Rating: Summary: I'm Glad I Found This Book Review: I hesitatingly picked up this book from the library shelf, opened the cover and read the first page...I was hooked. This is one of the best memoir books I have read. Who knew... Rosie O'Donnell is a wonderful writer! Interspersed with heartbreaking personal vignettes of Rosie's childhood is the relationship she begins with a "family" on the West Coast. Rosie's first contact with the teenager Stacie, begins when she notices her file amoung many from the New Jersey adoption agency she funds. Something about the case of the 14 year old rape victim who was now pregnant compelled Rosie to get involved. What unravels kept me reading late into the night. What awed me was the honesty that this book is written with, it's so honest you can feel the pain from her life experiences, come right off the page. Not many people have the courage to tell it like it really is, the good, the bad and the ugly but O'Donnell does. I think she has found a way to expunge her demons and you can't help but root for her because I think everyone can see a bit of themselves in her life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a quick read that I will be thinking about for a long time.
Rating: Summary: Unlike any other autobiography Review: I have been a fan of Rosie O'Donnell since before she became a household name thanks to her wonderful TV show. I finally got around to reading her autobiography, and I really couldn't get enough of it. I found it absurd and wonderful that I could relate so much to this ridiculously famous person. When was the last time you felt that while reading an autobiography? She is so honest in this book it is astounding. At one part, she says that it is so embarassing what she is writing, that she has to keep herself from deleting it. Only about 1/3 of "Find Me" is actually an autobiography in the general sense of the word. Part of me wanted more of the tidbits usually enclosed in an autobiography, but I realized at the end I had learned so much about this fascinating woman that I knew enough. A quick read, for sure, but I suspect parts of this one will stay with me much longer.
Rating: Summary: Deep as the Ocean Review: This book is one of the best books on how a person responds to their life circumstances. Rosie is an obvious survivor. It appears that Rosie suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This disorder is characterized by a continual revisiting of the feelings caused by the traumatic event or events. (Sometimes it could be the length of the stress and not just one traumatic event) PTSD sufferers relive their feelings by seeking out people (even movies, books and songs) that bring back those feelings. "Others who are just like we" As the feelings continue, they become out of proportion to the trauma and I could see how Rosie's feelings allowed her relate to traumas that this girl with MPD was experiencing and had experienced. This book has nothing to do with MPD-but it does give depth to Rosie's deep feelings. But Rosie has enough of a head on her shoulders to know that this girl is not her - as should we. Traumas happen to all kinds of people (but I bet more of them are in Hollywood) The traumas that made Rosie become Rosie- they are in the book- just connect the dots.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: I found this book to be wonderful. It let me see past the glamour of this tv star and see the real her. I love this woman because she is honest, does what feels right, and she's not a hypocrite. She actually helps people. It takes a lot of courage to go out and help people that need help. The book is a short read and yes, the grammar is not the best but you can understand it and it feels like Rosie is having a conversation with you. I would recommend it to any adult who loves Rosie.
Rating: Summary: Disturbing & boring at the same time! Review: This was a quick read - mainly because it was so bizarre that I ended up skipping some passages, especially the e-mail excerpts. Rosie must obviously be an intelligent woman and it was sad to see she is so starved for love and attention and an overwhelming desire to help someone that she fell for the women's story. She must be surrounded by capable people, and I feel one of them should have taken the initiative to investigate the woman's story. It would have saved a lot of time and emotional pain.
Rating: Summary: Psychologically Disturbing... Review: I almost ordered this novel from Amazon, but decided to check it out of the library first. Am I ever glad I waited! Although I had heard that it was written very differently from what was expected, I did not realize it was in fact NOT written. Being an English teacher, I found myself concentrating on the fragmented, incoherently written "chapters", if you want to call them that. I was disturbed by the writing style, albeit much better than the content of this book. It is the story of the fascination, obsession, and strange tendencies of a woman who I had a tremendous amount of respect for prior to reading this. Everyone has SOMETHING in their lives that impacts them tremendously, but not everyone has to tell about it to the entire world in hopes of feeling better. Rather than making me respect and admire her, Rosie makes me wonder if maybe it is HER who has the psychological "issues". I don't mean to be cruel, but this had to be one of the most repulsive and disappointing reads I've ever encountered.
Rating: Summary: Wasn't sure of the point... Review: This was interesting book, but I have to agree with one of the reviewers ahead of me that I wasn't sure of the purpose of the book. I don't know exactly what I was expecting to read, but it wasn't what I found. Good none the less, but definetly a somewhat odd book. It showed Rosie in a very niave sort of light, and I'm not sure how to take it...Read this book, it's good...not great, but worth the time.
Rating: Summary: Just Read It... Review: I don't usually read auto-biographies, but I found "Find Me" interesting and an easy read. It wasn't a book I decided to keep on my shelf, but I did enjoy reading it all the same.
Rating: Summary: I really liked this book...I think that you will too.... Review: This book was wonderful. I have never read a book in one sitting until now. Rosie's heartfelt story filled me with every emotion I have. I thought about death, life, love, parenting, and all around life happiness. I think that Rosie took some issues in her life and dealt with them tactfully and candidly. I reallly appreciate that. Hopefully, you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Give it a try. You won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: A troubled star and a disappointing read Review: O'Donnell deserves respect for honesty and her well publicized charity, but this thin book is very disappointing. While she readily admits she "needs help", it becomes all too apparent that the gifted comedianne hasn't moved past her mother's unfortunate death and her father's emotional paralysis. As a result, she comes off as juvenile, stupid, and boring. Her long e-mail excerpts are also tedious and uninspired. Read it overnight if you must, but its not worth your time. Hopefully she's found TRUE counseling now that she's retired.
