Rating: Summary: A must-have for 1st timers Review: This is my first pregnancy, and a friend sent me this book because she got it as a gift for her first pregnancy. I can't imagine going through my pregnancy without this book. Every awkward and embarrassing question is answered in this book, in a frank and often humerous way. I'm not an avid reader, but couldn't wait to get home from work and relax while reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Funny, easy reading during your pregnancy Review: Good light reading to take a break from the other maternity books out there. This book was given to me by my co-worker midway through my pregnancy so I had a chance to reminisce and laugh about how true some of the advice given in the first trimester. It also gave me good advice on preparing more realistic maternity and baby shopping lists for the second and third trimester. I look forward to passing this book on to a newly pregnant friend.
Rating: Summary: Halfway to a perfect baby shower present! Review: Get this for the mother, and Breathe! A Guy's Guide to Pregnancy for the father, and you're done. A perfect baby shower gift for your friends. Unless, of course, your friends are humorless wankers. In which case, why exactly are you hanging out with them?
Rating: Summary: EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE to working women! Review: I bought this book because so many people, including reviewers here, said it would be helpful. The book has been nothing but offensive and horrifying. Vicki Iovine, the author, is a former Playboy centerfold model who scored herself a rich music producer husband and views the world through playboy bunny housewife eyes. A complete idiot, she never considers that maybe some of her readers actually WORK FOR A LIVING rather than sit on their butts and be pampered by rich husbands like she is. Here are some of the gems of wisdom this...imparts: - The worst thing you can do during pregnancy is cut your hair! (G-d forbid! Omigosh! Awful!!) - Don't worry if your husband is too busy to come to your doctor's appointments -- it is really great and special to have an important, busy, overpaid husband like she has! Lucky you, girls, he supports you with money and prestige instead! - Not once during the ENTIRE chapter about "Telling people that you are pregnant" does it occur to Playboy Vicki that maybe the reason that we can't tell that we are pregnant is because we WORK for a living, and it would put us in jeopardy at our jobs. Instead, she talks about telling your "girlfriends" (of which she has many, since she has zillions of nannies and of course doesn't work for living), your mother, your husband, etc. No where does it contemplate, telling your co-workers or boss! - She tries to pretend that she is budget-conscious, but it is extremely clear that she is operating on a budget that has no end. References to furniture, breast pumps, etc etc etc are rife with suggestions to just "go ahead and spend the extra money" as if that is an option for everyone. As a working woman who struggles daily with issues of pregnancy while at work, this book was the LAST THING I ever wanted to pick up. I am proud of my contributions to the work force and to the company I work for, and never do I aspire to be like Vicki Iovine, former Playboy-model turned so-called author. Ugh.
Rating: Summary: Funny - But Too Negative Review: If this woman had such a hard time with pregnancy, why did she have so many kids? I just had a baby, and have many friends with babies, and none of us had the plethora of problems she seems to have had. Some of the advice is just bad - like exercise doesn't help you have a healthier pregnancy and labor. I don't know any doctor who would agree with that. The book definitely has some funny moments, so read it for the humor if you want. Just don't rely on it for advice or let it give you a negative view of pregnancy.
Rating: Summary: A Welcome Respite from all of the Factual, Serious books! Review: Iovine gives no medical advice, or explanation of what is happening through a pregnancy. She tells you that up front. It is a wonderful departure from scary, technical information written in medicalese. I enjoyed this book immensely as I needed to find something lighter, and more relevant to every day life on the subject. To know that you share the same horror as other women to notice your first hemmhoroid, the discovery of how gassy one may become, and to know that we've all coped with public sickness is priceless! To add some fun to your seriousness, I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Pregnancy Review: The book was a delight. It was nice to see the humor in things, and get a "girlfriends" advise without even having to open your mouth. For me it was a learning experience. I highly reccomend this book. I purchase a new copy for each of my girlfriends when I find out they are pregnant for the first time.
Rating: Summary: Overrated Review: This book is completely overrated. The jokes were cheap and obvious, and the advice was poor at best. The only decent message from this book is that pregnancies are different. She tells stories about 4 or 5 of her pregnant friends that are good examples of this, but the friends seem made up just to illustrate the point. Overall I found it to be a real downer. There's a lot to laugh about during pregnancy, but this book doesn't really capture it.
Rating: Summary: Misery Loves Company Review: This book was given to my pregnant wife by a friend. It seems to be the commentary of a bitter woman with a disrespectful husband saying, "If you have a baby, you'll look and feel as bad about yourself as I do, so don't bother trying." Together, we know many woman, who went through pregnancy and look incredible now. Likewise, we know many men who sincerely love and support their wives before, throughout, and after pregnancy. Read this book if you enjoy biting, nasty humor.
Rating: Summary: Good honest read Review: This book provides all the "fine print" that many other books fail to acknowledge. It has information most about what is going on with YOU the pregnant woman. It is honest and upfront, written like a personal pregnacy survival book from a friend to you. It eased my mind with providing information about certain tests and procedures that I was afraid of (amniocentesis for one). This is a very personal book and I enjoyed that it was not so much a reference book as a personal aid. This book however doesn't satisfy questions like "what's going on inside me with the baby?" and doesn't provide medical advice, THOUGH YOUR GREATEST SOURCE FOR MEDICAL ADVICE SHOULD ALWAYS BE YOUR OB/GYN!!!! "What To Expect When Expecting" is a better book for medical advice, but this book is great for mommy's mind.
