Rating: Summary: Paying Attention Review: "Pay Attention!" Children hear this phrase a lot at home and at school. What exactly does it mean to "pay attention," and how can you help your child do it more naturally and without prompting.Focus, or "paying attention", can be easily defined as three things: eye contact, body focus, and mental concentration. If your child is paying attention to you when you are talking to him or her, then your child will be looking at your eyes, standing or sitting still, and thinking about what you are saying. Without these three elements, the natural chain of communication is broken. Training your child to be more naturally focused takes patience and consistency and will bring more peace and harmony into both your lives. Start with the eyes. When you need your child to follow your directions, tell them to look at you before you start to talk to them. "Kevin, look at me, I want you to..." If your child looks away while you are in the middle of speaking, then calmly stop and remind them to look you in the eyes. The key to success with this technique is patience; you should practice this method with your child at home when you have the time to stop and remind them to look at your eyes. If you lose your temper, this technique loses its power - yelling "LOOK AT ME" frightens the child and will attach a painful experience to making eye contact. After your child is looking, then move on to the body. Telling your child to take a deep breath after you have them looking at your eyes will calm them and slow down their body. Fidgeting or nervous energy makes it very difficult for the child to maintain eye contact for long. Breathe slowly and deeply loud, enough for your child to hear you. This modeling helps them to know what they need to do, and it will have a calming effect on you as well. Once the body is quiet and still, you can begin to talk to your child, and they will begin to concentrate on what you are saying. To help increase your child's mental concentration and attention span, ask them to repeat the important parts of what you are telling them. "What do I want you to do when you go to your room?" If they do not answer correctly, then try breaking down your order into smaller parts and patiently tell them again. "When you go to your room, first, put away your toys. What do you have to do first when you go to your room?" Again, patience and consistency are the keys to your success. A child who cannot pay attention in school will learn more slowly and will fall behind his peers. A relationship between a parent and child is harmed by the frustration created when a child does not listen to his parents. If you take time to help your child to be more naturally focused, he will be a better learner, and you will have a richer relationship.
Rating: Summary: SImple and It Works! Review: "The Child Whisperer" is a easy to read book that helps parents to understand what makes their children do the things they do sometimes.
This book also is good for learning a new way to talk to your child and to other adults too.
Rating: Summary: No hype here Review: A basic book on parenting skills. I did not like this book at first. I felt like it should have been longer. After reading it twice(you can read it in one night), I started to use the "eye contact" method with my son. It worked! This basic book becomes effective when put into use.
Rating: Summary: A New Perspective Review: A new perspective bridging the gap between east and west, January 30, 2002 Reviewer: An educator, mother of four responsible and compassionate global citizens. The author focuses on the importance of emotional well-being as the foundation for effective learning. Self-awareness and the development of discipline and self-control are the building blocks for character formation in children. A positive attitude lays the foundation for effectiveness and motivation in the communicative process between well-meaning, committed adults and receptive children
Rating: Summary: I Fell for It Review: After reading half way through this book I was perplexed. How is it that this book got 19 five-star reviews? Is there something wrong with me that I'm just not "getting it"? The reviewer from Sacramento summed it up correctly: vague platitudes with no content. I did not return the book, but dropped it off at the library's freebie bin hoping someone might get something useful out of it. Although I was a bit irritated, I had no intention of writing a review; the author did seem sincere, and I don't like bad-mouthing people. However, something happened that angered me: I was reading the reviews of Dr. William Sears' The Discipline Book when I discovered a review whose primary purpose was to promote The Child Whisperer! The vast majority of five-star reviews here must be bogus. To date, there are no four-star or three-star reviews, but some two-star and one-star reviews. Isn't that odd? Notice that there are no editorial reviews for this book. Notice that this book is self-published; Asian Arts Center IS Matt Pasquinilli, and The Child Whisperer is the only book published by Asian Arts Center. No reputable publishing house would touch this drivel. Please don't let the promoters of this book dupe you into buying it; you'll be paying ten bucks for 54 pages of vacuous nonsense. (108 pages of double-spaced text is 54 pages.) Again, Mr. Pasquinilli seems sincere, so I am indeed mystified.
Rating: Summary: great!!! Review: as a father of 5 children, two of them involved in martial arts, I think this book is excellent, combining knowledge of children and the spirituality of martial arts for our self improvement as parents of our next generation.
Rating: Summary: Great Tools for Communicating with Children Today Review: As the mother of two daughters, I'm constantly seeking information on raising children in today's world. The Child Whisperer offers more insightful knowledge than everything I've read before combined. It reveals philosophies, techniques and methods that benefit both parents and children. Addressing such topics as respect, confidence, communication and leadership instantly stuck me as information that would not only help my developing girls but offer them tools for a lifetime of success. The gentle manner of the author takes you through many moral and ethical issues that are addressed in the simplest form. This book is easy to read and understand and most importantly to apply in every day life. The Child Whisperer not only defines behaviors, it gives healthy, positive ways to apply and teach the behaviors, real life stories to support the methods and techniques and communication skills to inspire success. I hope this is the first of many books by Matt Pasquinilli. The Child Whisperer is a "must have" for parents, grandparents, educators and everyone who help shape the future of our children.

Rating: Summary: It's All About Quality Not Quantity Review: Do we really need another 300-page book giving us advice on raising and communicating with our children? I applaud Mr. Pasquinilli for making it simple and succinct! In one hour I was able to gain some much needed methods for getting my active 5-year old to focus and maintain eye contact with me. And it works! Can Mr. Pasquinilli write a book about how to get your kids to eat vegetables!
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time ... Review: Don't believe the glowing reviews of this "pamphlet".This book was a complete waste of time . The author does not give any concrete ideas or suggestions to help parents implement his ideas. This approach may well work within the confines of martial arts instructions and lessons but on it's own it doesn't stand up. I... I read it in under an hour,(quite possible since it is a pamphlet double spaced in order to fool the reader into thinking it is a book). I...it may well be an excellent pamphlet for his students and their families. Also the authuor needs a good editor!!! . ...
