Review: Although "Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family" has some good ideas, I'm a bit apprehensive about taking vegetarian child-feeding advice from a man who isn't a vegetarian. Haedrich's earlier books, such as "Home For The Holidays" (which was originally published by Bantam in 1992) use red meat, poultry and seafood--all no-no's for vegetarians. (Yes, even seafood is offlimits for veggies--real vegetarians don't eat it.) Furthermore, his children are mentioned very, very often in "Home for the Holidays," leaving me to suspect that they were not, in fact, raised vegetarian. "Feeding the Healthy Vegetarian Family" may have some good ideas for non-vegetarians who want to rely less heavily on poultry, red meat and seafood, but actual vegetarians may want to get thier advice from someone who's actually walked the walk, so to speak. I mean, someone who has really, physically, rasied vegetarian kids is bound to be more helpful than someone who's just trying to make a buck off vegetarianism's current trendiness.

Review: As a long time vegetarian with two small children, I'm always looking for ways to make good healthy veggie coooking "family friendly". This cookbook succeeds marvellously! In a few short months the pages have become well loved--the tahini dressing is now a staple in our fridge, the mushroom/wild rice soup (vegan, at that!) in much demand in the winter months. I have yet to make something that didn't turn out delicious!
Haedrich has an enjoyably readable style, and the anecdotes about his children's likes and dislikes and family traditions make this a "read it cover to cover" cookbook. There are plenty of suggestions about how to modify recipes for picky kids (perish the thought!), or how to perk up the same recipe to make it more "grown up". I love the author's understanding of what it is really like to cook with a family--no pristine test kitchen recipes here.
If you are looking for delicious, hearty, healthy and kid-friendly dishes, this is an absolute gem!

In response to a previous reviewer, Mr. Haerdrich (a vegetarian himself) and his wife (also a vegetarian) have raised their children as vegetarians. This is all noted in his introduction. I am excited to take the advice of such an expert and to share the wonderful results with my family.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: My favorite cookbook Review: I love this cookbook and my family loves what I make with it. The recipes are easy, straightfoward, use familiar ingredients and every dish I have tried has come out perfectly. He includes a nice selection of vegan recipes which are nice to have since many vegetarian cookbooks use so much dairy.

Review: I too first saw this book at the public library and afterwards had to have it for my own. This book has really given me a lot of range for cooking veggie. Most veggie cookbooks call for things you can only find in specialty stores and yield dishes that husbands nor children will touch. I have really appreciatted a veggie cookbook that also comments on how to get you kid to like veggie food. It made me happy to find a pizza SECTION instead of some off the wall pizza recipe! This is a great cookbook for veggie and non-veggie families alike as it truly considers time, taste and expense.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The best family vegetarian cookbook I've read! Review: I've been a vegetarian for over eight years. I now have 2 children, and it's been a struggle to find recipes that they will eat. This is the book I've been looking for! It is a realistic approach to feeding a family vegetarian-style meals without breaking your pocket book or using weird ingredients that you can never find at your local grocery store. I've tried several recipes from this book so far, and all have been winners. The only caution I would give is that some of the foods seem a little high-fat to me, but there is not a nutritional count done for each recipes, as I have seen in some other cookbooks. But that's the only complaint I have--overall, it's my favorite cookbook right now!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Practical, Kid-Friendly Cookbook Review: If you're looking for a healthy, easy, vegetarian cookbook that is kid-friendly, you found it!! Ken Haedrich's recipes are absolutely delicious, simple and creative. Every recipe I have made has been a winner! And unlike most cookbooks, I have not had to alter any recipes to make them delicious. The vegetarian chili is the best I've ever made or eaten! It's so child friendly, even our 3 year old tried it and went back for more. Ken creatively works vegetables into the dishes that most kids (and husbands) would not eat, but they come back for more servings. The recipes do not require a significant investment of time as do many other vegetarian cookbooks, but like all good meals, planning is necessary.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This book makes it EASY to be a vegetarian! Review: My husband and I have only been vegetarians for three years and this book certainly contributed to our success when we were first starting. The recipes are incredible, hearty and traditionally-based. The ratings of many dishes by his family add to the charm of the book as well and are really good indicators of how delicious the item is going to be to you and to your children. We highly recommend this cookbook to any family - you don't have to be vegetarian to love these dishes!
