Summary: Yes, I laughed. But I was horrified at some attitudes...
Review:

Vicki Iovine's advice seems to be: get to the hospital, get the drugs and get the baby out. A holistic approach, this is not. If you are planning a home birth, steer clear. The 'foolish man' attitude to partners wore a bit thin after a while too.

Forget this book, and get Vicki Iovine's Diary instead. It's got all the funny bits (copied directly from the above book) to do with fashion and feelings, without all the dodgy healthcare advice.

Summary: Reminds me of something Erma Bombeck would have written!
Review: After reading so many serious books about what you should or shouldn't do/eat/feel etc., I was growing more and more paranoid about being pregnant. This book made me laugh out loud many times. For the first time I was relaxed and actually started enjoying my pregnancy! Thank you Vicky!

Summary: The Math Wizard Checks In
Review: I enjoyed this whole book, especially as a supplement to more serious pregnancy guides. My one small quibble is with Vicki's insistence that 40 weeks is 10 months, not 9. She's obviously assuming 4 weeks in a month. However, divide 52 weeks in a year by 12 months in a year and you'll find that the average month is 4.3333 weeks long. Divide 40 weeks of pregnancy by 4.3333 weeks in a month, and you get 9.23 months. Granted, it's not exactly 9, but it's closer to 9 than 10. Vicki never did the math or wondered why everyone would say 9 months if it were actually 10, so she has to write "nine (ten)" every time she mentions the months of pregnancy. Sometimes it's worth it to pay attention in math class. Otherwise, very entertaining and comforting read, like having coffee with your friends. I love how frank she is about the sorts of topics I couldn't bear to think about.

Summary: What a blast! Get your relief read here!
Review: I loved this book! This really is like a conversation with a girlfriend. Vicki lists all sorts of good details about what you'll feel like (stuff the dr. will likely never mention) &, like a girlfriend, she has strong opinions on a lot of issues & you'll just have to take them with a grain of salt & decide for yourself what you like. For instance, she's really into the planned c-section, apparently just for the tidiness & convenience of it. But this isn't a medical book, this is like being pregnant & getting access to someone you like who just went through it & being able to ask them, 'but what was it really like?' about every piddly detail. Favorite chapters would be maternity fashions (what exactly is that material in maternity 'jeans') & pregnancy insanity (force your spouse to read this chapter). Plus, thanks for telling women to call their Drs. when they need to & not feel guilty about it because that's why Drs. are there. This book is a welcome break from all those information-rich but dry & distant pregnancy books. I can't really find any guilt-inducing passages in it, to the contrary, the many references to midnight snacking really let you off the hook, diet wise. If you're like me, this is a time of lots of reading & research. You should really treat yourself to this great & funny book.

Summary: Rolling On The Floor Laughing Out Loud
Review: Vicki has been there, done that, got the T-shirt and is now using it for an Urp Cloth. This is my second pregnancy and it was still a great help. She's a great writer, funny and informed. She tells it like it IS! It's also a great read for expectant Dads, too. Gives him some insight as to "what's really going on in there!" She's not a doctor and never claims to be. However, she DOES tell you things that your OB/GYN doesn't and what to expect with the mind, body, and soul as it changes through your pregnancy. If you are expecting, plan on expecting, or know someone who is, this is an ABSOLUTE Must Have! Great advise on dealing with body changes, maternity clothes, talking with your doctor, what to buy for baby, etc. I'd bronze it, but that would only prevent me from being able to read it again and again and again.

Summary: This book made me laugh and cry, remembering my pregnancy.
Review: Reading "The Girlfriend's Guide..." was extremely bittersweet for me. I'm the mom of an 8 year old daughter, and I'm trying for my second child. The book made me laugh to the point of crying many times! Then other places made me sob, the memory still so clear to me of my daughter's birth.
