Summary: A must for tired parents!
Review: I can't say enough good things about this book. It gives parents a concrete plan for babies at different ages. Within two weeks, my daughter started sleeping from 6:30 pm until 8:30 am at night PLUS three hours of naps per day after I implemented ideas from this book. We were the envy of our friends and thought to be very "lucky", but we worked hard to stay on the plan outlined in the book. I gave the book to several friends who had similar success. Some basic points which I found most helpful:

1. Very young babies should never be awake longer than two hours at a time. When your baby wakes up, note the time. Then be sure to put the baby down about 90 minutes later. This worked like a charm and helped me organize and plan my day when my daughter was very young.

2. Sleep begets sleep! This is the most important lesson in the book. The theory is that when a baby is waking during the night or early in the morning, it indicates the baby needs MORE sleep, not less. My sister's daughter was waking up around 5:30 am. She kept trying to move her bedtime later and later, but the wake up time stayed the same. She was just too scared to try the suggestion in the book to put her daughter down earlier. She was sure she'd wake up at 3:00 am. When she finally did try, to her amazement, it worked. She has gradually moved bedtime to 7:00 pm (it had been 9pm) and her daughter now sleeps until about 6:45.

My daughter is now two years old and sleeps from 7:00 pm until 7:45 am. She also takes a nap from 12:30 pm until 3:00 pm. Although I know I am just one anecdotal example, I really do credit the ideas in this book with her amazing sleep habits. For tired parents, it is certainly worth a try!

I do have to add some things I did not like about this book...I think the suggestions on how long to let baby cry were too long. I simply skimmed over these suggestions. I may be a weakling, but I never, ever let my daughter "cry it out". I truly think that a discriminating reader can easily tailor this program to fit ANY style of parenting, from Ferber to Sears. (I myself lie somewhere in the middle...) Also, this book was not organized well, although I have an older version, and this one seems to have been updated. But I have to say that the information in the book is so good that it is worth the minor hunt to get to it! Good luck whatever you try!

Summary: This book saved our lives!
Review: I know a lot of people who think the "crying it out" method is harsh and heartless, and I was one of them! My oldest didn't sleep thru the night until she was one and never took a nap in her own bed. I had to rock her to sleep every night and for many months had to lie down with her at night and literally sneak out of her room after she'd dozed off. However, I tried this open-ended, but very scheduled method of sleep training when my youngest was 7 months, and it worked in a very short period of time. I know a lot of the sleep pattern stuff is common sense, but it also gives you exact times and strategies for naps as well as putting down to sleep. I never in a million years would have believed that a baby of mine would lie down fully awake and be happy to calm herself to sleep both for naps and at bedtime. She is a very happy 22 mo. old now who still takes a 2-3 hr. nap during the day and goes to bed at 7 p.m. and sleeps until 7 a.m. I'm not kidding! I think anyone who is having serious sleep deprivation should try this book for a week or two to see the results. I am a much more loving, caring, and giving mother when I get enough sleep. So chuck all those opinions that it's too harsh, and just try. I know my little girl is happy I did!

Summary: Finally...sleep
Review: I was getting up 6 to 8 times a night and had an over the top baby all day. This book helped me identify the problem, bad sleep habits. It was time to become a parent and solve the problem for my tired baby. This book showed us how to do that in only 3 nights and now she sleep 12 hours a night (9 months old) and is sooooo happy during the day.

Summary: Weissbluth's approach is calloused and barbaric
Review: I read this, every word. I couldn't believe some of the things Weissbluth was suggesting. At one point, he advocated leaving a baby alone after he had vomited: Don't clean him up, just leave him be. Basically he said leave your child alone to scream as long as it takes. It makes me sick just thinking about it. I would have given this less than a one star rating, but it isn't possible.

