Summary: Save your $, borrow it from the library
Review: The reviews on here rave about this book. I do not agree. The book was amusing and funny (also a bit scary) but I certainly wouldn't follow the advice in it, unless you have a lot of extra $ and time to throw around. The advice and information wasn't very practical. If you want practical advice and a down to Earth conversation about pregnancy talk to your own friends, you're much more likely to have something in common with them than Vicki Iovine.

Summary: good book!
Review: I really enjoyed this book. Iovine gives all of the information we need but are afraid or embarassed to ask, with a sense of humor. This book is geared to the married pregnant woman, so if that is not you a lot of the information will be irrevelant. She also strongly advocates the use of drugs during delivery. This is not a medical guide nor is it supposed to be, but it is a wonderful supplement to those you already have.

Summary: I want to hate her but I can't
Review: As a former Playboy model and wife of mega-millionaire record mogul Jimmy Iovine, Vicki would normally invoke my scorn--what does she know about gaining serious weight gain and all the mundane problems of pregnancy? But Vicki--I really do think of her as my girlfriend--is so smart, witty, and self-deprecating that I love her in spite of it all.

This is so much better than the plodding, humorless, guilt-inducing What to Expect books (the ones that tell you can enjoy the occasional scoop of non-fat frozen ice milk and be "extremely wicked" and have a thin sliver of pie once a week). Vicki seems to be telling us, even as we pack on the poundage--LIGHTEN UP! It only lasts nine (make that ten) months!

While this may not be the only preg. book you'll need, it'll be the only one you'd read again after you deliver.

Summary: Some good and some bad advice
Review: I would have never thought about needing to put my new son in snap on shirts (versus onsies) at the begining due to his belly button, but I do not like her attitude towards natural labor. She almost makes herself sound ignorant. At one point, she says something to the effect of why bother with natural labor, pain medication is wonderful.
Also, her husband's hands off attitude is disturbing. This may be an OK book for women who will allow their care providers to make all the decisions and not bother to learn about the risks of medical invention. But I would not recommand this book to a woman who plans on educating herself. The author's attitudes and opinions can be annoying.

Summary: Best Book on the Shelves
Review: While Vicki Iovine may not be overly technical about pregnancy, this was by far the best book I have read. As a first time mother I can't give it enough praise, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for something beyond "What to Expect..."

Summary: Not the only book you should read, but entertaining!
Review: I read this book at the beginning of the 3rd trimester and while I agree with others that it is a little negative, and she does focus a lot on how you look and feel, I needed to hear it! I needed to hear some justification for the bad feelings about pregnancy and know that it was ok to feel that way and LOVE being pregnant and having a baby at the same time! I laughed so hard I cried through most of the book. Don't use this for your medical reference, get the What to Expect book or something, but do read this for some comic relief! And watch out for the chapters about labor, delivery, and post pardom- I bawled my eyes out and was totally terrified, but it was probably a good thing because I was pleasantly surprised with how not horrible it ended up being.

Summary: Iovine's book is narrow-minded and insulting.
Review: My sister received this book as a gift last year while she was pregnant. She began reading and switched to another after seeing all of the husband references. She is unmarried by choice, and disliked being spoon fed stereo-typical ideals regarding family, when all she wanted was to learn about pregnancy. I learned that I was pregnant not too long ago and someone recommended this book, because we already owned it I decided to take a look. I am single as well, although not by choice. I would love to have a partner to share my pregnancy with, but that is unfortunately not the case. The author suggests in the opening parargraph of the book that babies are only to be celebrated under certain circumstances. I for one believe all babies, regardless of their parentage, deserve to be celebrated. This author should have considered the era and audience for which she was writing before alienating her book from many of the women I know.

Summary: Laughter and a big sigh, a must read!
Review: I disagree with those who say this book portrays pregnancy as a miserable experience. On the contrary! Until I logged on today, I'd never heard a negative review of this book. I feel that any pregnant woman will benefit from reading this, because Vicki Iovine makes you laugh out loud. She describes what you're experiencing, but magnified so that it's absolutely hilarious. Come on, even the most delighted pregnant woman gets uncomfortable, and it's so nice to have Vicki validate those feelings in her book. Suddenly, you realize you're not going crazy, that all pregnant women go through this. I read this book six years ago, and have bought it for every first-time mom I've encountered since then. This is a book that gets passed around until it's tattered. It's an easy, relaxing read, like watching a great chick flick with your best friends. And it's exactly that feeling that pregnant women need most. In addition, it's good, useful information with tons of humor spooned on top. A must read!

Summary: Great Advise in a down to earth way
Review: I thought this book was great. It is like talking to your sister about things that you didn't know you wanted to know. I laughed out loud many times and now that my baby is here and I am passing it to my girlfriend.

Summary: The Best Pregnancy Book Ever!
Review: My friend bought this book for me when I was 8 weeks pregnant. I loved the humor & all of the advice throughout the book. Before I read this, I started to read What to Expect. That only scared me because it mentioned the "M" word a lot & to a first time mom-to-be, I had enough uncertainties on my own. I didn't need a book to bring it up constantly.
The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy is a must have for any pregnant woman. It paints a great picture of what to expect in your changing body, your mood & even gives insight about what your husband will be going through.
And just a side note, yesterday we found out that we are having a little girl!
