Rating: Summary: Hilarious, honest and light-hearted look at pregnancy. Review: The first time I was pregnant, I read all those scary pregnancy books that made you feel that you were a total failure as a mom-to-be if you ate a candy bar once a month, or skipped the yellow veggies that day, or , God forbid, gained more than 2.3 lbs in your 1st trimester.(I got plenty fat, and lost it all by the time my baby was 5 months old, in spite of the dire warnings). This time, I am at six weeks, feel great, and know I will survive even if I'm not perfect (which my daughter is, by the way). Vicki Iovine's book is hysterical, and true, and actually even makes my husband laugh out loud. It's not a medical book...it's a reality check. Anyone who has ever been pregnant will identify with her assessment of life while expecting. I highly recommend it to any woman with a sense of humor about herself. It's a scream, AND it will make you feel great about yourself, and laugh at the yucky parts of being pregnant which can otherwise be a little depressing and unpleasant.
Rating: Summary: An awesome book of the "goodies"(bits of info)of pregnancy. Review: Vicki's real pregnancy experiences provided her with a funny, down-to-earth capturing of the gritty tidbits of having a baby that all of us first time moms want to know. I looked for any clue that I was pregnant for the two weeks after conception/before missed period and I stood in the book store reading Vicki's entire chapter on how you know your pregnant before you take the pregnancy test. I was hooked, bought the book, and read it all in three days. For those moms who want to know the "Is my body really going to do this?" details of pregnancy, BUY THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Okay, but a few things bugged me. Review: This book is amusing, but as a first time mom, and scared to death, this book didn't really help me much. There are a few cute parts, but the overall negative attitudes towards 'natural childbirth' and her comments about the 'dismissive/apathetic' father really, really bugged me. My husband is not like that, in any way. After finishing this book, I realized I -did not- want to go through this experience alone. And this book didn't help reassure me. It's too bad, because there are some really cute parts in it, but I would not recommend it to new, young, Wiccan/Pagan, 'New Age' or Natural Childbirth focussed moms.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have ever read. Review: After having six children, and purchasing a new book with each, I must say that this was THE MOST HELPFUL AND REASSURING BOOK on pregnancy that I have ever read. I recommend it to all my "Girlfriends"
Rating: Summary: Forget this book! Review: This woman is trying to be funny but winds up looking ridculous. She even states that she knows enough about pregnancy to deliver your baby in the back of a taxi by cesarean or vaginally. I spent much of the time reading it wanting to vomit. Just goes to prove what I said earlier to my husband, "Don't trust a playboy bunny for pregnancy advice..."
Rating: Summary: WORTH EVERY STRETCH MARK Review: WHAT A GREAT RELIEF!! BEING A SECOND TIME EXPECTANT MOM, THIS WAS THE PERFECT BOOK. THE FIRST TIME AROUND, I DID THE SAME AS THE AUTHOR, READ EVERYTHING I COULD GET MY HANDS ON. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONLY BOOK I READ. WHAT A WONDERFULL WAY TO VIEW PREGNANCY, WITH MUCH NEEDED HUMOR. SO MANY OF US ARE SCARED, EMBARRASED AND SURE NO ONE ELSE HAS HAD OR IS HAVING THE SAME THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS AS OURSELVES. THIS GUIDE PUTS ASIDE THOSE THOUGHTS COMPLETELY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL EXPECTANT MOMS, BE IT THE FIRST OR TENTH BABY YOU HAVE HAD. THANK YOU VICKI FOR YOUR HONESTY. KELLY KORTIER
Rating: Summary: I LOVED THIS BOOK!! Review: During my pregnancy I read 2 pregnancy books and was terrified when it discussed all the things that can go wrong, the diets you have to follow, etc. This book was quick reading, it answered my questions and it was hilarious to read. Since then I recommend to all my friends to read this book.
Rating: Summary: Laughing Hysterically from Texas!!!!!!!!!! Review: This books is wonderful. It is not and never was intended to be a medical reference manual, but it is so funny you will actually laugh out loud - my husband thought I was nuts!!! Vicky gives straigtforward advice on everything from labor to constipation the way your best friends would "lay it on the line". Quite a refreshing change from all the other books that can sometimes frighten you. A must read for any expecting mommy. I plan to buy subsequent book "A Girlfriends Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood"!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Emphasizes the horrors of pregnancy. Review: While the author is very funny about many aspects of pregnancy, she portrays the pregnant woman as a helpless victim of the medical system.
Rating: Summary: This is for humor ONLY. Review: Ms. Iovine is, indeed, very funny, and I laughed out loud at many parts. Valuable as far as the little tidbits about what happens to your body (and your mind!) when pregnant; all those unexpected weirdnesses that you thought only happened to you. Good for empathy. But I'm actually quite insulted by her attitude towards women who don't plan to automatically hook themselves to an epidural and take every single word their obstetrician says as gospel. The tired old attitude of "You don't get any medals for giving birth naturally" pops up quite a bit, and she characterizes women who do so as unprepared losers who show up to the hospital with a few breathing exercises and an Enya tape. If Iovine really thinks this is what natural childbirth is all about, and thinks that "a medal" is the motivation for women who want it, then she's clearly not much of a "Girlfriend" after all. (But FUNNY!)
