Summary: Healing ADD
Review: I thought that Dr. Amen's book was very helpful and informative. This should be required reading for people living with anyone who has ADD. It will help you understand how to help them and how to help themselves. I found this book contained something for everyone. If you're a clinician, you can understand causes of ADD, use of SPECT technology and develop up-to-date treatment interventions. If you are a parent, you can learn new parenting strategies that might really work. Educators can understand how these children impact the learning environment and how to deal with them effectively. If you are a patient, you should know how to advocate for the best treatment possible. So read this book and know what to ask for.

Summary: Disappointment
Review: After reading this book, I thought it would be a good idea to actually visit the clinic for an evaluation. I received two conflicting treatment plans since I was unable to see the original doctor I was assigned to for my follow-up. I had high hopes in figuring out what was wrong but I am now, more confused then ever. I am out alot of money and still do not know what is wrong with me. Please, do your homework before going to his clinic.

Summary: Dr. Amen could be saving many lives..
Review: Dr. Amen is truly a pioneer, in not only neuropsychiatry, but with the entire process of evaluating and treating minimal brain dysfunction. It's "forward-thinkers" such as Dr. Amen, that have always been the root of medical advancement. And, as with any other such medical pioneer who changed the course of medicine for the better, he has been met with some negative feedback.
For those in the medical field who dare and persecute Daniel Amen, you should take a look at the oath hanging on your wall.
Are you following it? Daniel surely is. Daniel is sincere in his desire to help those who need it. One's that everyone has just written off as "bad" or "different".

His current book is packed with information concerning his work with Brain Spect Imaging, and how through such , you can actually "see" the disabling disorders that have crippled so many.

If that wasn't good enough, not only can you see the disorders themselves- but actually make better treatment assesments from the findings! Less of a guessing game now!

Dr. Amen, God bless you and....your work!

Summary: Read Every Page
Review: If this book only contained the information about the areas of the brain involved in ADD and the 6 different classifications of ADD, I would have still given it a rating of 5! This book, however, also contains many chapters dealing with how to help the person with ADD function to his/her fullest potential. I would like to share a few of the many quotes from this book that I highlighted. "A common myth in the lay community is that the use of medication to treat ADD children somehow predisposes them to drug abuse in later life." "The parents' yelling, screaming, and hitting were stimulating to him, and he, unknowingly, used their anger to feel more alert, which is why he did better in school if they had a bad morning at home." "...reinforcing good behavior is a much more effective change agent than giving consequences to bad behavior." "Use attention recording sheets for self-monitoring: The student marks a plus each time he realizes he has been paying attention and a minus each time he realizes his mind has wandered." "Use nonverbal or secret codes to keep the child on track." "It's critical to teach people about their thoughts and to teach them to challenge what they think, rather than just accept blindly the thoughts that go through their heads." "When a person's mind is burdened with many negative thoughts, it affects that person's ability to learn, his or her ability to relate to other people, and his or her physical health." This is the type of book I am sure I will reread many times and loan to my students' parents.

Summary: Thank God For This Book!
Review: All I can say is thank you Dr. Amen and thank God for this book. Too many of us who suffer from ADD have gone off of much needed medication because of the stigma that we have allowed society to put on this real brain disorder. Amen cuts through the ignorant [hype] and says, "Hey, if you want full access to your brain, here are the steps you need to take." Those of us who truly have ADD truly need help. This book is all the help you will need. It will also help you prove to your family and your Doctor, that it's not all in your head, and that it IS all in your head all at the same time! Think about what I just said, and then BUY THE BOOK!

