Summary: Better than all the rest
Review: This is my first pregnancy, so I had lots of questions. I went overboard on the books - I own 3. The other 2 are informative, and I am glad I had a chance to read them, but if a woman wants one book that will answer her pregnancy questions, "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" is the one I recommend. This book explains the stages of the pregnancy, both for the mom and baby, at a nice pace, weekly. I own "What to Expect When You Are Expecting", which goes month by month, but that seems too general because I want to know what is going on with my body and my baby now, not "sometime this month". "The Pregnancy Journal" goes day by day, which seems to be a bit much - nobody's pregnancy is going to follow the book exactly. With this book, I can read about what will be happening the following week and share the information with my husband, which makes him feel more involved. I love the fact that it explains how I am changing, how the baby is changing, and what I should be expecting (it's very reasuring when a book tells you that the crazy things you are doing and feeling are normal). I recommend this book over any of the others I have seen.

Summary: Week by week isn't the way it goes!
Review: This book tidies up a scheduled read, but week by week isn't the way a pregnancy goes. There is much overlap among weeks and gaps in the so-so weeks that make this formula only a catchy title.

I don't agree with those that say it says what can go wrong week by week. I think any information is better than no information, and you can't discuss pregnancy thoroughly without mentioning the bad stuff. Dr. DiLeo's "The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy" discusses everything too, but gave me a perspective on what the chances were of bad things happening, which made for a much more reassuring guide. (That book also goes trimester by trimester, which is a more applicable separation of pregnancy.)

Summary: best ever!
Review: This is my first pregnancy, and we bought a half dozen books. After getting the jist of things, we wanted one that had a week-by-week guide to it, rather than a monthly update. We then bought this book. As a couple, we enjoyed (and still do! - i'm only 9 weeks!) seeing what is happening and how the baby is changing on a week-by-week basis. There are pictures for each week, as well as an "acutal size" picture of the baby. For me, this is by far the best book we have encountered for our first pregnancy and are excited and eager to learn about what is going on. Definitely NOT a disapointment!

Summary: If you can only buy one pregnancy book, buy this one!
Review: This really is one of the best, if not the best, books about pregnancy. For women and men going through the process, it gives wonderfully informative tidbits each week about the development of the baby and the changes to the mom's body, along with sketches to see how baby and mom are growing. I found it best to read it at the beginning of each new week to keep up with my baby's development process. Unlike some other books on pregnancy, it focuses on the positive, providing useful advice while avoiding overwhelming readers with too much about what can go wrong during pregnancy. It is well worth purchasing, since it is a reassuring reference tool for expectant parents.

Summary: Condescending tone
Review: One of my friends recommended this book to me. But she also wanted her doctor to "knock her out" as soon as possible and not wake her up till the baby was born. The impression this physician-author gave me was that he comes from that old school in which the mothers *were* knocked out and a pregnant woman didn't need to worry her pretty little head because the (male) doctor would take care of everything. Although it's fun to have a new section to read every week instead of only every month, I found the condescending tone so annoying that I stopped reading it with about twelve weeks to go. The actual information in this book can be a useful supplement to a more comprehensive book, but this is not a "stand-alone" pregnancy book.

Summary: great reference
Review: I bought this book with my first pregnancy and I found it very easy to follow. The explainations are easy to follow and the book includes info for the father-to-be too. I love the week by week format, it's much easier to follow than month by month. I'm now expecting our 2nd child.

Summary: I USE THIS EVERY PREGNANCY!
Review: I'm pregnant with my 3rd baby now, and I still go to this to read what's going on every week. "What to Expect" is good as well, but after you read your info for the month, that's it. (The two together are a great pair.) Week-by-Week gives you something to read every week, and I know we all want to know what's going on right then!! I have fun talking to friends and family about the baby, and being able to tell them just how big he/she is each week.

I believe that knowledge alleviates fear, so being told what problems could happen in pregnancy is great. I would rather be informed with what could happen than know nothing. Other books I've seen have a "when something goes wrong" chapter or something else to that effect. I would rather read about possible problems a little at a time, since most women don't have real problems with pregnancy, than getting the full blow of it all at once and then feeling overwhelmed and REALLY worried.

As for other reviews I read about Dr. Curtis arbitrarily placing topics with different weeks, is it that hard to look in the index and find what you're looking for? Would any book on pregnancy be able to properly place every person's symptoms and problems exactly when they experience them?

I love this book, and always recommend it to friends I hear are pregnant!

Summary: Was this really written by a qualified OB/GYN?
Review: Did a qualified OB/GYN really write this book? The "Dads Tips" are like something from the 1950s, insulting to most Dads living in 2004, my husband and I just laughed at them. What really put me off the book was on page 258, when talking about Is It a Boy or Is It a Girl, Dr Curtis suggests, and I quote "a more reliable source (than an Ultrasound examination) might be a mother, mother-in-law, or someone who can look at you and tell by how you're carrying the baby if it is a boy or a girl"!!!!!I am sorry, but there is absolutely no accuracy in this method whatsoever, it is an old wives tale!. At that point I decided the best place for the book was in the trash can. Thank goodness this is my third pregnancy and I know better!!!!

Summary: Week-by-week format is very appealing
Review: My husband and I really enjoyed the week-by-week format of this book. We would flip open the book each Sunday night and read head to see what that week had in store for us and our baby. It became a very special ritual for us as a couple. Other books that also were helpful to us in sharing our pregnancy in this way were The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby -- 2nd edition (which also follows a week-by-week format); The Pregnancy Journal (which has info about your baby's development on a day-by-day basis); From Conception to Birth (which shows amazing photos about fetal development); and A Child is Born (another great guide to fetal development). We each also had our own favorite pregnancy books. My husband really enjoyed The Expectant Father and She's Having Baby while I really enjoyed The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and The Girlfriend's Guide. As you can see, books were a major budget item for us while I was pregnant, but we were lucky enough to have friends pass on some of these books second hand and I picked up some second hand books online, too. We had to purchase a few of the newer books (like The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby -- 2nd edition) brand new, however. Still, it was definitely worth it because knowing what was going on with our baby and my body really increased our enjoyment of pregnancy and helped us to feel more prepared for pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.

Summary: Beats the Rest!
Review: I am pregnant with my first baby and I received this book from a friend. I also recieved 5 other books, but this is the book I read the most. I love the pictures of how the baby is growing. It is a nerve wracking thing when you haven't heard a heart beat, had an US or felt it move, but to know how it might be developing makes it all a little more real. I like the coverage of possible tests you might have to take, as well as the ones you will have for sure.
Not everything can be classified into a particular week, but I felt that the other books that broke it down into a month or whole trimester! made it all too broad. I would read the same paragraph week after week and still be left needing knowledge. This format makes it a something new every week.
I will give this book to my next friend who finds herself pregnant! I think it should come with every positive pregnancy test!!!
