Rating: Summary: Fascinating! A must for parents of LD or ADD visual learners Review: Every parent who has a child branded ADD or LD or a child who learns visually rather than auditorily should read this book and give copies to all their child's teachers! This is without a doubt the most enlightening and useful book I have found in 8 years of looking for answers for why my smart, artistic child had so many problems in school. If words present problems for your child, this book is for you. Understanding what your right-brained child is suffering in a left-brained institution (school) will help you and your child overcome the frustrations of learning to read, to write, to do math. Practical, easy tutoring and study strategies use your child's strengths to compensate for weaknesses. This should be required reading for all the teachers and school administrators who undervalue, and fail to understand these wonderful minds!!!
Rating: Summary: IT'S REWARDING THAT THE BOOK IS HELPING YOU Review: Thank you, readers, for your kind feedback on Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World! I co-authored this book with Jeffrey Freed, who tutored my son. I thought you might enjoy an update on Zach: he's now 10 years old and in the 4th grade in a public school in Scottsdale, AZ. He's in two honors classes, gets awards for citizenship, and is studying trumpet and violin. He is an excellent chess player. He recently took an SAT test, in which he finished at high school level in many subjects. He is the light of my life.In spite of the miles between us, Jeffrey Freed and I stay in touch and share our successes. I'd be happy to hear more of your stories about your children at Parsonsrad@aol.com. Jeff and I have discussed the possibility of a second book, but right now child-rearing is taking priority. Thanks again for all your feedback! It's parents and educators like you who are making a difference. Sincerely, Laurie Parsons August 1999
Rating: Summary: Frustrated with you child's school system? Read this Book! Review: I have two boys--both are wonderful, yet both had difficulty with school. This book reveals that today's teaching methods may be(and are) 50 years out of date. It gives concrete ideas and methods that really will help your child feel successful. Schools often make your child feel like a failure. My eldest son had a hard time with spelling--after trying one of the examples with my son--he looked over the spelling list, turned it over in less than 30 seconds, and was then able to spell all words both foward and backwards--plus he knew all the definitions! He commented to me "Mom, am I a genius?" This was the breakthrough I needed to take this information to the schools. It gave me the tools to share with the school and show them what my son needed to be successful. I believe in this book so much I buy all of my children's teachers an edition at Christmas! Some teachers "get it" some don't get the content but, it does stir up some conversation. I believe it is also worth sharing this book with school principal and superintendent as well. AND JEFFERY--if you are out there--let's develop a school using your methods as a model! You are AWESOME! Thank you!
Rating: Summary: new kids need new teaching Review: I was heartened after reading this book. I know my daughter is smart and she draws beautifully and makes amazing connections of information, but she is terribly distractible, turns upside down and has crying fits or rages if she cannot perform perfectly. She recently came home stating that she hated school. I was heartbroken, she is in kindergarten, you shouldn't hate school in kindergarten. This book helped me help her better and I hope to lend it to teachers and others. I have seen many kids that this fits.
Rating: Summary: Seriously flawed Review: While I suspect the basic premise of the book, that most ADD children merely have a different learning style, is correct, I felt the authors ideas on teaching were seriously flawed. Teaching reading by having a child memorize whole words by sight, and then add "a dose of phonics"later on,(that the author already states these children can't learn anyway) is seriously wrong. There are just too many words in the dictionary for anyone to memorize and retain, and this method might actually hurt the dyslexic who is likely to read "was" as "saw" and "on" as "no",without left-to-right training. I felt his techniques in other areas were equally flawed. I"d like to see the author do some serious scientific studies on his method for about 10 years, complete with control groups, and then come back and write a book.
Rating: Summary: Great book & highly recommended! Review: I highly recommend this book: an excellent perspective on our unique children!
Rating: Summary: A must-read for puzzled parents Review: This book is a truly useful and approachable read. As a parent trying to juggle work, parenting and a child with an unconventional learning style, this was the most illuminating and practical read to date! There are only two elements that need more attention: 1)There needs to be a little section within the first chapter which sumarizes the history of left-brain/right brain theories - as currently presented the authors assume that the readers are familiar with this debate. This addition would make it easier to to grasp the whole approach. Given the amount of theory swirling around the ADD topic, one needs more information on this subject to help make an assessment. (2) The programme for Spelling, Math, Speed Reading and so on is excellent but cries out to be presented in a more user-friendly, task-oriented format. As a trainer who has helped design sessions on management topics, which have to be alert to adult learning needs (and in this case you need to educate the parents as they try and help their children), I found myself itching to transform the exercises into a more structured format. However, I am a little hesitant since I am not a trained middle-school teacher. A workbook would be a great companion piece. And would give a parent more material with which to practice the techniques of visual learning etc. It will definitely be a god-send for those parents who are unable to relocate to Colorado, stay in line for two years and pound on his door to ask him to tutor their kids! Hope this feedback gets back to Mr Freed. I am sure its not the first request for a follow-up book!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Everything made so much sense in relation to what we were noticing in our son. Starting in Preschool the teachers were hinting that he may have ADD. Now in Kindergarten we're hearing the same thing. At my first meeting with his teacher and the school's social worker I brought this book. The teacher loved it and the Social worker turned her nose up at it. I know in my heart my son doesn't have ADD he is just an intelligent visual learner. I wish Mr. Freed would write more and give parents more of this ammunition they need to help their kids. He's correct, there are more of these kids entering schools every year and the system needs to change. Is there any way to contact the author or Child advocate groups in the Boston area who support Jeffrey Freed's findings.
