Rating: Summary: Understanding the beast that lies within. Review: I have spent the last four years in and out of the princpal's office. As well as in and out of the doctor's office. I was lost and drowning in a maze of dignoses. That was until I picked up the Aug. Time mag. with the artical about bipolar children. That artical lead me to the book The Bipolar Child... As I beagin to read, I also began to cry. Ever word written was about my son. I read the book in record speed and have used it as a referance in my presuit of the best medical care for my son. I knew after reading this book that my son was suffering and not just a "bad child". It gave me hope.
Rating: Summary: It was just okay Review: if you are the parent of small children with bi polar disorder then this may be more helpful to you than it was to me. my kids are over 18 and i did not recognize the disorder when they were younger. i recognized some of the symptioms from the book in my kids, but since they are older the book really had little to offer me.
Rating: Summary: How did I survive without it! Review: The Bi-polar child has opened a whole new world of understanding not only to me but my childs siblings, teachers, extended family and friends. I came away from this book informed about every aspect of this disorder currently understood. From Mood Charts to treatment strategies, to just plain commom sense when dealing with a child that see's most everything as a crisis. Maybe most importantly of all though was the deep compassion that was renewed as I could understand that my child was struggling with a "disorder" rather that an "attitude problem". A Must Read!
Rating: Summary: The Bipolar Parent's Bible Review: This was the first book I got when my own children were diagnosed and it was, and is, my bible. The book was a reassurance and a source of much support in the weeks and months following the diagnosis. It's filled with practical information on recognizing mood swings, coping with difficult behavior, educating teachers and caretakers on the needs of a bipolar child. I would highly recommend this book to parents of bipolar kids, loved ones with a bipolar child in the family, or professionals dealing with bipolar kids.
Rating: Summary: The first book to get about bipolar kids Review: If your child has just been diagnosed, or even if they haven't been yet but bipolar is a thought, this is the first book to buy about bipolar children. The book contains very useful information on how to help your child.
Rating: Summary: The bible for childhood bipolar disorder Review: I'd say this book is the reference standard for parents, caretakers, and teachers of bipolar children. Authoritative and thorough, this book is required reading if you wish to more fully understand bipolar children. There really are a lot of subtle aspects of the disease that make it more complex than one might think, and this book does an excellent job of discussing all the these fine details of the illness. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".
Rating: Summary: Put this in your shopping cart NOW! It's an absolute must! Review: This book is the "Bible" among those of us having bipolar children. The first time I read this book after my 8 year old son was finally diagnosed properly 4 years ago, I cried with relief that FINALLY what our family had been living with was right there in 'black & white'. From detailed profiles about a bipolar child to help with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), this book covers so much. It brings peace to your chaos...it helps give you control over this crazy situation. As we say in the Bipolar Parents support group, "RUN, don't walk -- buy this book NOW!"For a more light-hearted fictional story that is great reading with your BP child as well as with the rest of the family, check out Caroline McGee's "Matt The Moody Hermit Crab." In this story, you'll walk through the daily trials of a crab family who has a bipolar child. It's a great way to break the ice with those that aren't comfortable with the cold, hard facts of BP. And, it's great for afflicted children to read stories that parallel their lives.
Rating: Summary: The "Bible" of Child Onset Bipolar Disorder Review: This is the most comprehensive and definitive book I've read. When we first began to consider the possibility that our daughter was bipolar, our psychologist recommended we read "The Bipolar Child". It was as though we had written some of the chapters ourself! Not only do the Papolos' go into great detail about the symptoms of bipolar disorder, they discuss the impact on the family and relationships. Their discussion of medications and side effects is very comprehensive. This is a must have for anyone struggling through the ups and downs of a child with bipolar disorder.
Rating: Summary: bipolar child Review: this book is a must be for any parent that is raising a bi-polar child. It is the bi-polar "Bible" if it may be stated. the author and his wife have devoted their practice to help these children in anyway possible. He is always on top of anything new that comes out.
