Rating: Summary: I love this cookbook - and so does my husand Review: I am on the Heller's program, my husband is on Atkins and my daughter is a fussy vegetarian. No one is our house has time to cook and this cookbook was perfect for all of us.I'm having my parents-in-law over and serving recipes from this cookbook only - and they are fussier than my daughter. All this to say - this is a great cookbook for the dieter and the non-dieter, too!Fast and simple and so delicious. I'd recommend it highly.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money!.. Review: I am so angry about this cookbook that I have a good mind to write the Hellers and demand my money back! Not only for the cost of the book, but also for the cost of the food that I wasted when I tried to prepare one of their recipes. I followed the Left Bank burger recipe to the letter, and it was just awful. We ended up feeding it to our dog! First of all, with all that liquid (cream, eggs and sherry), the meat won't form a patty! I believe that this recipe was not properly tested. I am afraid to try anything else for fear of wasting my time and money again. Besides, nothing else really sounded that new or innovative -- most of the recipes just direct you to roll up some meat in lettuce and call it a sandwich. One actually suggests that you roll up leftover chicken in lettuce for breakfast -- I paid[money]to be told to use lettuce as a bread substitute? Save your money and stay away from this ridiculous cookbook!
Rating: Summary: Not exciting, but hopefully useful Review: I am somewhat disappointed with this book. Many of the recipes are very similar to the things I have been cooking while on the diet anyway, so I didn't get the variety that I was looking for. I also felt like many of the same flavorings and techniques were used in many dishes which I think would get boring after a bit. How many times can you really wrap something in lettuce? You can tell that the book is not written by people who write cookbooks. Recipe steps are often glossed over and in some I'm not sure whether the veggies should be cooked or raw. I was also amused by the number of recipes that had footnotes saying that one or more of the ingredients may not be compatible with the Hellers' Diet in the most recent edition. As an aside, there are only a handful of foods that I do not like; sour cream is one of them and makes frequent appearances in the recipes... :) I bought McCullough's book at the same time, and it looks like something more up my alley. The problem there is that the recipes aren't necessarily compatible with the Hellers' plan. It certainly looks like the McCullough book is a better cookbook; I just hope it proves to be useful.
Rating: Summary: Great, easy, fun, delicious recipes - just what I needed Review: I can't say enough good things about this book. The recipes are easy, fun, and delicious. I needed help to stay on my diet - I was almost losing motivation. Eating the same thing day in and day out. Now I feel like a new breath of air and motivation is in my life. I am so glad I found this book.
Rating: Summary: A Godsend! The perfect cookbook! Review: I cook for a family of five with five different eating programs. I'm watching my carbs, my husband wants lots of good hearty foods, my kids vary - one vegetarian, one junky food, one wants lots of everything. This cookbook does it all! Easy recipes that I can serve to everyone. Healthy choices and good food and I'm losing weight by the day. I don't know how I did without it before. And try the chicken paprikash. It's sooooo good.
Rating: Summary: KITCHEN STAPLE Review: I don't know what everyone is expecting. Who cooks from just one book? These recipes are terrific for anyone looking for some simple but tasty LOW carb meals, not NO Carb meals. The recipes call for lots of vegetables--spinach, broccoli, leeks, cucumbers, peppers, mushroooms, cauliflower.... What I like best about the Heller's program is that I can eat a variety of foods and don't obsess over calories. I would've like some nutritional info though.
Rating: Summary: Carbohydrate Addicts Cookbook Review: I enjoyed the cookbook but am disappointed because it does not list the carb content in any of the recipes and in addition there were no dessert recipes.
Rating: Summary: Commentary on some of the more recent reviews Review: I guess it looks like many of the reviewers don't understand the aims of this cookbook, and that is to follow the Heller plans, not the "Low carb of the week" plan that someone may happen to be on. Thus, the lack of nutritional information such as total calories, carbs, fat, cholesterol, etc... The Heller plans don't count carbs, don't count fat grams, don't count calories, etc... which is the beauty of their plans (post-Carbohydrate Addicts Diet originally published in 1993 and as the Hellers state is grossly outdated). If you read their later editions, "The Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program" or "The Carbohydrate Addicts Healthy Heart Program" (the latter being curiously absent from Amazon.com), you'll understand completely. Maybe this is not well documented in the cookbook, thus the reviews. SO, in summary, don't expect nutrition facts and don't expect it to fit squarely in with the old "Carbohydrate Addicts Diet" which does count carbs, and you'll make a more informed decision on whether this book is right for you. You really can follow their plans if only with this book, if you read between the lines, however!
Rating: Summary: No pictures Review: I hate cookbooks with no pictures in them. But, the recipes themselves are really easy to make. I am not crazy about the buffalo wings one but really like the other chicken recipes.
Rating: Summary: Finally, I like to cook again! Review: I have been on so many diets in my life--and all they ever did was leave me fatter, crankier, and hating to cook, because of all the weighing, measuring, and special foods I had to fix for me (that no one else would eat). I've been following the Hellers' Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program, with wonderful results on all fronts--weight down, cholesterol and trigylcerides down, energy up, creativity up, and mood soaring (good-bye, Prozac!)--but I was getting tired of fixing the same old "basic" proteins, salads, and vegetables for me and my family. This cookbook makes cooking FUN again. My husband and kids eat these recipes and don't even think of them as "Mom's diet food." (Mainly, because they are NOT diet foods--they are healthy choice foods that control my appetite and cravings, while allowing my body to release stored fat). Each night has become an adventure. I especially like the unusual ways spices are used--allspice in chicken, jalapenos in green beans, for example. Those who follow the Hellers' plans do not count calories, fats, carbs, or weigh and measure food--so there is no NEED for all this kind of information (as some other reviews suggested). We balance our meals visually, and can enjoy traditional carbs (again, in balance) during a one-hour "Reward" meal each day. This is truly a way of life, and for once, I am enjoying my life while losing weight. I don't even THINK of the way I eat as dieting anymore. It is just what I do to balance my insulin levels. And it's nice to no longer hate that daily chore--cooking. Thanks Drs. Heller! I'm so grateful.
