Summary: Absolutely hilarious and honest
Review: I just picked this up again of the bookshelf where it sat since pregnancy #1 and I read cover to cover right there on the floor and laughed all over again.

Be forwarned though that those oversensitive and with no ability to laugh at themselves or pregnancy should not buy this book. This book is for those who want to have fun while pg and enjoy an honest opinion(even if they don't agree with it)

Comment on a review below: "However, breastfeeding is not presented in a very healthy light. It is spoken of as painful, tiring and unnecessary in this age of "better living through chemicals". I hope that women who really want to breastfeed will not be dissuaded by this stance" I think it's dishonest to say bfing is easy--for many women it isn't. It wasn't for me and it we didn not continue. For many women who did the early days were in fact tiring and painful so why not be honest for the good many who will feel this way? We could debate unnecassary in light of the fact that my daughter has done wonderfully in every aspect without the aid of bm and I certainly don't live in a chemical bottle like you said. Sounds like you have a stereotype and opinion of your own so what's so wrong with ole Vic having her opinion and sharing it with her "girlfriends"?

Summary: She's the girlfriend we all WISH we had...
Review: The one who will tell you the TRUTH - not to scare you, but because she loves you.

When pregnant for the first time I think I must have purchased $100+ worth of "guides". Vicki's was the only one worth having. When I underwent some scary preliminary prenatal test results and was hysterical for nearly 3 weeks, Vicki figuratively "held my hand" through it all. When the big serious tomes were scaring the heck out of me, Vicki's book related a similar instance she and friends had gone through and how RARELY the tests were indicative of anything. I literally HIGHLIGHTED those passages and read them numerous times per day until we got through the scare. Vicki will always have a place in my heart after that.

She was also the only one to give PRACTICAL advice about what I would really need in the hospital - forget the pretty nighties, remember to pack thick white socks and plenty of 'em - check! She told the truth about many things that even my mother had forgotten about or didn't want to mention. For months after my son's birth I really did say aloud "well I read about this in the Guide..." or "Well Vicki had warned me about that..." Some of my friends thought this must be some SERIOUS study guide I had undertaken reading!

It was so EASY to read it was fun. I was sorry to see it end. I now have two pregnancies under my belt so to speak and I still enjoy reading through her Guide. It's like revisiting old friends. Old "girlfriends" I suppose. This "Guide" goes into my children's "keepsake trunk" so someday I can tell them how Vicki got me through!

Summary: Buy this for all of your Pregnant Girlfriends
Review: I absolutely loved this book while I was pregnant & have reread it with each pregnancy. I also have bought it for everyone I know who is pregnant. It is the most straightforward book & tells you things doctors forget!

Summary: Smile If You're Pregnant
Review: Other pregnancy books can be very scary, by itemizing everything that can go wrong, for instance. Vicki Iovine also informs you, but like a girlfriend would, with the funny, cute sides of pregnancy. I've given this book to many first time Mothers to Be. It's always a hit.

Summary: This book is for the rest of us...
Review: The ones that don't think that pregnancy is like one of those douche commercials where everything is wonderful, fresh, and sunshine-y. Even those of us who are thrilled to *be* pregnant can appreciate the difficulties of the experience and laugh at the absurdities. I mean, you radically morph into this entirely different sized person who is raging with hormones. It sounds like the plot for a science fiction movie, doesn't it? You have to be able to laugh at that!

I buy this book for all my pregnant friends. It is not meant to be a medical guide. It is meant to be like a friend talking to you about her experience and some of her friends' experiences. Yes, you are going to disagree with some of it--hopefully you disagree with some of your friends' opinions. Otherwise, you need to hang out with a more diverse crowd of folks.

I did find her constant references to her tiny size a bit off-putting (I greatly surpass her size 4) and she is certainly operating in a different income bracket than I am, but the experience of pregnancy is universal and I related to so much of what she said. In addition, her book is the *only* one (and I read a lot) that accurately described the experience of pushing a baby out of your innards. I really think that helped when I delivered my baby, and it is something that other friends said they wished they had known.

If you don't have a sense of humor about yourself, then steer clear of this book. But for those of us who are in touch with ourselves enough to know that what we are experiencing, in addition to being magical and wonderful, is also hysterical--THIS IS THE BOOK FOR US.

Summary: Vicki Iovine needs to fire her editor!
Review: This book was a real disappointment. After reading the raving reviews I thought I had found a wonderfully helpful book on the"inside scoop of pregnancy". I am sorry to say that it did not come close to living up to my expectations. Not only is The Girlfriends' Guide poorly written, but there are mistakes riddled throughout the book such as taking an antihistimine for dry skin! I felt that this was a highly opinionated book that lacked in research and wit.

Summary: Vicki Iovine Tells is Like It Is - and You Need To Know!
Review: I bought and read this book while pregnant with my first and am still using it as a reference now that I am pregnant with my second. It is an invaluable guide to both moms and dads to getting through the pregnancy "panics" without making you feel like your the only insane woman ho would have some of these thoughts! I really felt like Vicki was the kind of mom that I was during pregnancy, and the kind of mom that I wanted to be afterward. This is the first thing I buy for all of my newly pregnant friends. It is also a great help for husbands to understand their wives during this crazy time.

Summary: funny for a few minutes, but this gets old
Review: I was expecting too much from this book. I wanted either a good laugh or some tangible, valuable information: I got very little of either. Everything I read, from stretch marks to fashion ideas, I had already read somewhere else or heard before from my own friends. The humor--albeit funny for a few pages--got old for me; lots of "pregnancy guarantees gas" and "you'll look fat with short hair" jokes. I thought her rationale for not exercising was ambitious though she left out the benefits of light exercise. I also know so many women who get their figures back in far less than nine months. Other than that, the material pretty much covers the obvious, and I sort of felt like I'd been duped. Like when we all bought pet rocks. What were we thinking?

Summary: Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy
Review: This book was hilarious! It was nice to feel understood during those awkward months of pregnancy when even your husband is alienated from you!

Summary: Humorous --- relax, everybody!
Review: I thought this book was great! How refreshing to hear that it's ok if you eat refined sugar a few times while you're pregnant! What a plus to know you're not the only one who feels fat and unattractive because you're bloated, etc!

A couple of things I disagree with other reviewers about:

1) Some reviewers felt that Vicki hated being pregnant. I didn't get that feeling at all. I just felt she was being realistic that pregnancy is sometimes very hard on your body. It probably won't be the nine months of your life when you feel the healthiest and most relaxed.

2) She never said not to exercise! Folks, if you actually read the whole book (unlike some people who read one or two paragraphs), you'll realize that she does recommend walking and things like water aerobics. What she doesn't recommend (and which she felt may have endangered two of her own pregnancies) is strenuous weight lifting. Based on what I've read, many ob's agree with that.

I feel that alot of the reviewers may be basing negative comments on a couple of paragraphs read in a bookstore (some even say as much), which isn't quite fair.

Overall, I thought it was a great book, and while I may not agree with her on every little point, Vicki has certainly provided me with alot of laughs and alot of starting points for discussions with my obstetrician, my husband, etc.
