Rating: Summary: Must-read for parents of late-talking children Review: I think I've read every book on late talkers there is, and this is the most helpful in terms of what parents can and should do for such children. The book contains workable, practical suggestions, which have worked very well for my two-year old boy. The book is very accessible, well-researched, and comforting as well. Definitely a must-read!
Rating: Summary: If your child is a late talker just read this book!!! Review: I too wanted to know the same thing, why isn't my daughter talking yet? This book did give us the answer! Since my 33 months old child is a late talker the title of this book caught my eye! It's due to this book that she is now in speech therapy and starting to talk! My daughter was diagnosed with "expresive speech delay". This book helped explain that my daughter needed ways to talk to us even if she couldn't always do it with words. She was not being bratty or spoiled, she was trying to talk, something she struggled with just about every waking moment of her short life! This book opened my eyes to how to make life easier for her and for us as a family. After just a couple of weeks of speech therapy and knowing how to help her at home, my daughter for the first time called me "mommy" the other day at the store and I almost fell over!!! I don't know how long it would have taken to get her in for a speech evaluation if it hadn't been for The Late Talker book. This book contained so much advice that there is no way I could lend it out, this book is my reference, and it brought me so much happiness and hope. I just want to say thank you to the author and tell the world what a great book this is!!! Thank you Thank you!!
Rating: Summary: "The Late Talker"-An amazing effort! Review: I was a Masters student from speech and hearingwhen I had first heard about "CHERAB" and contacted Ms.Lisa Geng. She offered to send me this book and I am very grateful to her for that.It helps me a lot when I talk to parents regarding their child's problem and I invariably refer them to the "CHERAB".I found the chapter on food supplements especially informative since this is a relatively new concept for us in India.I also found that the book gave me a lot of practical suggestions regarding how to deal with children with apraxia.Reading from a parent's point of view was very interesting in itself too.Since apraxia is a very rare disorder, students like us may not get a real idea, especially in India where the awareness is not as much as there is in the West.I think this book would help students and parents alike and I wish the authors all the best with their future endaevours!
Rating: Summary: Can't recommend high enough Review: I was so tired of hearing my son was just a late talker. I wasn't worried, but I had questions and wanted to know what I could do to help my child. Why is he not talking yet? Does he need therapy? As a father I absolutely loved this book. It's cram packed with information on how to work with my son to help him. The chapters are broken down by topic ie: therapy, things to do at home to help, etc. Simply put this is a must read for any parent of a child who has a speech problem. Best book and only book I've found so far that gives specifics on how and why your child may have a speech delay from an easy to understand parent/professional point of view.
Rating: Summary: A call-to-action for parents & caregivers of any late talker Review: I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly concerned that a child may have a speech delay. I only wish I had read a book like this when my preschooler was 15 months old (the time at which I first started having those nagging feelings that something just wasn't quiet right with his speech development). Instead he was 27 months old when he was finally diagnosed with a speech delay because well-meaning people advised us to adopt a "wait and see" approach. By doing so, he lost one year of very valuable speech therapy. This book contains a wealth of information: signs of possible disorders vs. a mere speech delay; the importance of obtaining the right kinds of therapy and evaluations; dealing with insurance companies, early-intervention programs and school systems; how to be your child's best advocate; the amazing benefits of essential fatty acid supplementation; things parents can do at home with their child to stimulate speech development; internet sites, support groups, and so much more! In short, this book contains everything you'd ever need to know or want to ask to give your late talker the best head start possible!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Resource Book!! Review: I've been spreading the word about this book and would have loved to have had this valuable information a couple of years ago when we first started our journey with our son and apraxia. But, I am thrilled that the information is out and available now for others to use and enjoy. This book takes you through the very early stages of speech problems all the way through the teen-age years. It has a wealth of information and really relates to parents of children with speech problems. Thanks for writing it.
Rating: Summary: A great investment! Review: If there were only one book I could own as a parent of a "late talker" child, it would be this one. I've read many books on speech problems due to my daughter who is now 6, but this one is by far the best. I found this book very helpful early on, and while I read it from cover to cover when I bought it, I still read certain chapters. This book has helped us get therapy through both insurance and school to help our little girl. Living in a small town it's nice to know there is someone to help us with these type of things, and that we are not alone. I now know there is great hope that our daughter will be able to achieve her dreams, and how to help her get there. I consider this book a great investment.
Rating: Summary: Beware of Efalex chapter.... Review: In this book there's a chapter that really pushes Efalex and supplements similar to it that will supposedly help tremendously in a child's speech delay. Well, apparently this same Efalex supplement was pushed on children with ADHD. There's a complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission on this supplement. If you search in a search engine under FTC and Efalex combined you can find the complaint. So while I won't say the entire book is bad, I just want to warn fellow parents about that chapter.
Rating: Summary: wow! Review: Late Talker Book Review I highly recommend this book. It is a must have for any parent or persons who work with children, including child care providers, foster care/adoption agencies. It is an excellent resource and very easy to read, and informative. It also explains the differences and definitions of speech disorders, Individual Education Programs and insurance coverage codes. When you have children you never know what you will get. As a parent of two special needs children, this book also helps you overcome some hurdles that you might have come across. I wouldn't be surprised once more people know about it, that it goes on the best seller list! Thank you Lisa, Dr. Agin, and others for helping make this book a reality and a great resource for parents! Jeanne Buesser ...
Rating: Summary: Excellent Resource for Parents Review: My 2 year old was recently diagnosed with verbal apraxia. I have had no one to turn to for information (besides the web), because I've been on a wait list at a number of Speech Therapy Centers. This book has provided me with a sense of empowerment, to take some control of the situation, and help my daughter as best as I can while I wait for the Professional Therapists to guide us. After reading most of it in one sitting, I feel more educated, and optimistic about the diagnosis & prognosis for my daughter. Thank you so much Dr. Agin, Ms. Geng, & Mr. Nicholl!
