Summary: interesting but simplistic
Review: The reviews attached to this book indicate that many people have found it inspiring and helpful. I found some of the suggestions intriguing, but overall the arguments were simplistic and not backed up by scientific evidence. I am a special educator and have worked with many children diagnosed with ADHD that, despite having a "right brained" style, also have nonverbal learning disabilities or simply have difficulty integrating skills into a coherent system. If they cannot focus long enough to process visual information, then providing training in visualization or visual-based techniques is not sufficient -- they need to process the information first! Also, many do respond to phonics based reading approaches, provided that they are taught to use multisensory strategies.

I also feel that the book's description of schools and teachers is out of touch. Perhaps I have been fortunate in my personal experience to work with highly caring people who do not fit the authors' description of nitpicky "left brained" teachers who only care about spelling words and neat handwriting. It seems as though the author is providing suggestions for short term instruction, but does not have a clear idea as to how to build a foundation for advanced skills that require sequential or logical thinking.

I can think of many other books that have addressed this topic more thoroughly and with a better foundation. I recommend Mel Levine's "Educational Care", which is comprehensive and provides more detailed and realistic strategies.

Summary: Life Changing
Review: Simply put, this is a must read for any parent of a child with ADD. It will change the way you view your child and definitely open new doors. I recently read a novel titled GIFTED about a child with ADD -it was an amazing book and I emailed the author Kirk Martin at kirkmartinbooks.com to ask for additional resources. He suggested I read Jeffrey Freed's book and I am so grateful. Read this book and read Gifted - they are lifechanging books!

Summary: It's the best - give me more
Review: This book was fabulous! If all parents and educators understood some of the basic principles it would make a huge difference in the lives of so many children.
One result - my daughter now gets 100 on every spelling test, she was failing before.
I just wish he would write more books, I've got suggestions for topics.

Summary: In college and STILL use this book
Review: Excellent book, I was diagnosed with ADD when I was in Jr. High (I have no idea why they didn't catch it earlier), now I am in College and discovered that contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT simply "grow out" of ADD. Even though this book is written for parents of ADD kids, I bought the book in high school to help myself, and still use many of the tips and techniques to help me get through college classes. It also comes in handy to help my professors understand why I am the way I am. In fact, one of the professors I showed it to ended up buying a copy for themself to help with a grandchild who has ADHD. I highly recommend this book to people with ADD/ADHD and parents & teachers of ADD/ADHD children. I wish my parents & teacher had this book when I was growing up.

Summary: Are left brain teachers prejudiced?
Review: As a therapist helping children with learning problems I can really recommend this book. The main idea is that students who use their right brain to learn need to be taught differently than those with left brains. I especially like the checklist for determining if you are right brained or left. I use this checklist with my clients and we have alot of fun with it. An outcome of this theory of different learning styles led me to publish a book of learning techniques all in a visual graphic format for visual right brained learners. The book is BEING IN CONTROL- Natural Techniques for Increasing Your Potential and Creativity for Success in School

Summary: Gifted children and ADD must read
Review: Just one word to sum up this book and that would be AWESOME. It give attention and focus on common sense ideas. Something teacher lack due to their enormous overloaded responsibilities. This book is not a magic cure by far but it opens up other possible routes to assisting your child.

Summary: Cannot say enough good things about this book!
Review: My son seemed to have no problems until he hit first grade. All of a sudden he has ADD, LD and who knows what. In my search for answers I surfed the web and read or skimmed a half dozen books, none of which really helped. Then I read this one and it was like a light bulb going off! The approaches in this book have helped me to understand my son, and why both the school's methodologies and my left-brained 'help' have been a disaster to him. The methods are not difficult to implement and the book is full of great suggestions. A must for any parent with kids struggling in school.

Summary: best I've read so far
Review: I absolutly loved this book. It's crammed pack with information on how to work with your right brained child. The chapters break down by topic ie. math, spelling etc. Then the author goes into detail about how to best capture your childs attention, reinforce him, and teach him in his style, games to play, how not to engage or reinforce your child. He was very specific with easy to understand directions and it was like having him right there step by step telling you how to reach your child. Loved all the examples that were included in every section and that author makes learning as fun and exciting as possible. Best book and only book I've found so far that gives specifics on how and why your child learns the way they do and how to reach them. Can't recommend high enough.

Summary: Breakthrough the everlasting search for answers
Review: For quite a while I've been searching for answers to how I am geared internally.

A couple of months ago my daughter was labeled "attention difficult" by the school board and highly recommended a medical evaluation due to her lack of attention. My daughter gives me no problem at home - she's very social, very talkative, very optimistic, always energetic about things (and that's not the type of energy of running around), she's highly creative with her stories, she loves helping out - all I receive from others are praises and how lucky I am.

The only "problem" is when it comes to math & reading comprehension but it only brought memories that I once was exactly in her shoes. All I wanted to tell her is that I PERFECTLY understood her frustration and that everything is going to be alright b/c I ended up just that & much more - an engineer. It frustrated me b/c I did not know what it was and how to help her. To know the answer would heal me too as well. All I know is how smart she is.

I was skeptical in picking up any book on ADD b/c that was not the direct answer to our behavior from what I've heard. I was able to digest half of the book in just three hours. I cried a river b/c somebody has finally answered my questions. I personally don't read any psychology books b/c my feelings and their perspectives are not congruent but J. Freed & L. Parsons amazed me b/c describes it all. After reading it, I implemented some of the exercises on our routine and sure enough my daughter is highly visual as well as myself. The quest at hand is how to get the school board implement similar practical curriculum towards my daughter's education without the need of going to The White House.

Summary: Very good. Very insightful. Very helpful.
Review: I did not read all of this book (I have a short attention span), but what I did read was so good that I read 80 pages all at once while STANDING UP and supposedly getting ready for bed! I read it to help me with one son in particular, and found myself listed on the pages as well!

Not only does he list characteristics/qualities of an "ADD"/right-brain-dominant person (which helps those who aren't to understand how a person can "tick" differently), but he also lists workable strategies to work WITH (not against) the way a person is internally formed, in order for that person to gain success in the demands of life (which, for a child, means school and home).

Highly readable. Interesting. Offers HOPE! (Hope for parents, their children, and also for adults who see themselves described on the pages.) Lists practical steps to take for improvement.