Summary: good sleep book
Review: i've read this book as well as elizabeth pantley's no crying sleep solution and baby whisperer and jodi mindell's sleeping through the night. have not read william sear's or babywise or ferber book yet, but i must say that this book is well organized to give background for someone to understand sleep psychology of babies and then ideas to prevent sleep problems for certain age groups and also addresses naps vs. nighttime sleeping. if you are a parent who can't deal with babies crying, the better solution is using elizabeth pantley's book, which i think can take a much longer time to get anything accomplished. i would still read this book for background info in conjuntion with pantley's.
i think it's best if this book was read prior to baby born and sleep prevention ideas done before the problems start. of course, for those difficult sleepers, i don't think it would be easy to implement any plan unless the parents feel comfortable with whatever philosophy they have about sleep training.

Summary: Sleep, wonderful sleep!
Review: When we moved to a new city, my 5 months old stopped sleeping well and began waking many times during the night. After 2 months, we were all tired and grumpy. The first night my child slept 9 1/2 hours. He woke up and fussed a little a couple of times, but easily put himself back to sleep. He is sleeping better than ever. I wish I had this book before he was born.

Summary: The only sleep book you need
Review: I love this book. I buy it for everyone I know who is having a baby, or is having baby or child sleep problems already. I've read many others, many good, but this one is better. Read it now and help your child develop the good sleep habits that will serve them their whole life.

Summary: Best Book I've Found...
Review: I have read several books on getting your child to sleep better, and this one is the best by far. Dr. Weissbluth has done his research, and he explains how sleep patterns emerge and develop in babies. If you follow his advice closely, and are willing to tolerate a few tears along the way, you will have a well-rested baby. My baby is 4 months old and accustomed to falling asleep while nursing. I've started putting him down according to his natural sleep rhythms (as suggested in the book), and I'll be darned if that little guy is not falling asleep all by himself for his naps now! We're going to start working on getting him to sleep longer at night now. I wish I could thank the author in person.

I do have to say that I wish there was more advice in the book for children at 2 years of age. My toddler (who was never "sleep-trained") fights his naps and bedtime like crazy, and there really isn't anything in the book to help me out with him. It suggests that I march him back to bed without much attention, but even the act of returning him to his bed is FUNNY to him. SO, I think this book would be the most useful for babies younger than 2 years old.

Summary: Best Sleep Book on the Market -- Honestly!
Review: Obviously the majority of the people who have reviewed this book think it's wonderful and have very eloquently explained its strengths--especially the fact that's research based as opposed to some opinionated expert's "opinion".

Instead of repeating all these excellent reviews, I will instead try to offer a warning to parents who are scared of buying this book because they think it's "unrealistic" or "cruel" because it allegedly sanctions crying.

For some reason sleep has become this wacky controversial issue in our modern society. The reality is that kids who are well rested are wonderful to be around, do well in school and are content. Sadly, many parents have convinced themselves that their kids don't need sleep, have a lot of energy, are better off spending time with mom and dad, should be shuttled to parents activities instead of being at home napping etc. etc.

Now that cutting edge academic research on ADHD is heading towards the conclusion that sleep deprivation is a cause and an exacerbator of the condition, parents may be more receptive to getting serious about this issue.

This book enabled me to train my child to sleep 12 hours at night and two naps during the day. (my child is a year old.) It's almost uncanny how accurate the recommendations are. It has gotten me through sicknesses, international travel, teething etc. And if the critics had actually READ the ENTIRE book they would learn that excessive crying is actually a sign that you are not following the technique correctly.

The one downside to the book is that it requires you to put your child's needs above your own--you cannot go out when your heart desires. You MUST respect nap time and you must be disciplined about putting your child on the schedule. And yes, for parents, that's a huge pain. Perhaps some parents just can't make the sacrifice?

Summary: It works!
Review: As agonizing as was the thought of letting my daughter cry _at all_, my 3-month-old was crying so much anyway that I figured we would try it. We began following the suggestions on a Friday night and by Monday night, we were all sleeping through the night! Helping her to calm down and fall asleep the first night was hard because she was just so exhausted, but, as the author says, sleep begets sleep. Now six months old, my daughter takes one long (3 hours) nap and two shorter ones and sleeps 12 hours at night! Thank you Weissbluth!
