Rating: Summary: ZZZZZZZZ...Finally!! Review: I just have to say that I read the book and started the schedule the same day on my 6 month old who had not yet slept through the night. The first night was a little rough, but the rest has been a piece of cake! We are officially sleeping through the night for one month now. The book was easy to read and offered some sound advice. I would recommend this book to everyone and I already have. Thank You, Dr. Mindell.
Rating: Summary: I felt that this book was extremely useful. Review: Parents of young children and infants should read this book. It offers advice about getting children to sleep and developing bedtime routines, and it also offers a primer about child rearing in general.
Rating: Summary: A compassionate approach that won't break the parents! Review: This is the first book I've found that appreciates how difficult sleep training is on the parents, and offers alternatives to rigid, lengthy crying sessions in the middle of the night. The result -- my 4 1/2 month old is now sleeping through the night (as are his grateful parents!). First we worked on the naps (no more naps in the bouncy seat, and into the crib at the first yawn or eye rub), then the bedtime routine (same time, same place), and finally let the little guy cry it out in the middle of the night -- to the tune of 1 1/2 turns of the mobile and a couple trips in to pat his belly and tell him it was alright. It wasn't torture for us or the baby. Dr. Mindell gives you permission to recognize your own limits and set your own guidelines for what's enough for one night. Her book is practical, realistic, and compassionate. With that kind of advice, you actually believe you can succeed. What's more, she makes you realize how much happier your child will be if ! he can just soothe himself to sleep.
Rating: Summary: I love this book!! Review: I can't even begin to say enough good things about this book! We had tried everything with our 12 month old, and had about given up!! Our pediatrician recommended this book, and after reading it, we were able to work on some different ideas, and got our baby to sleep through the night! That was 7 months ago, and she's STILL sleeping all night!
Rating: Summary: We sleep through the night now! Review: This book is a practical guide for addressing sleep issues. I used Dr. Mindell's suggestions for both my 17 month old and 6 1/2 year old and they both are sleeping through the night as a result. The text was easy to read. I discovered patterns that we had established that were reinforcing behavior that we didn't want. We were able to adjust our night-time rituals in a gentle, soothing and non-confrontational way!!! Dr. Mindell's style of dealing with children is extemely child AND adult sensitive. She is clearly an advocate for both children and adults. We all sleep well now and feel good about how we were able to get to that point. I strongly recommend this book to parents of newborns as well as young children. It's a must have!.
Rating: Summary: A MUST For Parents Review: This book is a MUST for parents. Dr. Mindell's advice is excellent, to the point, and parent-friendly. I saw Dr. Mindell on the Today Show and she was warm, wonderful, and knowledgable. I now give this book as a shower present to all my friends. My 9-month-old now sleeps through the night and life is bliss.
Rating: Summary: Disorganized information; us against baby attitude. Review: This book was not helpful at all. I learned nothing that I haven't already read in every parenting magazine's generalized article on the subject. I expected a book to be more specific. Instead the author tends to deliver her advice in such a disorganized way that half way through each chapter I found myself checking back to the beginning to make sure I hadn't accidently skipped to another chapter. Finding information that applied to my five month old was hit and miss. Plus the more I read the more uncomfortable I felt taking any of her advice since every chapter seems to have an "parent against baby" attitude. Often refering to a child's way of dealing with the world around her as "pulling stunts." I don't care to relate to my precious baby as if she were a juvinile delinquent.
Rating: Summary: This book works! Review: I was surprised to see the negative review of this book by a reader on 1/31 who states that Sleeping Through the Night is like a conversation with a friend. If had a friend who was the director of a sleep disorders center and an expert on child's sleep, that's exactly who I'd go to for information. And from my point of view, the conversation-like feel of this book is one of it's strong points. The information is presented in a simple, easy to understand manner. For myself, my wife, my friends, and even people I've spoken with in the waiting room of my pediatrician's office, this book works!. It's style is friendly and accessible, and it answers the questions parents have in the middle of the night... when they need help the most.
Rating: Summary: Amateurish, typical Review: This books seemed to me to be written very amateurishly. It read like a conversation with a friend, unfortunately its content seemed only about that reliable. While the author starts out talking about sleep functions, etc., she then moves on to give gobs of tangentally-related parenting advice...my point being that this "info" was merely opinion, and an unprofessional-sounding one at that. She didn't back up what she said in a substantial way, and I found that in fact, she didn't offer any real solutions to people in dire need of a sleeping child. At best this book offers guidelines that would be good to keep in mind before a baby is born, and a bit of info on infant sleep patterns.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING!! Review: Sleeping Through the Night saved us!! This excellent book was full of practical advice. After reading all the other books available, this was the only one that helped us solve our problem. Our 9-month-old is now sleeping through the night and we love it!
