Rating: Summary: Really everything your Dr won't tell you Review: I can't recommend this book highly enough....though it isn't for anyone who is seeking technical medical information. Rather, it is the most PRACTICAL and relevant pregnancy book that I have ever encountered.
Rating: Summary: Great Gift for an Expecting Mother Review: I bought this book when it was first published. My husband and I laughed as the author told us what to really expect from my pregnancy. I passed along my book to a friend when she discovered she was expecting. As other friends began having children we have purchased it for them as well. It is a matter-of-fact and comical approach to pregnancy knowhow and expectations. Much more readable and enjoyable than other pregnancy texts.
Rating: Summary: A Must on your Pregnancy Reading List! Review: What a great book! As the title indicates it tells you all those little things the Doctor "forgets" to tell you and you are probably too embarrassed to ask. I would not call this a reference book (for that purpose I would recommend the Sears pregnancy book) but it is wonderful in addition to one. This will definitely cover most things and make you feel good about them and about yourself. Ms. Iovine has a great sense of humor. This book will just make you laugh out loud - especially when you come across a perfect description of something you are just experiencing. I tell all my friends who are pregnant to get this book. I loved it and read it two or three times during my pregnancy!
Rating: Summary: The most "normal" book about pregnancy I've read! Review: Reading this book IS like sitting around with your girlfriends while they lay it all out without mincing words. I'm totally freaked out about being pregnant & giving birth & reading this book has provided many well-needed laughs!
Rating: Summary: a must have, even if you aren't a "first timer"! Review: This book truly tells you all that your doctor won't! I read it even after I had my first 10 years ago, and it calmed a lot of fears. Vicki Iovine has a wonderful way of making you feel at ease. I almost laughed at the end when I read that she was a Playboy model. I thought it was a joke. She is hilarious!
Rating: Summary: I didn't find this book very funny Review: This book had some useful commentary and I liked that she used her friends as examples, but mostly I thought the jokes were pretty obvious and cheap. I didn't find it clever at all. I also couldn't believe that she recommended no exercise during pregnancy. Exercise kept me fit and relaxed during my whole pregnancy and it was very easy to get back in shape after delivery. Overall this was a big disappointment.
Rating: Summary: Lighten up! Review: I can see how some reviewers felt that Vicki Iovine was a bitter, self-centered woman who was only concerned about her appearance and thus was not worthy of becoming a mother. Humor can be a difficult thing to sell, because no type of humor appeals to EVERYONE. Unlike those reviewers, however, I delighted in her humor. From what other reviews look like, so did a large majority of the readers. We're going through pregnancy (that's why we're reading this book, right?), and we often see and hear things that worry us. If there is time when humor is needed, now is the time! I would recommend this book highly as a supplemental pregnancy book -- you know, not as THE pregnancy book you would read during your first pregnancy, as it is not a source of medical references, but something you can go to, in those instances when you desperately need a lift. And there will be LOTS of those instances.
Rating: Summary: wonderful humorous supplement Review: I thought this book was a great find, but I would also recommend reading other more "serious" books about pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy isn't glamorous, but it sure is an adventure. I think V. Iovine captured that spirit in her book. Plus, I was really encouraged by the concept of girlfriends and sought out my very own support network of new and experienced moms!!
Rating: Summary: Talk about a "Material Mom" Review: How this woman had four children of her own and wrote a book so down on pregnancy I will never know? Sure some aspects can be difficult and take a bit of getting used to depending on how your pregnancy is going, but I feel that writing such a superficial and unrealistic account of pregnancy is a bit out of control. A woman who is too concerned about her outside appearence shouldn't be having children in my oppinion or creating nonsense to make other women feel worse about themselves at a vulnerable time. It shows a huge amount of selfishness not well suited for how things change when you become a parent. (Unless you just breed and hire nannys) Pregnancy and motherhood is such an important and wonderful time in our lives and this lady is worried about her weight gain!? What did you expect? You're pregnant. I do give it one star for a couple of funny bits. As for the consumption of alcohol while pregnant. Although studies haven't been able to prove that having the occasional glass of wine will or will not hurt the baby, it's still a huge risk. Personally, as a mother pregnant with our second I would never take that chance. It's irresponsible any way you see it. In short, you're better off finding a book that celebrates this time in your life with some real medical facts. Giving and creating life is a miracle, not something to whine about beacuse you might not fit into your previous size of clothing. To the author: If you think you were just being honest and trying to pass something of importance on to future moms then I think you failed. This book doesn't nearly describe the REAL joys of pregnancy and being a mother. Merely the complaints of a woman who clearly does not count her blessings unless they come in the form of a checkbook, beautician, or plastic surgeon.
Rating: Summary: Scary and brutally honest, but fun and easy to read as well Review: I'd heard good things about this book, and all of them were true. The author tells you all the horrifying and wonderful things you need to know about pregnancy in a fun, funny way. I have to admit to being a great deal more nervous about pregnancy after reading this, but I also felt better prepared. The one thing I remember most about the book was that is said most women have "pregnancy amnesia"---as soon as labor's over they "forget" all the terrible parts of pregnancy. This, the book argues, is why your mother, grandmother, aunts, and friends will deny everything the book tells you about pregnancy: they've all forgotten it themselves! I found this to be very very true. Definitely pick this book up. It's a fast, easy, fun read and even if it scares you a little, you'll be well prepared for what's ahead.
