Rating: Summary: The most comprehensive guide to Aspies I've read! Review: As a 25 year veteran elementary teacher and the mother of a AS son who was recently diagnosed, I have read every book I could get my hands on about High functioning austism and Asperger Syndrome. This book, by the co-owners of the excellent OASIS web site, is the best resource I've come across. The two authors draw upon their own experiences as parents of AS children, a great deal of research, and information gleaned from contributors to their web site's message boards to provide information about diagnosis, schooling, emotional life, medication, and growing up in the Aspie world. It is a well-written, comprehensive, and interesting book that should be read by every parent and educator who deals with these "Little Professors." I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: The Bible for Parents of Children with Asperger's Syndrome Review: Barb and Patty have done a wonderful job of consolidating their knowledge of Asperger's Syndrome into a wonderfully readable and practical text that all parents of AS children will appreciate. This will be the "Doctor Spock" reference guide for parents and professionals who live and work with AS children.
Rating: Summary: Practical and Insight-filled Review: Filled with practical and useful information on everything from initial diagnosis, interventions, treatments, medications, school issues, family issues and more. All presented with sound supporting information from current research. A must for any parent whose child has been diagnosed with Asperger's/High functioning autism. The authors'personal humorous moments and insights are a very nice touch and make the reader aware of the struggles faced by so many who are touched in one way or another by Asperger's. A very good resource as well for school professional libraries for the nice overview of the disorder, its complexity, and challenges in meeting the needs of those with Asperger's/HFA.

There are 2 things I couldn't put down. This book and my cup of S o y f e e. It's made from organic soyabeans which you brew just like coffee. No caffeine and I don't miss it either. Look for on the web at www. S oycoffee.com.
A very good resource for school professional libraries as an overview of the disorder, its complexities and challenges in meeting the needs of those with Asperger's/HFA. Great Book. Thanks.
Rating: Summary: The Quintessential Guide for Asperger Syndrome Review: Having just read the book, I can honestly say that I couldn't put it down. At first, I wasn't even reading it in order...just opening to a page and reading therein was wonderful. There are gems on each page. Especially wonderful was the help with special ed issues and school matters. This book will allow all who know and love a child (or adult) with Asperger Syndrome to understand the unique views of these fine people. After reading, I came to the realization that their strengths often outweigh their challenges, if only we can open our minds and our hearts to the incredible gifts that these children own and share with the world.
Rating: Summary: A comprehensive overview Review: I am a pediatrician with a 6 year old son with Asberger's. I have always been interested in Developmental Disabilities and consider myself a relative expert, but my son's condition continues to drive me to learn more and more. This book provides a relatively unbiassed view of the most current information available. It is long but not long-winded. The chapters are appropriately divided and give excellent, practical advice for wading through the alphabet soup of IEP, OT, PT, SI, etc. that is so often a new world for parents. I appreciated a fairly good overview of common conditions that often accompany Asberger's, such as OCD and ADHD. There's such overlap that a lot of families get confused when one begins and another ends, etc. Often the lines are simply too blurred to know, so this information is vital. Most importantly, this book takes a hard look at the ripple effect this condition has on the family - coping is often a full time job. I appreciated that the book touches on what to tell siblings & the child him/herself, something I struggle with. It's a delicate balance that the book effectively discussed. Often I found myself crying a bit because I again recognized my son in their descriptions. Although the diagnosis autism of any type is difficult to accept for your child, the assurance of a correct diagnosis is extremely powerful. The bulk of the book is spent on the "Now what?!" which is what parents crave - information on how to get to the next step and beyond. I have reread the book a 2nd time to glean even more from a 2nd reading.
Rating: Summary: THE book to own to begin learning about Asperger Syndrome Review: I now have a small library of books and articles on Asperger Syndrome, but if I recommend a single resource to someone, THIS book is it. I read it from cover to cover but it is also an invaluable reference book on all aspects of AS from diagnosis to current treatment options. I found the section on Special Education Basics particulary helpful as my husband and I started weaving through the often bewildering process of special education in the public school system for our son. The book includes a large number of additional references to satisfy nearly any question on more information. Lastly, I appreciated the very caring and yet practical way in which the book is written which gave me some much needed confidence that Asperger Syndrome was something my family and my son could handle and work with to his best advantage for the future. I'm so grateful that the authors wrote this book!
Rating: Summary: Informative and complete Review: I received my copy of OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome shortly after it was published in May of 2002 and it has been an indispensable source of information ever since. Aside from my own need for wisdom and support, I have loaned the book to teachers and friends and consulted it on several occasions when people have called me with concerns about their own kids. Now family members and friends consider me the expert on Autistic Spectrum Disorders, but I have to give credit where it is due. Patty Romanowski Bashe and Barb Kirby are the experts, and were able to cull "the good stuff" from dozens of sources so that we can have one definitive and essential volume.

Rating: Summary: Run, do not walk, to get this book Review: If you are a parent with a young child who has been newly diagnosed with Asperger's, this is the FIRST book you should get. When you are first dealing with diagnosis, you have a temptation to read everything. There are other terrific books out there, but not as practical, personal and useful. I wish we had it when our now almost six year old daughter was diagnosed two years ago. Loads of information, but not written in overly clinical language, which makes it easy to read. Very helpful for relatives, teachers, etc. as well.
