Rating: Summary: Understanding the child and help for the parent Review: This book really helped me comprehend my daughter's sensory problems. She was diagnosed at 12 months old and she is currently 21 months old. Even though this book is geared toward 3 to 9 year olds, the disorder and the treatment are very applicable to all ages. My 20 year old sister also has this disorder and I found ways to learn to deal with her difficulties. After reading this book, I see both my daughter and my sister is a new light.
Rating: Summary: An important book for the early childhood special educator Review: This is an excellent book for the early childhood special educator. It describes in detail the nature of sensory processesing disorders, as well as providing ample strategies for working with various populations of children whose disorders have elements of different sensory dysfunctions. It also contains screenings for parents and teachers to see if their child "fits" the criteria. I highly recommend this book for teachers of young children.
Rating: Summary: My fears have been replaced with hope. Review: When your child has been diagnosed with a disorder, it can be very confusing and frightening. After reading "The Out-Of-Sync Child", my fears have been replaced by hope. It is the first piece of literature on Hayden's disorder that I understand, and understanding is the first step in getting him more in-sync with his environment.
Rating: Summary: I'm now empowered with the knowledge to meet my son's needs. Review: Thank God I was told about this book! Odd how the SI dysfunction diagnosis is about sensations that are not "pulled together" to get the clear picture. This book PULLED TOGETHER seemingly disconnected behaviors that my son exhibited, and gave me a CLEAR PICTURE of his diagnosis, his needs. What a relief! My son is 5 years old, born in Russia, and came to America at the age of 3. While he seems to be exceptionally smart (academically he is spelling a multitude of 3 letter words), he has been extremely hyperactive, fidgety, thumb (and now clothes) sucking, speech delayed, & sound sensitive. I am grateful for the depth and organization of the material presented in this book. It empowers me as a parent to step forward to access the services my son needs.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book about SI Dysfunction Review: I am a parent who has been grappling with my son's developmental delays. This book has provided many insights on how I can get help for my son. I would recommend this book highly to parents and Occupational Therapists. The only drawback in the book is that the authors do not provide age-appropriate activities. Instead, they present them all together.
Rating: Summary: Provides wonderful insight into your SID child Review: When I read this book, I saw my son in a new light. I was told he had SID, but did not appreciate the impact of SID on his life until I read this book. I found it extremely helpful in discussing my son with his teacher and OT.
Rating: Summary: This book is outstanding! Review: Though the subject of this book is complex and difficult to comprehend in many ways, The Out of Sync Child is a pleasure to read. Ms. Kranowitz has done an outstanding job explaining the key issues with SI dysfunction. Her examples are right on target; they make you feel as if she is writing about your own child. She also offers many suggestions of what we can do to positively deal with sensory integration dysfunction. This is an excellent resource for parents, teachers, and therapists. It is the best book I've found on this subject.
Rating: Summary: Pleased at response Review: As the editor of THE OUT OF SYNC CHILD I am very pleased that so many people have found the book to be informative, and most important, helpful.
Rating: Summary: An excellent guide to understanding the o;ut of synch child Review: I thought I understood sensory integration disfunction before I read this book, I was wrong. This book explained so much about my child's behavior and what he experiences by having SID, that I'm looking at him in a new light. It offers real life examples of how these children behave that I could identify with. It also offers simple suggestions for activities to help the child which I can easily do and I've found they work! It's the best written help I've gotten since learning my child has special needs.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful resource for parents, teachers and OTs! Review: This book is a wonderfully written reference for parents, teachers and Occupational Therapists alike. My son was just recently evaluated and diagnosed with S.I. disorder. I am a teacher and had never heard of S.I. until my pediatrician recommended I read this book when I went to her with concerns about my (almost) 3 year old. This book has been an invaluable tool in allowing me to recognize the signs of S.I. Disorder in my son and having him evaluated. It's a must have for schools, Occupational therapists, and any parent who has concerns about their child's development! I highly recommend it!
