Rating: Summary: By Breastfeeding Bible! Review: From my perspective, breastfeeding success depends a lot on how much support the mom has, including educational support like this book. I am a big "Sears" fan to start with, but this book is already dog-eared just 4.5 months into my first child. I had an AWFUL start nursing her and needed to seek help from a lactation consultant as well. This book sat at my nursing station and I read and re-read sections to help me get things working. Now I am a happy nursing mother with a thriving nursed baby. I still refer to it when I have questions. A very worthwhile purchase for any pregnant woman or excellent shower gift!

Rating: Summary: Not helpful if you're having trouble breastfeeding...... Review: I agree with the reviewer who said that this book made her feel like a complete failure. After the birth of my son, I nursed frequently, the baby had a beautiful "latch", everything went well...until my milk absolutely failed to come in. Nothing I did made any difference in the very low supply...lactation consultations, pumping, herbs, etc. I turned to this book for ideas about the possible cause and corrective measures for the problem and came up empty. The best advice the book had was "nurse frequently and avoid supplements". Great. My baby was dehydrated and losing weight by day five of life....and got formula supplements so that he didn't starve. Of course breastmilk is best...but it's not always possible, even for moms who want to breastfeed. Look up anything about formula in this book and you'll trip over preachy material about how every mother can breastfeed and how formula is an evil chemical concoction. The judgemental tone of this book is hard to deal with for those of us who CAN'T breastfeed...but if you can deal with the Sears' serious prejudices, then you might get something out of reading it. ...
Rating: Summary: Informative and helpful... Review: I am expecting my first baby very soon. I purchased this book hoping it would prepare me for this beautiful and wonderful process! I have yet to embark on the wonders of breastfeeding but, I feel this book gave me the knowledge and support on what to expect. It was a little difficult to read (somewhat technical at times). The information seems "scattered" throughout the book. Stick with it! The information is not laid out for easy reference. All in all a good resource.
Rating: Summary: Good information, BUT...... Review: I bought this book because it was recommended by my breastfeeding class instructor. Being a first-time mom, I have found the information in it very helpful but on those days that breastfeeding has been difficult, it didn't provide any motivational or inspirational information to encourage me to continue. The small section dedicated to those difficult days provided tips in which I already tried before going to the book. I would only recommend this book if you are looking for basic breastfeeding info such as positions, nutrition, and troubleshooting feeding problems.
Rating: Summary: Not useful for preemie babies Review: I bought this book to prepare for my child's birth. Unfortunatly, the baby came a lot sooner than I had planned. I found the section on feeding preemie babies to be narrow, militant in tone and not at all practical. Because so many of the chapters are repetitious on the topic of the dangers of giving your baby a bottle (and makes it sound akin to giving the baby crack) - it leaves no room for the fact that sometimes it is not up to the parents. I hated this book more and more as time went on and threw my copy away the day the baby came home from the hospital.
Rating: Summary: Some good information if you don't mind being a failure Review: I bought this book when I was having problems breastfeeding after getting mastitis. My production almost stopped. This wasn't a good book to buy when I was already that close to stopping breastfeeding. As my supply continued to diminish, I felt like more and more of a failure. If you stay home and are able to feed your baby and not worry about needing to pump, the book is fine. If you work and are having any problems, this book will make you feel awful. After all, adoptive mothers can build a milk supply - if you just had a baby, what's wrong with you that you can't - FAILURE! The Sears family needs to realize that some people just can't breastfeed and need to be a little kinder to those who can't. I can understand wanting people to breastfeed, but they need to realize that people who buy the book don't need to be convinced to breastfeed; they probably already are but are having problems.
Rating: Summary: get the baby book instead Review: I bought this when I bout the Dr Sears baby book, and was really disappointed that everything in this book was in the Baby book as well. I love the Baby book, but the Breastfeeding book doesn't go any further in depth. This was a waste for me :(
Rating: Summary: Did not buy this book Review: I did not buy this book after looking at it in Babies "r" us and reading the reviews posted here. When I saw this book in person it seemed intimidating, technical and text-book like. Definitely not an easy read!
Rating: Summary: Great preparation book for a mommy-to-be Review: I found that this book was the most resourceful of the breastfeeding books I have looked at or read. It's easy to read and understand and set up so that you can refer back to sections that you may find most useful. Put me at ease over nursing and not being afraid to get help.
