Summary: If you can only buy 1 book on Type 2 Diabetes - THIS IS IT!
Review: As a long standing DMer (Type 2 going on weird) who has done lots of research and reading on this disease in both clinical and popular health books and the web, I am very impressed with this book. I got a copy on my recent visit to the USA from the UK.

Gretchen Becker's Book has brought together so much solid information and has achieved the near impossible, of presenting it in a very readable style.

The book is well laid out so that if still reeling from the shock of the diagnosis, (and who doesn't react like that?), the basics are there right from the start. At your own pace you can add in and read more depth and scientific facts to help you live and manage the disease. This is important as we, the people with diabetes, are the ones who live with it rather than the doctors, nurses and dietitians who help us. We need to be as informed as possible to manage a disease which can have devastating complications if uncontrolled.

Thankfully, Gretchen also leavens this mixture with her dry sense of humour - vital to coping with any chronic disease. She shows us that there is life after diagnosis and it can be fun. As a scientist, sheep farmer and science editor Gretchen knows the disease from the inside as she has type 2.

A major plus for this book is that it also addresses the psychological consequences of living with a chronic disease. Rick Mendosa's chapter on Web resources to research DM (Diabetes Mellitus)is an excellent introduction to some of the best reliable sites online.

I would strongly recommend this to any person with DM whether Type 1 or 2, Diabetologist,CDE, family practitioner, nurse or family member... After 23 years of living with disease, I learned much by reading this book. Thank you, Gretchen.

I will certainly be recommending it to my local Diabetes Clinic and GP practice back in the UK and will be giving it as Christmas presents to a couple of friends.

Go buy it and get a better handle on your DM!

Review: Being newly diagnosed with Type 2 this REALLY helped me understand...even my diabetic educator was impressed that I was informed. In a way it is comforting to read even though you may still be in disbelief of your diagnosis, do your self a favor and get it ....it is well worth it.

Review: Having just learned that I have type 2 diabetes, I couldn't ask for a better book to refer to than THE FIRST YEAR. The book is written from the first days, weeks, and months and the order is perfect for what (at least) I have been going through. Becker understands that the reader doesn't really want to get too deep in details about the illness but tells enough that anyone can get a better picture as to what is going on with their body.

The book is broken down by living and learning. One section that I found very informative is about the meters. I had no idea that they are affected by elevation. I travel to a mountainous area every year and needed to know this.

I can't say enough about this book. Anyone who is newly diagnosed with this disease should get this book and get information your doctor or educator may not tell you.

Review: I bought this book the day I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic, along with two other texts. This one was far more comprehensive and better indexed. Even now that my diagnosis has changed to Type 1 (LADA), I still turn to it daily as a reference. It has detailed information about the various tests that are being done in the early stages that was invaluable to me when my pcp said I was too old to be type 1, but I didn't have any of the known risk factors for type 2.

I'd strongly recommend this book for any adult newly diagnosed with diabetes. I haven't found anything comprable for Type 1, as yet.

Review: I can't say enough how wonderful this book is! I wish I had known about it the first day I was diagnosed. I found a copy at my library when I was one month in from being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I began to devour the book. It's written in such a way that you don't get overwhelmed. It gives you things to laugh about, and shares the medical information in small chunks that you can skip if you're not in that place at that time. Gretchen is on the big diabetes email list that I recently joined (). She is a fabulous person as well as a fabulous writer. Rick Mendosa, the another ()celebrity, is on the email list as well. Visit .mendosa.com for his website. This book is really a wonderful overview for Type 2 diagnosis. Share it with your friends and family. Donate a copy to your public library. Spread the word.

Review: I cannot praise this book highly enough. Thank the Good Lord that I found it right after my doctor informed me that I was a type 2 diabetic. When he informed me I kind of went into a state of shock and really didn't hear very much of what he was telling me. All I knew was that my life, as I had known it, was over and that I didn't have very much to look forward to. He, my doctor, had me enroll in a class for diabetics, prescribed some medications, gave me a prescription for a test meter and strips, and told me to come back in two weeks to see how my glucose levels were doing. He did't tell me why he giving me the prescriptions or how they acted on my glucose levels. He didn't tell me how to test or when. I guess he was leaving that up to the class and the pharmacy when I got my meter. By reading this book I now know what he is doing and why. I am also able to take a more active part in my treatment and tailor my medications to achieve a better control. I'm no longer looking at diabetes as a death sentence but as just something to be aware of and to control in order to continue living a full life. Applying what I have learned from this book and working with my doctor, I have achieved good control and my last 2 A1c blood tests were 5.3 and 5.8, well within the normal range even with someone not being diabetic. Outstanding book!!!!
