Rating: Summary: A Bit Deceptive Review: Iovine tries to pass herself of as "just one of the gals" when in actuality she is anything but. Think of it as a pregnancy guide written by a lesser-known Kathie Lee Gifford. Married to a rich music producer (who produced hit albums for the likes of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie Nicks), Iovine is a celebrity wife. She herself has a successful career as a columnist and boasts - though I don't know why - having posed for a Playboy centerfold. I don't even have a problem with her blatantly self-congratulating remarks about her tiny pre-pregnancy figure. (Shallow? Yes. Offensive to me? No.) She has supermodel friends, whom she mentions anonymously in the book, and her occasional offhand remarks about recreational drug use and infidelity make it clear to me that she is definitely living in a world far different from that of most women I know. She categorically stereotypes pregnant women as crazy and insecure, describing behavior that I have never seen anyone exhibit, including pregnant women. I myself am currently pregnant, and I confidently feel myself to be her equal or superior in beauty, education, and physical fitness. Wherein lies the insecurity? Her attitude toward the roles of husbands is dated and stereotypical, as well. This makes sense once you realize that her husband can pay to be only as involved as he cares to be and is at liberty to hire the things he doesn't really want to do. Also, she assumes that everyone has a fully-employed, supportive husband. Personally, I do, but many women do not. That being said, the book has some humorous moments and does give a bit more "dirt" on the real deal of pregnancy than some of the dry, clinical books. Iovine, however, wouldn't fit in my circle of girlfriends. I do wish in hindsight that I had simply borrowed it from the library. At $11 I think the book is overpriced.
Rating: Summary: A silly must have Review: If you are looking for a book to get answers to some serious questions, then this is not the best one for you. If you just want a good laugh knowing there are many of us that can relate to the good and not so good things about pregnancy, than you have GOT to read this!
Rating: Summary: GIRLFRIENDS GUIDE TO STUPIDITY Review: NUMBER ONE: SHE SAYS DONT EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY? SHE IS A BIGGER DITZ THEN I THOUGHT. NUMBER TWO: DONT READ THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE UNDER UPPER CLASS. THIS IS FOR CHANEL SUIT WEARING SNOBS! DONT READ THIS DUMB BOOK UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE INSULTED
Rating: Summary: SHALLOW NONSENSE Review: THIS IS THE OPITAMY OF DUMB. ITS NOT SOMETHING YOU SHOULD READ IF YOU WANT TO GET SERIOUS INFO. 0 STARS
Rating: Summary: WHAT THE HECK! Review: ALL I CAN SAY IS SHALLOW. HAVING A BABY IS NOT ABOUT A TEA PARTY WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS, ITS A MEDICAL THING, NOT A JOKE. WHAT A DISCRASE.
Rating: Summary: Terrible! Review: This book makes you dread pregnancy. The entire book takes a "half-empty" look at pregnancy. It is pessimistic and even nasty. The author has nothing good to say about pregnancy and harps on weight gain, veins, stretch marks, cellulite. She makes you beleive you will be hideous for the entire pregancy and for months afterwards. Also, the book is repetitive and poorly written.
Rating: Summary: 2 thumbs up! Review: I read this book from cover to cover - Vicki Iovine is so funny and she definitely tells you everything you want to know about pregnancy LIKE IT IS - which was especially important to me because I was the first of my group of friends to get pregnant and I was so nervous and scared, plus I didn't have anyone close I could talk to about what I was experiencing! Anyway, I felt this author totally understood what I was going through - especially considering she herself has been through 4 pregnancies! Not only does Vicki know what she's talking about, her humor adds another dimension to the book, as if you really are hearing advice from a "girlfriend"! If you're interested in something more serious then you should probably check out the "What to Expect" series. All in all, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading her others as well!
Rating: Summary: Actually 0 stars is more like it! Review: Three words, Don't Buy It! Can you say shallow? Vicki sure can, as she reeks of it. Anyone who believes that pregnant women must have low self esteem (because of the way they look), do not get or deserve the privilege of being pregnant. There are many other great books out there, do yourself a favor and keep looking as this is not one of them.
Rating: Summary: The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy Review: This was a great book! Great for a little comic relief sometimes.
Rating: Summary: Only if you have time - doesn't have the info you need Review: This is a tongue-in-cheek flush piece, not something full of information, as my wife and I had expected. She didn't consider it helpful.
