Rating: Summary: Wonderful for the first 3 months, but then the magic ends... Review: Dr. Karp's book is extraordinary for dealing with newbornes and his advice is sound and such a relief for parents of a new baby. We followed his advice completely, and our baby never cried more than 5 minutes EVER. The problem is that he is now 3 months old and we still have to use Dr. Karp's methods to get him to sleep. We still have to swaddle him or else he won't sleep. The reason I did not give this book 5 stars is b/c Dr. Karp does not tell the reader how to ween their baby off his 5 Ss. He simply says they won't need them, but it is not true in our case. I am now disappointed b/c I think we will need to teach our son how to sleep unswaddled. Bottom line, it is a great book for the first 3 months, but remember the honeymoon is over after 3 months and you will eventually have to deal with unswaddling your baby.
Rating: Summary: Nothing short of miraculous Review: We've only seen the video, actually, which I've heard from other parents is even better, because you can actually see Dr. Karp apply his techniques, and SEE the babies relax . . . instantly. Halelujah!! I watched the video once, and was able to calm my newborn baby within hours of her birth. She's only 4 days old now; we've had enough sleep to remain human, and I can credit many of those hours to these 5 S's.Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Rating: Summary: Awesome book Review: Unlike other reviewers, we didn't wait till our baby was difficult till we bought the book, we got it before birth. Either we have the easiest baby on earth, or this stuff really works. When they handed the baby to me after he delivered, he was screaming his head off. I swung and shushed him, and him immediately quieted down. Using the techniques in this book, if our baby isn't hungry, some combination of the 5 s's always calm him. Only occasionally, when he is out of control does it take all 5, but it always works. Our baby has NEVER cried for more than a few minutes, thanks to this book. We shared the book with our pediatrician, who hadn't heard of it, and he totally endorsed the techniques. If you are expecting a baby, you would be crazy not to buy this book!!!!
Rating: Summary: Ahh Sweet Dreams!!! Review: I have a 2 month old son and with Dr. Karp's recommendations (the 5 S's are a miracle) we can all get a good night's rest. I have given this book as a gift to many new (and not-so-new) parents because I have found the information invaluable. Dr. Karp's "fourth trimester" theory makes a lot of sense and he supports the case with excellent examples from research and anecdotes from around the world. The techniques and information I learned have given me the confidence to handle my son's crying since day one. I highly suggest parents read this book and try the 5 S's for themselves -- it could mean the difference between a night of sweet dreams or many abrupt awakenings.
Rating: Summary: A must have for new mommies Review: The techniques described in this book really do work! I would have never believed it! Try the video too, to see how the techniques are applied (PROPERLY). You too can get your baby to sleep at night.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: We purchased this book after trying everything we could think of to get our 4 week old daughter to sleep through the night as well as take naps. We do not believe in the cry it out method, but became so desperate thet we even tried that one night and all three of us ended up crying. The 5 "S's" that Dr. Karp speaks of worked instantly with her when it came to crying and also helped with her sleeping. Our daughter now sleeps through the night and barely ever cries. This book was so helpful that I gave it to my girlfriend whose little boy has colick and it quieted him down within 2 days. I plan on giving this book as baby shower presents because I only wish I had read it before the baby was born.
Rating: Summary: THE HAPPIEST BABY IN TEXAS! Review: Despite being an educated woman and an experienced aunt, I really knew nothing about caring for a newborn when I became a new mom at age 40! Dr. Karp's amusing and interesting lessons helped me feel confident handling and caring for my baby right away. The result is my son IS the happiest baby on the block! My family and friends were amazed when the 5 S's were put into action and calm ensued immediately. They worked EVERY time. I absolutely recommend Dr. Karp's book to new/old moms, caregivers, medical personnel and even folks considering having kids! I feel like Dr. Karp is one of my best friends!
Rating: Summary: Worth a paper, not a paperback. Review: My wife urged me to put down STUPID WHITE MEN to read this even though we're starting the adventure of son number three. I read through piles of doting hyperbole until Karp told all, on pages 126-127. Swaddling, (laying baby on) Stomach, Sh-ing, Swinging, and Sucking (a pacifier) -- none news -- is worth a paper, not a $15 paperback. Back to STUPID WHITE MEN, the book of substance.
Rating: Summary: Works Like a Charm! Review: My little angel is 5 weeks old, and wakes every three hours to eat, sometimes refusing to go back to sleep. She is not particularly fussy or colicy, but sometimes wants to stay up all night! I had this book on my wish list, and a friend bought it for me ... I got it in the mail yesterday, and applied it last night ... my little girl went down at 9:30 and slept until 3:00 am, back down without complaint until 6:30 am!! She woke up happy and well rested and has been an angel all day!!! Dr. Karp's information is not new or revolutionary, but the way he puts it all together is great, and very user friendly!
Rating: Summary: Simply Amazing! Review: This book is fabulous...what seems so simple and obvious, the five s's are often forgotten by busy or flustered parents in the presence of a crying baby. This book simplifies and emphasizes the most basic skills necessary to calm a crying baby and help it sleep through the night (or anytime). I read this book in the last few weeks before my son was born, he is now 7.5 weeks old and I've been practicing these techniques since the moment he was born. He's been an absolute dream from the very beginning...sleeping through the night from the first week we brought him home. These techniques work!!! You can use them all together, or one, two or three at a time. This book is fabulous!!! It should be required reading for all new parents.
