why's". In this day and age of formula feeding, too many people think that formula is equal to breastmilk. This book really helped cement and even defend my choice to breastfeed. The authors explain in great detail the benefits of breastmilk in a way I have not seen elsewhere. This book is one gift that I will give all of my friends and family before they have their babies.
Rating: Summary: Saved my breastfeeding in the nick of time! Review: This book saved us. I was trying to feed on a schedule and it was NOT working. My baby was crying all the time and was hungry! Plus, I did not understand there was a difference between nursing and breastfeeding. This book opened my mind to the entire idea of breastfeeding and now it is by far the most enjoyable time I have with my baby. I would never have thought that before she was born. Get this book if you are going to breastfeed - it's MUCH HARDER THAN YOU THINK!! And, will much more satisfactory for YOU than you think! I just thought I would breastfeed for the baby because that's what people do now. But, I get so much happieness from it... This book was partly responisble for that. Thanks Dr. Sears - thank God you are writing books!
