Summary: Buying it again for another pregnant friend
Review: A friend of mine gave me this book when I was pregnant with my first child - and I must say - in the stack of maternity books that I had begun to surround myself with - I was skeptical that this one would live up to it's cover. However, within a day I had read the whole thing and put the rest back on the shelves. I agree that Vicky has a lifestyle that is different than mine in many ways, but it is her blatant, brutal, relevant, and laugh-out-loud honesty that really set this book apart. Not only is it a source of much needed humor, but I really did learn a lot about what to expect during pregnancy and birth. I have since lent out my original copy as well as buying several more for my pregnant girlfriends. You simply cannot underestimate the power of a good laugh when you're belly is hanging over your knees, and this book definately delivers.

Summary: Pregnancy with a smile
Review: This is hands-down, the funniest book I have ever read! I have read many books on pregnancy, but this one is the best on telling it like it is! Finally, Vicki and her girlfriends tell you from a "human" point of view on what to expect from pregnancy. If you're looking for medical advice you need to look somewhere else, but if you need a mental pick me up on your views of pregnancy, read this book immediately!

Summary: Lighten up about pregnancy!
Review: If you want medical facts, get "Pregnancy and Childbirth, your questions answered". This book is more just for fun. I will recommend this book to every pregnant woman I know from now on. I laughed outloud at one point. Vicki has such a refreshingly honest way of telling it like it is. For instance, here is a quote on how we pregnant women tend to get a bit... um... obsessed with this experience: "As unique and special as your pregnancy is, it can tend to lose its fascinating and compelling aspects to everyone but your mother and you about halfway through. And unfortunately, a pregnant woman's need for attention is about as deep as the Grand Canyon. I hate to be so blunt, but it is important for you to remember, YOU DID NOT INVENT PREGNANCY, AND EVENTUALLY YOU WILL HAVE TO RESORT TO PAYING PEOPLE TO REMAIN CAPTIVATED BY YOUR CONDITION. Your friends have their own lives that will occasionally distract them from your crucial project."

Summary: Perhaps this guide is for martians?
Review: I'm giving this book two stars because it is not absolutely worthless. It is - as many customer reviewers suggest - comical in some sections.

My problem was that I felt more and more distant from her as I read, rather than feeling closer, which is what I wanted and assumed would happen, and which is what I presume the author wants, considering how she seems to want to play the role of our "girlfriend".

I found a lot of her suggestions to be frivolous or unattainable for most of our "girlfriends" - whether they have the means to attain them or not! For example, she suggests to someone who thinks she might be pregnant to go out and purchase something like 10 home tests. Perhaps I am taking her too seriously and not picking up on the irony in that suggestion, because those tests cost more than $10 each! She continued, however, throughout the book to speak from the perspective of someone with tons of money to blow on whims (she opted to go for a totally different "look" for each of her pregnancies!) and a heavy reliance on conventions and stereotypes.

Her preoccupation with her weight is what really did it for me. She had made several non-specific references to how grossly fat she gets when she gets pregnant - how extremely *fat* she gets, and how she can't wear *any* of her clothes. At one point she explains in detail how she tends to hold on to a wide range of sizes so that she can accommodate her own bulk when she needs it. She made the mistake of specifying that this range spans size 2 to size 10... Size 10 is distressingly, depressingly, stay-out-of-a-leotard fat?

Now, I am newly pregnant for the first time. I live in a household with an income of over $100,000, the vast majority of which is brought in by my husband. I can easily fit into a size 10. What I'm getting at it that *I* don't think that *I* can relate to this whimsical stuff, and I am really wondering who can.

It's kind of cute, but it's not going to tell you anything serious that you can't or won't find in a proper reference book. All the non-serious stuff that it has to say could very well just make you feel like an awkward lummox. Or you just might find it trivial.

Summary: A lighthearted approach...
Review: This is a great book for all expectant moms. Doctor's don't prepare you for all the little things (mood swings, etc). I laughed out loud in parts, sometimes to the point of crying.

Summary: the girlfriends guide to pregnancy:or everything your doctor
Review: For those of you who want a lighthearted approach to your new found blessing to be! This is book is written almost with a tongue and cheek sentiment towards pregnancy. The author is obviously a devoted mom to four, but has the ability to step back and look at both the comical as well as practical issues surrounding pregnancy. With such an enourmous amount of change occurring in both your physical and mental being, it's great to know your not crazy and be able to smile through so many of these changes, that the author so perfectly describes. I have actually sat on my train ride to work or my couch at home and laughed out loud at the humor with which the author writes.(And, trust me , an occasional good laugh you will need)! Please understand this book is not to be used as a true health and development guide with regard to you or your baby. However, there is extemly practical advice covering everything from the "horror" of materninty clothes to what to pack on the way to the hospital.

Summary: The humorous side
Review: I just finished reading this book -- which I didn't buy based on what I read of other people's reviews. I found it amusing (some things more than others) and it certainly did point out some of the more grisly aspects of pregnancy and delivery that my other books skipped -- and frankly, I would rather know what MIGHT happen than be surprised and horrified if it does and I wasn't expecting it! Also, it can be reassuring to see that all those peculiar thoughts and worries that have been floating around in your brain are perfectly normal. If you have a limited budget for purchasing books for your "pregnancy education" this probably isn't a wise choice, but if you can borrow it from a "girlfriend" or a library, it is worth a read.

Summary: If I could give it 0 stars I would.
Review: This book was a bore! I read lot of books during my pregnancy and this one was THE WORST! The "Girlfriend" who wrote it is full of herself and not every pregnant woman wants to be pregnant with a nasty attitude! I threw my copy away! Go get What To Expect When You Are Expecting. At least it is full of educated opinions and fact. This woman wrote about things she obiously had no real information on. This book is all opinion and no fact! If you read through What To Expect as quickly as I did you will need a book for the second half of your pregnancy... go get What To Expect From The First Year and What To Expect From the Todddler Years. Like in school it is always good to read the chapter before hand.. so go for it!

Summary: For those who can't do anything without their "girlfriends"
Review: I found this book cutesy and annoying. This writer is not my "girlfriend", thank you; she's an author with a gimmick who hopes to make a buck.

I'm happy and relaxed about my pregnancy and all of its not-so-appealing aspects without someone to tell me to feel that way. Although I suppose this book would appeal to the sort of woman who can't do or feel anything without her girlfriends telling her what to do or how to feel -- if you're that sort, this is the book for you.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great Resource!
Review: This is a great book. It should be on the must read list for every pregnant woman! It gives practical advice on just about everything, truly just like your girlfriend would! Only this girlfriend did tons of research and has 4 kids of her own! I highly recommend this book!
