Rating: Summary: WARNING: THIS BOOK IS FUNNY Review: This very refreshing book includes funny stories about pregnancy and really does explain some things your MD won't tell you. Ms Iovine is not a doctor, so don't go looking for medical advice and then be all offended that it's not comprehensive. There are plenty of other books written by doctors and nurses that can give you the skinny (pun intended) about pregnancy and long lists of things to worry about. ("What to Expect When You're Expecting" actually has a chapter entitled: WHEN Something Goes Wrong. How cheery!) If you think pregnancy is only a time for worry and tests you won't apprectiate the gift this book can be. Buy it and enjoy it for what it is--what pregnant woman couldn't use a laugh?
Rating: Summary: Humorous look at something most woman go through, however... Review: ...most women aren't a size 4 nor do they have friends with cutesy names like Corki. Also, if you have any issues with your weight (and what normal sized (size 10 and up) woman doesn't? Thank you, Cosmo :P) you may be offended when the author rambles on about how she got so FAT at a size 10! If you can get past that, though, the book is helpful and does tell you things you probably won't hear from your doctor unless you know to ask ;)
Rating: Summary: Down-to-earth, and FUNNY! Review: This book is a comfort to any pregnant woman. As a first time mom, I have read many medical and serious books about pregnancy, but this is by far my favorite. The author speaks to you honestly and humorously. She gives you the feeling that "yes, everybody goes through that."
Rating: Summary: NEGATIVE! Review: This book dwelled on all the negative things of pregnancy. I don't think the author enjoyed her experiences much at all and then wrote about all her negative feelings. Talk to your real girlfiends who are excited about your pregnacy!!!
Rating: Summary: Taking the heat out of being pregnant Review: I checked this book out at the library, the waiting list is incredible. This was my fourth baby, and I was ready for the way Vicky presented the low-down on pregnancy, birth and beyond. Her earthy descriptions were very close to reality - at least in my estimation. My husband and I laughed at the parts about stopping to go to the bathroom on road trips, and the joys of sonogams (all that water). However, breastfeeding is not presented in a very healthy light. It is spoken of as painful, tiring and unnecessary in this age of "better living through chemicals". I hope that women who really want to breastfeed will not be dissuaded by this stance. Another thing that I passed on was the advice to have an epidural for pain. I appreciate having my babies awake and alert right from the start. I bought the next book in the series, the Girlfriend's Guide to the First Year, and found that it had little to do with the new baby, but more about the baby's effect on the new mommy. Now, with my FIFTH preganacy hanging about my neck like a millstone (I am anticipating wearing my uterus on an ankle braclet), I need that humor more than ever. I sure wish I could figure out what causes pregnancy! (Just kidding.) A great book for the comic relief, just don't take it for a medical primer - 'cause it's not.
Rating: Summary: Funny and true-to-life Review: I read The Girlfriends' Guide while I was pregnant with my third child. I found many of Ms. Iovine's descriptions of pregnancy to be accurate and true-to-life. I really enjoyed being pregnant and Ms. Iovine at times gave the impression that she did not. But, I just took those comments with a grain of salt and laughed my way through the book. It was refreshing to read a book that has a real-life perspective on pregnancy rather than a bunch of medical terminology and impersonal observations. Another book that is similar in nature is We're Pregnant! which goes one step farther than Girlfriends' Guide by including a true-to-life perspective on pregnancy from both the mother-to-be and the father-to-be. Together, these two books will give you a true idea of what pregnancy is all about.
Rating: Summary: A welcome relief from the "clinical" pregnancy books Review: This was my favorite pregnancy book. I would read it in the evenings and would sometimes be laughing so hard that my eyes would tear. Here, finally, was a book that didn't tell me every terrible thing that could happen during my pregnancy. It didn't tell me that my child would be a failure if I didn't listen to Mozart or if I drank a cup of decaf coffee. Somehow, this book let me believe that everything would be OK, and it was.
Rating: Summary: A down-to-earth guide for first time moms Review: I recommend this book to all moms. It's written in a down-to-earth, right in your face kind of style. The real-life humor is great - even my husband enjoyed its content! Their top 10 lists really eased my mind!
Rating: Summary: 1st Time Mom was reassured by this book Review: I'm amazed at the lack of humor the people who rated this low have. I was relieved to read this book, that told me that not everything was as pastel and beautiful like in a tampon commercial. I think this book was valuable in not expecting women to live up to a ridiculous television peaches and cream standard, and not to expect your husbands to handle it like some understanding guy on a pregnancy test commercial. Vicki's attitude did not strike me as cynical, it struck me as realistic! Sorry to bust your bubble all you "beautiful pregnancy" girls, but throwing up in the morning, having sciatic nerve pressure, and worrying about the amnio (that I eventually refused) was NOT beautiful. Vicki made me feel OK to feel this way. I really got the idea that she loved pregnancy, but would have appreciated someone tell her what was really gonna happen. Plus, I read the "what to expect" books as well. You use both and glean your own perspective from both. Vicki's was the only perspective on the market that socked it to you real, instead of those new-age-music, "oh what a gentle wonderful time" -- and she could laugh at the same time. Same attitude I want to raise my kids with!
Rating: Summary: Confused Review: I'm a first time mom-to-be and after reading this book, I was partially relieved to read the things which I was able to relate to but on the other hand confused from her sarcastic and cynical remarks such as husband bashing and the terrifying delivery stories.(hemorroids!!!) She seems to know what she is talking about, yet, I do agree with other readers how she did not have very many good things to say about pregnancy. Granted I am not having the most comfortable pregnancy right now, but I feel that every pain and discomfort that I go through is well worth it for our precious one!!! I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to my other girlfriends because I ceartainly don't want to be accused as hating pregnancy, cycnical or snobbish.....
