Summary: Doesn't help alleviate fears at all
Review: The part I liked about the book was all the case studies. I could totally relate to the person who is terrorized by flying in a plane or driving over a really high bridge. However the book then goes on and on about following your dreams and you can achieve sucess, etc. etc. I was looking for some coping skills to help while I was in a plane or driving over a high bridge such as maybe some type of breathing, but she doesn't touch on that at all. I can't figure out what was going on in her mind. I thought the book would discuss coping mechanisms. I read the entire book and threw it in the trash.

Summary: Not my type of Book
Review: I read this book hoping to gain a wealth of insight into the problem of fears and was disappointed to find that the first half of the book went about describing different case studies with the hope of having the reader to identify. The amount of info that deals with handling these fears could have been condensed into a pamphlet. Sorry, Lucinda, but I was bored with it.

Summary: Read the opening paragraph...
Review: When I read the opening paragraph of this book I was sold! It was like Lucinda knew me personally and I could relate to so much in this book. So much so that I purchased her 15 week program for anxiety and depression. It's changed my life! This book is wonderful but if you suffer from anxiety you will probably need more than a book. Using her behavioral modification program has changed my life. No matter what I recommend you check out this book, it will help put things in perspective!

Summary: For Beverly Tatum -- I haven't read the book but...
Review: Beverly, I believe you need to reconsider throwing this book into the trash. I haven't read the book, but I find it hard to imagine that the book specifically said "it's your fault". If it literally says so, then you just need to rephrase it. Anxiety is produced by your thoughts, and you can control your thoughts. It's not your fault, but your responsibility to change. And this is positive! If it is your responsibility to change, it means you truly can do it and is at your hands. Doesn't it feel good to think the cure is as close as you wish? People who get depressed may inadvertently distort not only their life events but the words in a book. It is important to read carefully and just absorb what works for you, if it doesn't work then throw it. Hope this was helpful, if not, my apologies.

Summary: Read ONLY if have very mild anxiety-otherwise dangerous
Review: I have been fighting Generalized Anxiety Disorder for several years. Most of this time has been spent trying to manage the manifestations of GAD - anorexia, depression, agoraphobia, panic attacks and so on. If you are someone who really is only a "worrier" and plays "what-if" games with yourself, then this book is for you. However, if you have more serious anxiety issues, throw this book into the trash. It's dangerous to tell someone who is depressed, fighting a multitude of problems, that this disease is their fault. When fighting anxiety and your feeling of loss of control, to be told this situation is your fault is devastating. People with our disease often consider suicide to escape the pain, the guilt etc. The approach in this book is very dangerous in the wrong hands. Do not read these type of "mass psychology" without seing and talking with your physican first. This one is irresponsible and could lead someone to take drastic measures to alleviate their pain. Throw this book out and don't read it first!!

Summary: The Biggest Help In Developing My Psyche - Bar None
Review: Linguists say, "Communication is what defines us as being human." But what happens when suddenly you have trouble speaking?

From 1993-1994, as I was going through many "self-help" tape programs, books, and being introspective, I evolved so much, with the materials, but didn't have someone to mirror who I had become.

And in these years, I had major anxiety attacks when I anytime I talked one-on-one with someone who I'd known before I had evolved alone.

While I have not read "From Panic to Power," from cover to cover, I did buy and use Ms. Bassett's "Attacking Anxiety," program.

I am living testiment that this program will guide you from anxiety to power.

Anxiety, as Fritz Pearl described, "is really the exact distance from where you are now to where you want to be."

Through the breathing exercises, and the awareness of your scary thoughts, you can turn your anxiety into opportunities to compassionately respond to your subconscious self. That is what I did. It works.

And I have had many "opportunities" to test this.

When you place yourself fully in the present moment, regardless of what your past experiences were with your interlocutor, you are free to respond to life, instead of reacting to your past.

Fear is focusing upon your past. Serenity is knowing who you are, and loving yourself, regardless of what is going on.

Read this book to find a part of yourself that just wants to be loved (that is what anxiety is telling you).

Review: I am not to the extreme, but I have had issues with anxiety as long as I can remember. This book has helped me to understand what I am doing to myself, and how to stop it. The most important thing this book has taught me is that I do not have a mental disorder, and that I have control of my own thoughts; which cause my anxiety. If you have anxiety of any form, the best thing that you can do is buy this book. HONESTLY....It was the best thing that I have ever done for myself!

Summary: The light at the end of the tunnel is NOT a train!!!
Review: I laughed, I cried-- and I'm only on page 74.
This is about me. This is the book I've been needing.
I'm not at the extreme, but I've been suffering from anxiety for a long time. And I know now that I'm NOT physically ill, or mentally, and that there is really no such thing as "normal"--I think "normal" is a word we use to unfairly compare ourselves to an ideal that does not exist.
If you are a sensitive person (which can be a gift as well as a curse) or if you, like me, have had panic attacks and other physical symptoms of anxiety (rapid heartbeat, fluttering heart, chest pains, dizziness, headaches, stomach problems, nausea, hot & cold flashes, insomnia, sleep paralysis, and a great many more) and you've ruled out medical problems, then you need to change the way you think.
Ms. Bassett claims it's just that easy and I'm starting to believe her.
The part that has helped the most so far is her list of personality traits that make people susceptible to anxiety and the shift you need to make in your mind to make things better. For example, the traits on the left can be self-destructive but for each one there's a better way to go:
*Perfectionism to High Standards (There is NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT--but it's okay to have high standards)
*Inner Nervousness to High Vitality (Try thinking of your anxiety as excitement for change and not impending doom)
*Overreative to Healthy Perspective (Sensitive people are fabulous but need to use that trait as a power, not as a disability.)
*Guilt Feelings to Taking Action (Shakespeare once said something to the effect of what is passed and past helping should be past grief--same thing. If you have guilt over something going on now, use that as energy to fix it)
*Criticism sensitivity to personal insight (I may realllllly dislike my boss and may reallllly have chafed at my last performance review, but could there possibly be something in the criticism to honestly make me a better me?)
*Emotional sensitivity to knowing yourself (I hate scary movies and violent ones. I think the universe should not suffer Eminem to exist. All of those things upset me; I need to accept that and just stop trying to watch scary movies and just start ignoring Eminem.)
and 7 others whose descriptions I haven't read through yet b/c I was so deeply affected by the first 6 that I had to share with you.
Okay--enough about me: let me just say that I have a very strong feeling that this book is going to help me. If it can do that, it can help you too.

Summary: This book saved my life
Review: No exaggeration on my part. Lucinda is a comforting, sane voice amidst the self-help book drivel out there. Most important to me was the fact that she has EXPERIENCED anxiety disorder herself; it is as if her desire to help others is therefore genuine, she's been there and wants to pull others out of this terrible situation so they don't feel how she felt. My favorite thing about the book: Lucinda speaks of feeling "spacy" and "feelings of unreality". I never knew what the hell was wrong with me when this would happen. I thought I was going crazy. Imagine how comforted I was to read Lucinda had those SAME SYMPTOMS! Her assurance that no, I'm NOT crazy, moved me to tears. Please, if you need help with anxiety, you owe it to yourself to invest in this book.
