Rating: Summary: super baby foods Review: As a first-time mother, I found this book to be very helpful. I would never have had the confidence to attempt making my own baby food otherwise.It was great to have some point of reference for what, when and how to introduce solid food to my daughter. While I do try to eat healthy myself and avoid red meats, I am not quite as radical a vegetarian as Ms. Yaron is, and of course I routinely consult my pediatrician if I am unsure of anything. Nonetheless, the information has been very helpful to me to at least get me started. I also found the safe-cleaning-products section helpful.
Rating: Summary: More Than Just a Cookbook! Review: This book is so PACKED with information, it's hard to call it just a cookbook. But even if I wasn't a "mom", I would have bought it. Where else could I find how to make homemade wheat flakes and crackers and step by step easy, easy directions on baking bread. Well, maybe in cookbooks at the Health Food Store but not as fun, informative and simply put as this.
Rating: Summary: This is the most SUPER book! Review: I love the way it goes month by month to tell me what to feed my baby each month. ANd the tips are the greatest. Ruth Yaron really put a LOT of work into this book. Its the best investment I made so far.
Rating: Summary: Difficult to read, but comprehensive Review: I think you have to read this book several times in order to really understand it. It is incredibly long, incredibly complicated, in a small font, and not very linear. Also, I think it could make parents feel concerned about the health of their babies if they don't follow it perfectly. It makes feeding one's baby into a mammoth task! On the plus side, it has a lot of great suggestions that lots of my friends didn't know: info about food enhancers, the safe ages to introduce food to your baby, etc. I think that a lot of the recipes are for people who have nothing else to do but cook for their babies, but the food storage information is excellent. I would agree with the review that is concerned about the author's qualifications. I reviewed ALL of the advice I found pertinent with our pediatrician, who actually disagreed with a decent portion of it.
Rating: Summary: a great guide Review: I thought the book was well written and highly thought provoking. It provided a lot of guidance for baby's diet and insights into making the whole family's diet better. Yaron is clear about where she is coming from--a natural foods advocate--but the plan is flexible enough that you can carve out something that will work for you from the entire plan. I liked the nutrition section, the sections related to feeding babies at specific ages, and the tables on specific fruits and vegetables. A more extensive listing of the foods you can give baby to provide various nutrients would be useful. There is a short table, but the book would be more complete with an extensive listing designed for easy reference (the plan specifies that baby receive vitamin A foods and vitamin C foods). (The section on fruits and vegetables discusses which nutrients are in each food but this information isn't all together in one place by nutrients.) Yaron has done a lot of work for parents by setting out a good plan for raising a vegetarian child and shares many, many day-to-day tips. The text is easy to read, the cross-references are great, and her manner is enthusiastic.
Rating: Summary: My Baby Food Bible Review: Although I do admit the book does jump around a little... once you read the book and get used to the format it's really not that hard to find what you are looking for. This book is like my baby food BIBLE. In fact ~ I am here now to order one for my friend that just had a baby. Feeding your baby organic food is so important and the author really helped me when it came to buying the best foods for my baby. I also love the money-saving tips she includes.I didn't start my son on the foods here until he was 10 months old (a couple weeks ago) and he had no problem switching from the horrible, nutrient deficient jarred food to the healthy home made foods found in the book. ~~ Amber ~~
Rating: Summary: A Disappointing Book Review: When my baby decided to quit eating baby food at 7 months I had high hopes that Super Baby Food would give me creative guidance on different foods I could feed him. It did not. It pretty much assumes that your baby is a good little eater who will eat anything put in front of him. The book also is very conservative in terms of the timing of introducing new foods (no carrots, peas, squash, etc.) until 7 months. It is also VERY preachy about buying everything at health food and natural food stores which I found annoying. For example, Yaron insists that eggs should be purchased at natural food stores because eggs at other stores come from chickens that have had hormones and "live in a box". There is no explanation of why either of those things are bad for a baby's diet. The book is full of pronouncements about health benefits of various things with little scientific support or explanation (which Yaron acknowledges in some places). The book might be better if you are looking for recipes for your toddler or are a complete health food purist. If you have a younger baby, forget it and follow your pediatrician's advice and common sense.
Rating: Summary: Good advice but not well written and hard to follow Review: I use many of the principles in this book, but she does jump all over the place and inserts so much advice on every topic under the sun that this big fat book could be boiled down to less than 100 pages. Because it is unprofessionally written it makes me wonder about the validity of all of the (quite opinionated) claims made in the book. While you're trying to understand exactly what the Super Baby Food Diet is, (actually contained in about 10 pages at the end of section 1), you are led through a maze of her opinions and unrelated "tips." Still, I suggest you buy it, because between all the chit-chat, I need to refer to the recipies and appropriate foods to introduce regularly.
Rating: Summary: Every home with a baby should have this book! Review: One of the most challenging times in raising a child is when they are ready to start solid foods. This book provides thorough information on this stage in your baby's development. Ruth was very detailed in her descriptions and made everything idiot proof. I saved quite a bit of money by using the sections on making your own baby food and other baby products. I've had this book for 6 months and I still refer back to it every week for something new. It also has great sections for toddlers; snacks, crafts, party favors, etc. I'm sure I'll be using it for many years to come. Thanks Ruth for sharing your knowledge!
Rating: Summary: Not what it seems Review: This book jumps around so much it is hard to follow. You start to read one section, it then refers you to another page, usually in another section. I like to read one topic, THEN move on to another. There are not complete thoughts on one page in any section. I rate this book poorly, also because she is not even qualified to give this advice. I learned that thanks to the disclaimer on the first page. She keeps telling me to check with the doctor. I should have just did that in the beginning instead of wasting money on this book. On a good note, there are crafts in the back that will be of some assistance as my baby goes into to toddlerhood.
