Summary: cute, fun book!
Review: I have to agree with other posters that this is a FUNNY book that provides a much more realistic view of what pregnancy and labor are REALLY like! I was very stressed out by my "what to expect" book, but the Girlfriend's Guide has allowed me to have much more of a sense of humor about everything. This book truly made me laugh out on more than one page.
True, her fashion tips are a little dated -- does ANYONE wear leggings anymore?? -- but the intent is still good. Overall, I loved this book.

Summary: FUNNY! And SO TRUE
Review: I can't believe what some people are writing about this book. Each time I start to become scared about my pregnancy or about giving birth, I pick this book up to make me smile. Thank you Vicki Iovine for helping me with the difficult times of my first pregnancy! I've recommended this book to all I know that are pregnant!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Just for fun
Review: The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy is politically incorrect at times, for sure. That's part of the fun. Vicki Iovine isn't afraid to spill her guts and talk about all the things that pregnant women tend to get a bit neurotic (dare I say crazy?) about while they are pregnant. A lot of pregnancy book authors dance around these issues. Only a handful of authors confront them head-on. I give Vicki a high-five for being one of the few who is willing to tell it like it is.

Summary: A relief to read!
Review: I read this book after reading "What to expect...", and found it to be a profound relief. Despite Iovine's laid back attitude to diet and exercise (actually, because of them!) I was so happy to hear her point of view. She reminds us that even though we may feel miserable, we don't have to lose our sense of humor about it. Hey, we are creating human beings here, and that can be tiring and stressful to the body, but it's great to think that I can laugh at that. I haven't laughed so hard at a book in a long time (especially at "What to expect", which made me feel terrified!).

Knowing that I am going to be fat (pregnant women are all fat, I don't care who you are, get used to the idea), reading in her humerous way all about being fat during pregnancy at least let me laugh at that fact instead of being depressed about it. Even through the humor, she does remind us that having a child is a rewarding, joyous experience. She also imparts facts about what to bring to the hospital, what to expect in labor, and various other subjects that I haven't seen in any other books (like to bring all your detestible maternity undies, because you will want to throw them out soon anyway, and lots of socks). Some of her ideas never even occurred to me, but will prove to be very useful. But beware: if you have no sense of humor, or are looking for strict medical facts, read something else, please, and don't complain about this book!

Summary: funny and informative
Review: I have loved this book since I started to read it. It's funny yet informative yet very realistic and candid. This book was recommended to me by my girlfriend and I have recommended it to others now as well. She does tend to write to women who are in committed relationships however you can apply this information to yourself whether that's the case or not. It answered alot of my questions and cracked me up several times... I even got my husband to read parts of it with me.

Summary: Informative, supportive, and funny
Review: After much encouragement from others that I needed to get this book, I finally got it when I was about 28 wks pregnant with my first child. I didn't think a book would help me; I'm a RN and I know what's going on with my body. I wish I had it the moment I found out I was pregnant. It is great. I would be reading it in bed at night and bust out laughing. My husband read parts of it and did the same. The best way to put it to paraphrase from the book; most other pamphlets or whatever info you read says things like "slightly tender", "some discomfort" and so forth. This book tells it like it really is in a humorous, truthful, and supportive way.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great info - just don't follow the fasion.
Review: This book has tons of information and it's an EASY read! My friends bought it for me as a gift and it's my favorite of my four pregnancy books. I'm not an avid reader, however I've only had it about 3 weeks and I'm about 75% through the book. Don't use it as your medical information - just good advice and info no one seems to tell you about.

The only reason I gave this book 4-stars is because even though it's only 10 years old, it is pretty dated. I wish the author had a revised edition with at least updated information about fashion and fitness.

Summary: disrespectful, assuming, and just dumb.
Review: my sister is pregnant (she's 18) and i thought about getting her a more hip, humorous book to help her through her pregnancy. after flipping through this and reading bits and pieces here and there, i was appauled and disgusted. not only does this book assume that if you are pregnant, than you are married (which calls into judgement pregnancy out of wedlock -- like my sister -- which is something that i think this book or its author(s) has no right to do, as well as marginalizing single girls who are artificially inseminated or lesbian couples who are artifically inseminated and therefore pregnant!). also, this takes a rather "women are subordinate" attitude about some of the symptoms/side effects of pregnancy: when the author speaks about your breasts getting bigger and more tender, she says "eventually they'll stop hurting and continue to get bigger, which means in a couple of months your husband will have a new set of playthings."

how can you not be disgusted by this?

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Not that great!
Review: I didn't find it funny or informative. The only useful thing was the checklist of what to buy for the baby. You can find that in many other books.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Highly Recommend
Review: I can't wait for someone else I know to get pregnant just to pass this book on. I think it is a must read for anyone who is pregnant .. and has even a slight sense of humor. Which if you're pregnant and don't .. wait a few months. I enjoyed reading this book more than some of the other recommended books for pregnant women. Having just recently gone through the nine months I would read it again, but I just ordered the guide to the first year. I anticipate that one to be equally enjoyable to read, while offering some valuable information.
