And I don't mean the delivery. The hard part are the hours and hours of colic and exhaustion and wondering where your identity went. Now, six years after becoming a mother, I finally feel less alone in my baby years misery thanks to Andrea Buchanan's "Mother Shock." If you're having a baby, or even if you've passed the baby years, read this book. It'll make you feel much better about the range of emotions -- the "mother shock" -- of the first year of motherhood.

While I am thrilled to be a mom, there are definitely moments of panic, stress, and confusion that are hard to acknowledge. But "Mother Shock" does more than that acknowledge the dark side of motherhood -- it helped me realize that those feelings are normal, and even helped me laugh at them. I plan to give this book to every new mom I know!

A professional career woman who had her first child at 35 (after much difficulty) I was complaining that I wasn't loving being a mom, wondering if we'd made the right choice and feeling totally guilty about it. This book saved me. It is so well written. The author expressed exactly what I was feeling and made me feel better about the emotional state I was in at the time. The book is funny and insightful, and I've marked passages to read again and again. I will buy this for all new moms that I know.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Perfect for new moms Review: A wonderfully honest and funny book for new moms. Its short essay format works well for the limited reading time available to new parents. Just one chapter every now and then can brighten even the most collicky, sleep-deprived, poopy-diaper-ridden day.

Review: After you are done with all those other parenting books - the ones that tell you how to pick a stroller or play peek-a-boo with your baby or how to tell a hungry cry from a tired cry - sit down and enjoy this wonderful book. When you are having one of those moments - the "why didn't anyone tell me what this motherhood stuff was *really* like" moments - sit down and read a chapter of this book. I used to give the traditional books at baby showers. Dr. Sears. Dr. Spock. Not anymore. Now I give this book! It's a refreshing look at the real side of motherhood. The good, the bad, and the hilariously funny.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A wonderfully real guide to life on Planet Mom Review: Andrea Buchanan has written a wonderfully real guide to life on Planet Mom (that strange place we all end up inhabiting after the birth of a baby!) She's not afraid to speak frankly about the sometimes frightening emotions of new motherhood, nor does she fall into the all-too-common trap of sentimentalizing the early days of life with a new baby. I found Mother Shock to be a funny, honest, and refreshing account of new motherhood and have already started adding it to the lists of recommended readings in my own pregnancy and baby books.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The story of how motherhood changes you Review: Andrea Buchanan tells a beautifully crafted story of how motherhood changes us, tells the truth of our lives as new mothers. She captures the subtle twists of emotion, deep wells of ambivalence, and daily renewals of motherhood. I especially love the title--motherhood does take one by storm, with the overwhelming effort it requires and the crazy love it gives. Thank you for writing this book and for telling our stories of re-creating ourselves as mothers--our stories of creating motherhood for ourselves, just as we create childhood for our children!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A Perfect Gift Review: Andrea Buchanan's book, Mother Shock, is a must-read for every new mom. Buchanan proposes a novel theory about new motherhood--that it is akin to culture shock--and she argues that adjusting to becoming a mother is like learning to navigate a foreign culture. In brilliantly written, interesting essays, Buchanan tells the reader honestly about how she herself overcame mother shock. This is a down-to-earth book that will make you laugh and cry, and it is a perfect gift for anyone expecting a new baby. --Jennifer Margulis, editor of Toddler: Real-Life Stories of Those Fickle, Irrational, Urgent, Tiny People We Love.
