Rating: Summary: Sears knows best? Review: I purchased this book because it appeared to be one that looked at discipline and the child in a very practical way. Though I found some of the information helpful, there were many instances of highly judgemental advice offered. I had expected to see a variety of approaches, all imformed by the basic tenets of attachment parenting, but felt some of the advice was not really applicable, specifically the section on dealing with sleep problems with young children.
Rating: Summary: A must for the parent who cares about their child!!!! Review: Dr. Sears and his wife address everything!! Emphasis is placed on attachment parenting from the start. The book covers your traditional discipline questions, but it also includes topics you always wanted to ask, but never knew how to ask. The Sears' discuss bothersome behaviors (picking nose, etc...) and the emotional discipline (growth and understanding) that you, as a parent, must understand first to help your child understand. Other topics are self-esteem, raising the shy child, sleep discipline, morals and manners, etc... A fabulous book--a must for the attachment parent-the book you wish your parents would have read on discipline!
Rating: Summary: great if taken with a grain of salt Review: If you have read "the baby book" and are using the attachment skills then most of what is in this book comes naturally. It gives examples and helps keep parents on track with ideas to continue with discipline while keeping the parent child bond intact. HOWEVER, I do not buy into certain parts of the Sears ideal. At times his approach seems too touchy feely and my not have as much affect on a strong willed child. I have three boys. With my 1st two boys, I was able to work with them a little more on the points discussed in the book. My third child (age 3) has a personality that doesn't lend itself well to Sears discipline. The book did give me some pointers on not letting him get to the point of needing to be corrected, but most solutions I used with my older 2 don't help with my youngest. I think if you have read the baby book and KNOW you child, this book reitterates and expands much of the same things and is a nice building block, but not a the end all and be all of discipline.
Rating: Summary: Dr Sears is IT, need I say more! :) Review: I am a big fan of the Dr. Sears library, and my opinion of this book is no different! He is a awesome source for all parents. This is a must read, and eary on! The Baby Book, is also wonderful, and the closest thing to a baby manual as there is! Any of his books wonderful, but I really think this one is a MUST read for all parents early on, so that they can build the foundation neccesary to make disipline easier on ourselves, and our child. A+ again Dr. Sears!
Rating: Summary: ok but... Review: I was hoping to find more information on discipling under the age of 2, and this book seems to be geared towards the older child even though it says birth to age 10. I don't believe in spanking and I am tired of yelling no all day long to my 14 m/o! But I love dr sears and I know this will be a helpful book on down the road.
Rating: Summary: Not the best Sears book Review: I own many books by Dr Sears and have learned and gained much from them. This one isn't nearly as good as the others. The touchy-feely approach to discipline doesn't really help me with my children. They just don't respond in a textbook fashion to the ideas presented. An alternative that is in line with the Sears methods is Kid Cooperation: How to Stop Yelling, Nagging and Pleading and Get Your Kids to Cooperate.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best! Review: I highly recommend this book to all parents, regardless of how they plan to raise their child. It provides a commonsense, practical and gentle approach that really works! Thank you, William and Mary Sears.
Rating: Summary: Great advice from great experience Review: Like other books in the Sears' library, this is a well-written wealth of sensible, practical and valuable resourse of information. An intuitive approach gives the reader numerous possibilities for uniqely using the techniques that work beautifully. An added bonus: the introspective analysis of your own parenting stylie BEFORE and DURING the reading of this book gives you a wonderful opportunity to heal the wrongness in your own upbringing, to better yourself and discipline yourself as you learn about parenting from the Searses and from your child. The best possible therapy for the whole family.
Rating: Summary: Great reference book. Review: Just like most William Sears's books, The Discipline Book is a great reference. It is thorough-- covering everything from mealtime manners to annoying behaviors to nonviolent discipline. This book has been a big help with our toddler.
Rating: Summary: Sears does it again Review: Innovative, practical, sensible advice. The Sears, once again, take you to a place where you know you should be-- putting your child's esteem first and at the same time raising a self-disciplined, socially responsible child. Best of all, this book offers discipline solutions for very young children -- which I have found difficult to find addressed anywhere else.
