Rating: Summary: Thank You Ann Douglas!! Review: Your book was my pregnancy "bible" for a whole nine months. It is now in my neighbours hands as she goes through her pregnancy, and she loves it too! Giving her a copy of your book is one of the best gifts I have ever given to anyone. Just found out my sister in law is pregnant and I'm planning on buying her a brand new copy!
Rating: Summary: Fun, frank, and anything but judgemental Review: I have to question whether the earlier reviewer who described this book as hard to read and judgemental even bothered to open the cover. Ann Douglas is as unbiased and objective as pregnancy book authors get and her stuff is also a lot of fun to read. If you read the excerpts, you'll see for yourself that the other reviewer's comments were way off the mark.
Rating: Summary: you're not my mother OR my baby's! Review: I received this book as a gift shortly after I found out I was pregnant. I didn't touch it for the first couple of months, as I found the sheer volume of the book a little daunting and was looking for information that was a little easier to wade through. However, once I did start reading through it, I was furious. On multiple occasions, I tried to give the book another chance and read different sections instead, but always wound up agitated and angry. I found this book to be highly judgemental of anyone who wants to do childbirth, childrearing or even "planning" a pregnancy differently than the author feels appropriate. Additionally, it's great to have a wealth of information, but when you've got so much that you've got to wade through 40 pages to look for the answer to one simple question, I think you're out of the realm of a book for the public, and getting closer to a medical text. Beyond that, I think authors of pregnancy books should own up and take some responsibility to deliver facts and knowledge without trying to forcefeed their own opinions about the topic to the reader. I realize that many women love this book, but if you're anything like me, skip it and pick up something by Dr. Spock and Vicki Iovine instead.
Rating: Summary: Storks-R-Us...We deliver! Review: I am not a natural when it comes to babies. Until recently I happily thought babies where still delivered by Storks-R-Us. When my husband seriously started talking babies I seriously started looking for some help. I found it in this book. It was perfect for me. The information is serious yet written in a fun and easy to read way that didn't scare me off when I found out where babies really come from! After reading this twice and 'The Mother of All Babies Books' I gave my husband my birth control pills last night. Hopefully we will be delivering soon, too!
Rating: Summary: It is the Mother of All Pregnancy Books!!! Review: I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! My husband and I decided it is time to start trying to conceive our first baby and I bought several books about pregnancy and fertility. By far, this book is my favorite. If you are thinking about buying one book, this is the one. It is the ultimate guide to conception, birth "and everything in between". The language the author used is our everyday one, it is funny, in the same way my girlfriends would talk to me. I am reading and laughing at the same time . One of my favorite features is the "Mom's the Word", where real moms post their comments about the subjects. It is like bringing medical terms to real life. I love it. I recommend this book to all Moms-to-be, from the ones that are just trying to conceive like me to those who are already expecting their little angel.
Rating: Summary: Handy reference Review: This is an excellent resource which answers the many questions you have. Since it is based on interviews with real woman the questions are about the real things that we worry about. Very user-friendly, fascinating facts, and easy to read. Great to flip through to find out the things you didn't even know you had questions about! I'd also recommend The No-Cry Sleep Solution: Gentle Ways to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night - it addresses the number one issue you'll face during those early months and contains an excellent chapter on newborns.
Rating: Summary: a must have! Review: This is my first pregnancy and I have endless questions. Is this pain ok? When will the nausea end? What is a Triple-screen test? This is the most complete pregnancy book I have (and believe me have have many of them). It answers all of your questions and then some! FABULOUS!!!
Rating: Summary: Another brilliant and comprehensive book Review: Few writers are as comprehensive and thorough as Ann Douglas, while at the same time maintaining an aura of friendliness and caring. Reading her book is like obtaining advice from a trusted expert who you can really relate to. I strongly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Wish I was still having babies... Review: I recently bought a copy of this book for a pregnant friend and was astounded and delighted to see how pregnancy books have improved since my own pregnancy in 1990. I love the tone of this book - funny, informative and really user-friendly. I would certainly not condemn it on the basis of the one small error M. Carver found - Douglas does have a medical co-author, and it obviously slipped by him. I have another friend who's pregnant, and she'll be getting a copy of this book from me instead of her umpteenth terrycloth sleeper. This is a wonderful book. Too bad my own baby-making days are over!
Rating: Summary: Glaring Error Review: For all the experts enlisted for technical review and such, shame on Ann Douglas for not catching an obvious error on pps 86-87: the cervix is NOT high during the beginning of the menstrual cycle. Incorrect information is bad but to place it in context of pregnancy achievement is blatently irresponsible. After catching this error, the book left a bad taste in my mouth. There are much better books on pregnancy than this one...
