Summary: Great, another "disorder"
Review: So my kid doesn't fit in. So he likes to fingerpaint off the paper. So he likes to hug people. I'm sorry this doesn't fit into the author's narrow view of normal, but that's just too bad. People come in all shapes an sizes. Just because my child is in one part of the spectrum instead of the other doesn't mean he has a disorder. "Experts" these days are way too eager to pigeonhole children as having something wrong with them when they are just normal active children.

Summary: Great introduction to a complex subject
Review: The subtitle, "Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Integration Dysfunction," is misleading: it assumes the average reader goes in understanding that Sensory Integration Dysfunction is the diagnosis, not a description. There are multiple, complicated, neurodevelopmentally-based dysfunctions related to how a child integrates all the sensory data received and processed. To grasp that range, I recommend another book after a reader finishes this one. "The Churkendoose Anthology: True Stories of Triumph over Neurodevelopmental Dysfunction."

Summary: an excellent reference with great information
Review: I was told that my child may have SI issues by his preschool teacher. I had no idea what that meant and what to do. I bought this book and it gave me so much information (it maybe a bit overwhelming and take a second read), but so useful. The book is densely packed with information with a great deal of detail, yet well organized for use as a reference. It is very well written for the lay audience as it doesn't throw a lot of big words at you without explanation. I find it is a book I read and reread as I learn more about my son's issues. I also highly recommend SI therapy as it has done wonders for my son behaviorally.

Summary: A GOD SEND
Review: I have 3 children that have SI, each one differant. This book is wonderful, and VERY informative.. In response to the..."I'm dysfunctional, your dysfunctional" SI is a very real issue, and yes every one has soem type of sensory issues, but most of us can deal appropriatly with it.. These kids cant! This is a wonderful book for EVERYONE involved with a child that has SI.

Summary: I'm Dysfunctional, You're Disfunctional
Review: I'm sure that there are children with such extreme examples of this "disorder" that education, therapy, etc. are terrifically valuable things.

But a reading of this book suggests that instead of treating disorders, the authors have simply helped invent a new one. Does your kids love water? He's got SID! Does he hate water? Then he's got SID! Other indications that your child may be suffering: "He may feel seesick in cars or elevators...he may crave fast and spinning movement, such as swinging, rocking, twirling and riding merry-go-rounds...he may enjoy getting into upside-down positions and be a daredevil...he may be anxious when tipped off balance..."

I could go on. But my point is that EVERY TODDLER IN THE WORLD would exhibit enough symptoms to be diagnosed with SID in a heartbeat. This approach so invalidates the "disorder" that the kids out there who are truly suffering could become marginalized by what seems like over-eager pop psychology.

Summary: We've modified our ADD evaluations in our practice.
Review: I first read this book while searching for an explanation for my own child's problems. Now I am adapting it's message to my own practice.
In our busy family practice we take care of many young children with ADD. The usual evaluation strategies reccomended by the authorities for ADD, do not address SI. Many children diagnosed with ADD actually are suffering with SI.
This book was instrumental in our ability to come up with a screening strategy.

Summary: Finally a well written book on this subject!
Review: This book is very well written, taking the reader through a journey that is very informative. My younger child suffers from this dysfunction and I have had tremendous help with this book!

Summary: This book helps!
Review: This is an excellent book that has helped me to understand this disorder and support parents of children with it. I have time, so I studied the book, and review often. There are so many answers for parents to assure them that they are "good parents," and doing everything right. If the parent is calm and in control, this teaches the child they can also control their life. If you even suspect you know a child who has a difficult time integrating their sensory perceptions, get this book and read it.

Summary: What a gem of a book...
Review: I found this book by accident..stumbled upon it at a thrift store (sorry Amazon!) but I am so grateful I did!
My son, by the age of 1, was hitting, screaming, kicking, punching, biting, etc. on a daily basis. The vacuum would send him hiding under the table, screaming. A slight touch to his head would make him come at you with fist flailing. I was at a loss as to how to help him or reach him...Shopping was a nightmare because a store environment would make him loss control completely.
When I read this book, I felt like somebody was explaining to me in very straightforward language what was going on with my son. And better than that, I was being offered 30+ pages of concrete, practical, do-able ideas for how to help him.
Implementing the suggestions in the book plus some independent reseach and the addition of a vitamen supplement formulated for ADHD kids turned my son's behavior around.
He is now (at 3) only rarely combative or self-abusive and even when he is, I now understand what is triggering it and how to stop it.
My son's sensory dysfunction is a result of mild autism but with or without other issues, this book addresses the sensory issues so well that it can be used as a parent primer and treatment guide freestanding or in companion with something autism-specific.
Wonderful book....this is a very worthwhile purchase, in my opinion.

Summary: This book helped turn our life around
Review: We had tried everything I knew about with our son. I am a teacher--nothing seemed to click. Then I heard about sensory integration dysfunction and ran out and bought this book. As soon as I started reading, I knew this was it. After a year in therapy, life has smoothed out 100%. I have bought many copies of the Out of Sync Child and also the video to share with other parents and with my child's school. Sensory Integration is fairly unknown and requires education on our part. This book will help you do it.
