Rating: Summary: Funny and helpful book Review: The perfect book to read if you are looking for support from those who have been there, and not just the cold hard facts that you read over and over again in other pregnancy books. I found this book to be extremely helpful, especially since none of my friends have been pregnant yet, and therefore can't offer advice. But I will be sure to pass this book along to them when the time comes.
Rating: Summary: Progesterone anyone? Review: I loved this book. I am now in my fourth month of pregnancy, and found the book about a month ago in a bookstore in Munich (germany). I have been in hospital twice because of "progesterone poisoning" (I love that expression) and thought I would never ever stop feeling sick again. This book made me start believing that I really will wake up one morning thinking about breakfast instead of "where's my bucket?". I'm a lot less scared now, and I have re-learned that you shouldn't believe everything your doctors tell you. So, if you're pregnant, and feel that you have lost your old body to this replacement that came without a manual, buy this book, trust me, it really helps to put things into perspective.
Rating: Summary: Surviving pregnancy through humor Review: My baby will be one week old tomorrow, so I have a rather fresh perspective on this book. For nine months, I read "The Girlfriend's Guide", "Your Pregnancy Week by Week", and of course "What to Expect When You're Expecting". I had many more books at my disposal, but these three together covered everything I wanted to know. The Girlfriend's Guide offered true-to-life humor and comic relief from the day-to-day life of pregnancy. If I had to pick one chapter that was most helpful, I would have to say "Baby Stuff" was invaluable. Buy "What to Expect" for a scientific resource, but make sure you also have "The Girlfriend's Guide" to help retain your sanity.
Rating: Summary: Throw out the factual pregnancy books Review: This book contains almost all the answers that you may have when you find out that you're pregnant. Above all they are delivered in a no nonense launguage with humour which is just what you need when you've just found out your world is about to be turned upside down. I found information in this book which was nowhere to be found in so called factual pregnancy books. Vicki Iovine constantly reiterates that her book is totally subjective and although I was planning a homebirth I found her honesty and guidance was priceless. Subsequently after giving birth the only surprise I had was that I had a boy!
Rating: Summary: A Great way to ease the nervousness Review: I read this book after learning of my first pregnancy. It helped ease the nervousness I felt about the changes that I was about to go through over the next 9 months. I highly recommend it for any first time moms to be.
Rating: Summary: Witty, accurate and fun to read Review: I enjoyed The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy because it made me laugh, it made me nod my head in agreement and most importantly, it made me realize I really wasn't crazy with some of the things I was thinking, feeling and doing during my pregnancy. If you can laugh at yourself, you will enjoy The Girlfriends' Guide. Not everything Ms. Iovine says will ring true for you but I imagine many things will. If you like books like this one that contain the "real truth" about pregnancy, you may also enjoy We're Pregnant!, a realistic, down-to-earth look at life as expectant parents from the viewpoint of both an expectant mother and an expectant father. The two books together will give you a true idea of what to expect as your pregnancy progresses.
Rating: Summary: The Girlfriends' Guide To Pregnancy and her whole series. Review: Her books are so enjoyable to read and give honest down to earth advice too.She now has a column in a baby magazine, but I don't remember the magazine's title.I'd love her articles compiled in another book too!Her interactive CD should make for a great Baby Shower present!
Rating: Summary: It was fun Review: Its pretty clear that the author is relating *HER* perspective, you may not share it. But if you consider pregnancy a means to an end and not the defining nine (ten!) months of your life, you will probably enjoy this book very much.
Rating: Summary: The essential pregnancy companion Review: A friend sent me this book early in my pregnancy, and I read it cover to cover immediately. Then it resided on my night table (where I revisited newly relevant passages) until it was supplanted by "The Girlfriend's Guide To The First Year." I found it to be very comical, in a warm, reassuring and friendly way. While Vicky is definitely a little too preoccupied with her size 4 body, who among us is not a bit insecure in our body image, no matter what size we are? The point is, this is not a serious reference book. There are many of those available and you should have at least one. This book instead will make you realize that you are not alone; that the wonderful and yet utterly strange things you are experiencing are not unique. At the same time you feel that your complete absorbtion with your own little world is validated-Vicki tells you-"we've all been there!" If you are the first among your sisters and friends to be pregnant, you need this book! If you are not the first, well, its always nice to have new friends.
Rating: Summary: The Girlfriends Rock Review: Great book and a great change from the "written-in-the-80's-by-a-doctor-techno-journals." The book is written in a girl-friendy conversational style and, Vicki, the author is very funny in her observations. It was refreshing to read her "oh yeah, right" reality checks on many things but I was surprised when I read the back flap that lists her accomplishments. Wow. So much for that reality check. All this AND she writes too! Oh yeah, and has 4 kids...
