Rating: Summary: Food for thought..... This is a feast... Review: This book had some great ideas for parents and everyone else who deals with children on a regular basis! As an ER nurse, I'm always trying to understand more about the human condition. This book talks candidly about developmental problems facing our "normal" children, due to their environment and America's fast paced culture. Take time to read this book. It will change the way that you think about touch; and will change the children's lives that you 'touch.'
Rating: Summary: Great Introduction to Sensory Integration! Review: This book is a great introduction to sensory integration and how our senses effect our learning. As A professional who works with individuals who have sensory difficulties, I feel that this book would be helpful for new teacher trainings, as an introduction to sensory integration, or as a guide to help individuals (such as parents) who do not work in an education or medically based industry that need to gain a better understanding of sensory integration. All teachers should use these basic techniques in their classrooms; for individuals who are interested in a deeper understanding of sensory integration dysfunction and other related difficulties, perhaps a book with a deeper explanation of the CNS and sensory systems would better suit their needs. Overall, it's a good quick read!
Rating: Summary: A Must read For Every Parent, teacher and caregiver Review: This book is a must read for every parent, teacher and caregiver. "Sensory Secrets" addresses the importance of sensory development and why so many of our children are having problems learning today. Ms Schneider, in an easy to read format, shares the belief that children need movement and stimulation of their sensory systems in order to facilitate learning. Her FOUNDATION SKILLS INVENTORY is a fantastic and easy to use tool to help one see what might be missing in a child's development. She also provides practical and immediate suggestions to address sensory problems. It is a wonderful guide and would make a wonderful gift for a newborn's parents. I read it three times and each time I learned more.
Rating: Summary: Thumbs UP for Sensory Secrets Review: This book was fantastic! It was well written, easy to understand, and accurate. Catherine generated wonderful ideas for parent/child activities that can be immediately implemented to help change children's lives.I will use the Foundational Skills Inventory in my practice and share it with other therapists. It is easy for parents, educators and other health professionals to use to highlight areas of concern, and to clearly communicate with the occupational therapist. I plan to order it in tablet form as soon as it becomes available. A must read for OT students! I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Sensory Secrets is a Dud Review: This book was not at all helpful if you have a baseline knowledge of Disorder of Sensory Integration (DSI), and are trying to learn more about it. I was very disappointed with this book, it added nothing to my knowledge base of DSI. If you have read the out-of-sync child, this book will add nothing to your knowledge base. If you have not read Out-of-sync, than this book *might* be a good starting point. If you have a special needs child, skip this book and go directly to the Out-of-sync child book.