Summary: Healing ADD
Review: There are a lot of good and bad books in bookstores, there are interesting books or not, there are novels, fiction or nonfiction books, etc. This book does not fit into any of the categories listed above. This book is different. It can help hundreds and thousand of people now and many more in the future. The book is about Attention Deficit Disorder - ADD. Doctor Amen shows that ADD is not one disease, but has 6 different forms. It is written in a very easy language. It is filled with stories, which touch hearts, about children, and adults who suffered from unknown problems. It shows, that in many cases problem can be treated, and lives were changed. Some people will recognize themselves: someone, who blames himself of herself, or others for being disorganized, lazy and always late. They will learn, that this is a disease. Parents will be shocked by understanding there is a very good chance their children will inherit this problem. But also there is good news: it can be controlled. To make it clear I will tell my story. I was a quiet and pretty bright girl: an "A" student. I did not make many problems for my parents. But I was and I am the one who suffered my whole life without having an answer why. From time to time - and mostly always - I am arrested by sleepiness and inability to act. I was able to fight it, but believe me, it is not an easy task! My father took me to a special doctor (my regular doctor did not see any problems). Doctor asked: "What about your mother?" "She has something similar, but not so bad as I." "If your mother has the same problem, what do you want? You will live with this condition." It was 55 years ago in the city of Odessa - the former Soviet Union. I did not succumb. As I remember at age 10 I started to exercise, later I was advised to use vitamins. When I was a teenager, I brushed myself with wet and dry towels until my body became pink. As an adult I found an extract from the so-called "Golden Root". Later on, I learned, that it was a stimulant made from ginger. When I came to the USA at the age of 45, I was not able to find "Golden Root". When my sister finally sent it to me, I had high blood pressure, which prevented me for using it. That time my 20-year-old son was the head of our family. He advised me to listen a radio to understand English better. Once I have heard: "If you experience excessive sleepiness during the day, call us, you might have narcolepsy." They recommended me to check for a disease, and asked a doctor to prescribe Ritalin. After an evaluation, a doctor from Columbus Hospital told me that he really did not see narcolepsy. But the whole picture of my conditions shows some problems. He saw my hopeful eyes and prescribed Ritalin. In several days I started to see a shining sun, dark clouds disappeared from the horizon. I had time to see my friends; I came to be more organized and less tardy. I felt myself 20 years younger, I came to be the same person as other people without Ritalin, I was happy. But after a while I needed to change my doctor, and a new one did not want to give me the prescription. I went to another doctor; he sent me to Chicago University to a special unit, which deals with sleeping disorders. "You do not have narcolepsy, no Ritalin; bye, bye!" Another doctor sent me to overnight tests: "You do not have narcolepsy, or depression, but something in between, we do not know what, but if Ritalin helps, you can use it. Each appointment my doctor asks me the same question: "When are you going to decrease Ritalin?" When I brought to him an article of doctor Daniel Amen from Newsweek, he sighed with relief: "Now I know why I have to prescribe you this medicine!" I have the second form of ADD, which is called inattentive. I want to thank doctor Daniel Amen; I wish I could say it looking in his eyes. I dream, that his teaching will be included in programs for medical schools, that every physician would know about it and not ask a sick person: "When are you going to decrease Ritalin, or no Ritalin, bye, bye!"

Summary: On par with "Driven to Distraction"
Review: This book should be as helpful as "Driven to Distraction", if not more so. The author is empathic to ADD sufferers (some people with ADD really do suffer, and so do the people around them). In addition, he writes from extensive clinical experience.

With this book, you can evaluate yourself or someone else; you can read numerous case studies; and you can learn what might help you succeed in spite of ADD. Amen offers a balanced view of therapy, including traditional and alternative methods which he has personally seen to be effective. Besides telling what you should eat and swallow (appropriate food and medicine), he tells you how you can practice thinking so that ADD doesn't hinder your enjoyment of life.

A hopeful and encouraging book. It made me wish I could bring my whole family to his clinic.

Summary: Finally- Scientific Proof ADD exists - and readable too!
Review: As an Adult ADDer, I was extremely pleased with this book - it explained everything in basic, easy to understand terms! It shows how ADD is more than just hyperactivity and boys and kids! It contains a self-test to review with your own doctor and info about all kinds of medications most doctors aren't aware of that help with the different kinds. He also lists natural and other alternatives, the standard and additional extensive list of resources and help (from support groups, on-line and in person, to a list of physicians familiar with his research). If you can only afford (time and money) to get 1 ADD book - make this the one!!!
