Rating: Summary: Great help to not only me, but also my sister. Review: After reading this book, I bought one for my sister who also suffers from Panic Disorder. It has helped us both enormously. First by letting us know we aren't crazy, second that it is hereditary (therefore genetic), and third that there is something we can do to help ourselves. Dr. Bourne also writes in a step-by-step easy to understand method where you can pick the chapters that apply to you.
Rating: Summary: NO FLUFF AND NONSENSE, JUST SOUND, PRACTICLE ADVICE! Review: As a counsellor, I was very impressed with the layout and content of this book. It does not contain a lot of patronizing fluff, but contains sound practicle advice presented in an interesting and helpful format. If you or someone you know suffers from anxiety or phobias, this valuable workbook can be a lifeline to those in need. The exercises and techniques covered in the workbook take an inside look at anxiety and cover issues such as holistic treatments, nutrition and relaxation (key issues in treating anxiety)various psychological factors and overviews, and finally, support. For the price, the book is quite complete. The results, however, can only be measured by the amount of time, energy and commitment the reader puts forth to making the workbook effective. It is important to remember life-long changes do not occur over a short period of time, and the desired end results will only be seen through self-discipline and long-term commitment. Unfortunately, there are no quick cures for anxiety or phobias, but this book has the potential to help deal with the issues related to these problems.
Rating: Summary: One of the best, practical guides I have found on the topic Review: Bourne has written a highly informative and readable guide on anxiety and panic attacks -- one of the best that I have found. Besides containing excellent information, the Workbook provides the reader with step-by-step, deliberative nonjudgemental ways of reducing anxiety and regaining one's authentic self. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Useful Tool for Therapists or as a Self-Help Workbook Review: Did you know that anxiety disorder is fairy common and affects approximately one out of every ten people in the United States at any given time. Could we all be living under too much stress? I think so. "Research conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health shows that anxiety disorders are the number-one mental health problem among American women and are second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men." Have you ever felt panicky? Are you fearful of entering certain places? Are you anxious in social situations? Do you feel apprehensive for extended periods of time? This workbook is a practical guide that offers help to anyone struggling with panic attacks, agoraphobia, social fears, generalized anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. Dr. Edmund J. Bourne, Ph.D. is a psychologist and author who specializes in the treatment of phobias and other anxiety disorders. Some of the Topics Include: Causes of Anxiety Disorders Visualization for Anxiety Overcoming Negative Self-Talk Real-Life Desensitization Coping with Panic Attacks Imagery Desensitization Identifying and Expressing Feelings Existential and spiritual Perspectives on Anxiety Changing Mistaken Beliefs Relaxations Techniques Physical Exercise Asserting Yourself Nutrition Medication How to Create Your Own Recovery Program Self-Esteem (including creating a relationship with your inner child) This book emphasizes that anxiety can be a result of cumulative, long-term stress and there is a focus on adopting lifestyle changes to promote a more relaxed, balanced and healthy approach to life. The chapter on Relaxation gives some great advice. Simple techniques like breathing properly or visualizing yourself in a peaceful scene can give immediate relief. There are lists of coping statements you can say to yourself to encourage calmness when you feel panic symptoms coming on. The list of 57 affirmations help you counter mistaken beliefs. Like, you tell yourself that you are responsible and in control of your life or you are willing to accept yourself the way you are and will take small steps to recover at your own pace. I also liked the "Self-Nurturing Activities" which is a fun list of activities to make yourself feel good. Something as simple as taking a warm bath to sleeping out under the stars. The "Life Events Survey" is very interesting. The Death of a spouse, divorced, marital separation or being fired from work are at the top of the stress scale. Christmas comes in at 12 on the stress score as compared to 29 when you have trouble with inlaws. For example: If you got married, changed to a different line of work, changed residence, and took two vacations, your total stress score would be at 132. According to this chart, my current stress level is at 143. So, I am below the level of cumulative stress. Between 150 and 300 you would be suffering from chronic stress depending on how you perceived and coped with any particular life events. I would recommend this book to anyone who is dealing with: Panic Disorder Agoraphobia Social Phobia Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Acute Stress Disorder Food Allergies "But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself." -Desiderata by Max Erhmann The most comprehensive book I've seen on this subject!
Rating: Summary: Best book on anxiety I've read Review: Dr. Bourne's workbook is full of wonderful and useful information. Everything from negative self talk to nutrition and exercise, this workbook discusses how and why many suffer from anxiety as well as several different methods to help yourself get out of the trap. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Thank you, Dr. Bourne!
Rating: Summary: Not just for phobics and panick attacks!!! Review: I agree completely with everybody about the value of this book. The author is so smart, and such a good writer, I get the feeling he could have done anything he wanted, and I feel great gratitude that he has chosen to devote his talents to helping some of the most suffering people in the world. After all, emotional suffering can be much worse than physical suffering, IMHO. The point I feel I need to add is that this book is not just for those who have panic attacks or phobias, its for anybody who feels that fear has too much control over them, and for anybody who is more than mildly shy. Shyness that holds you back and makes you feel like you're not getting everything you could out of life is an anxiety disorder, and if you have that kind of shyness you should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Bravo Review: I discovered the book Don't Panic by Reid Wilson in a group therapy and that lead me to Dr Claire Weekes's book called Peace from Nervous Suffering. Even though I learned so munch from the two authors above, it took the book by Edmund J Bourne's Anxiety Phobia Workbook to put it all together in his holistic approach. It explains to you what is going on and gives the tools to deal with panic and live a productive life. I must add that it takes hard work to recover so read this book and practice what you learn daily everyday.
Rating: Summary: Easy to read and apply Review: I found that this workbook was perfect for me because it taught me what anxiety is, how it's triggered, and how phobias play a role in this. It was especially helpful to read chapters focused solely on nutrition, spirituality, exercise, overcoming negative self-talk, and medication (medical and alternative). As I am learning to work through anxiety, I continue to come back to the workbook for reassurance and help.
Rating: Summary: everything you ever wanted to know about anxiety Review: I found this book very useful in helping others learn about all aspects of anxiety disorders and involved information they need to know or look at to understand all of what may be going on with them. a good hands on book.
Rating: Summary: Hope When it Seems Like There is None Review: I have struggled with anxiety for seven years. Often, I have found myself asking, Why me? My days were filled with bewilderment and confusion about what caused my condition as well as how to best go about treating it. I felt weak and confused and desperately wanted to avoid simply relying on medication as a quick way out. This book was my torch of hope in my utter darkness of despair. Dr. Bourne teaches you that it is not critical to know why you are experiencing what you are experiencing but more importantly teaches you how to deal with it. You are given numerous strategies for a long and lasting recovery. When you are on the anxiety/panic attack merry-go-round you think that no one and nothing can help you but this book can. It is a workbook and you will have to work at your recovery but anything worth having does require some work and who can possibly put a price on peace of mind. You will relate to this book and use it for the rest of your life! It is a must read and contains everything that you will need for a lasting recovery.
