Rating: Summary: GREAT guide for feeding babies healthy homemade foods Review: This book is the best guide I have found on how to feed your baby a healthy homemade diet. The book has more in depth info about how to make and when to start baby on certain foods than any other book I have read. It also has great recipies and other helpful natural ideas. My baby is a great eater and I credit that to Super Baby Food. You will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive, invaluable resource guide! Review: Wow! Where to start? First, I bought this and The Healthy Baby Meal Planner by Annabel Karmel at the same time. While Karmel's book is "prettier" and has some interesting looking recipes, this one far outweighs it as a resource tool, which was what I was looking for. I admit, I was intimidated at first by the sheer volume of information contained in this book, but after reading the author's suggestion on how to read the book, I felt that I had a better handle on it. The book is very well organized, from when to introduce specific foods, to how to prepare and store them (one of my favorite sections!), to the recipes, which I really haven't gotten to yet. Yaron doesn't make the reader feel guilty about having a few jars of commerical baby food on hand, so in this sense, she's not militant about doing Everything from scratch. The only area which I feel is a bit weak is the very short chapter on meat, which she states she added for the "readers who (no matter what I say!) have decided to feed it to their babies." Yaron is very obviously a vegetarian, which is fine, however, I (and many other moms) are not. This does not stop me from enjoying her book, and I probably will start preparing more grains-and- legumes meals as a result of what I'm learning, for variety, if not for the health benefits. This is definitely the book to own if you can only buy one!
Rating: Summary: What's all the fuss about? Review: This book was recommended to me, and I'm sorry that I bought it on line, rather than previewing it in a book store. If you're looking for a good resource, this is NOT it! The author has some very strong opinions about diet for babies, but she is not a nutritionist, she is not a pediatrician, she is no kind of medical professional. She bases her opinions on "my kids are big and strong ..." but it all sounds a bit arrogant sometimes. Aside from that, her dietary recommendations are a little out of the ordinary for most people (WAY too granola, and we are vegetarians!). And the real problem is that my toddlers don't like her recipes! We've gotten a lot of mileage from the macaroni and cheese recipe (but I suspect that most kid cookbooks can help with that). BUT her turkey loaf is so dry (mixed with wheat germ, etc.) that my kids spit it out. (I would too; it's like cardboard.) And the broccoli casserole ended up on the floor, as well. And my kids are great eaters! They're not picky. This book is very dogmatic with no real foundation for the author's recommendations. Read the other reviews from medical professionals; this author makes some big mistakes. But worst of all, the food is yucky! Unless you're comfortable with tasteless food served with dogma, I suggest finding another todder recipe book!
Rating: Summary: Excellent reference with a few short comings. Review: Excellent source for information about introducing, feeding and preparing solid foods for babys. Our daughter (6 months) has just started eating solids and we used this book to help us get ready. The book doesn't give much help if you want to introduce meats into your baby's diet. And has a chart with (possibly) some citrus and nuts being added into the babys diet before 12 months. I understand this may not be the best. The nuts are added because Yaron doesn't feed with meats and babys need protien (she also uses tofu). However, as with any book on your children, you must tailor it to fit your personal instincts, preferences and (of course) advice from your doctor. A must read for new health conscious parents who want the BEST foods for their infant. Enjoy the book our baby does!
Rating: Summary: Good reference, but some key inaccuracies Review: As a family physician and new mother, I bought this book with interest. Overall, excellent principles of healthy baby diet, and excellent ways of preparing baby food at home. However, I was astounded by several key things. -Yaron recommends feeding a baby nuts - she doesn't give a specific time frame to start, but talks extensively about how to prepare and feed them to "baby." Nuts are HIGHLY allergenic, they are definitely not recommended before the first year and longer after that if a mother can help it. I have heard of a child suffering from anaphylactic shock from eating home made peanut butter at 8 months. -Yaron recommends preparing Spinach and Carrots at home, these two vegetables are not recommended for home preparation because of their high concentration of nitrates. Baby food companies screen these two vegetables so that only those from areas of the country with low nitrates can be served to baby. -Yaron makes comments such as, "the good old days" when you can buy tofu in a refrigerated bin where you can bag your own tofu...well this was ended for a specific reason, IT ISN"T SANITARY. These glaring statements make this book one that I would not recommend for my patients. If you are aware of all the facts above and will double check some of her principles with other authorative text, then this is a good book on home preparing food in a wholesome, organic manner.
Rating: Summary: Super Baby Food Review: Excellent resource for new parents on how, what and when to feed their baby solid food. Especially wonderful because the author explains the healthiest way to prepare your own baby food using pesticide free produce and making home made porridge. my baby and i especially like the porridge as it has kept my baby soooo healthy .No diarhea, gas or constipation. you can mix anything into the porridge. i also enjoyed all the info on buying , storing , and preparing fruits and veggies. in the beginning she gives you step by step instructions on when to introduce new foods plus healthy extras to add in the food to make them more nutritious. All the recipes are SIMPLE and can be made in advance. There is no excuse your baby should not be eating this healthy way. i work full time and have no problem finding the time. i am a Women's health Nurse Practitioner and have seen first hand soooo many babies with illnesses that could have been prevented by using this diet as a guideline. Just using the porridge and healthy extras can do the trick. And the best part of all is my 16 mos old has never been sick. No ear infections, no bowel problems, no lung infections NOTHING. his growth has been amazing. he is so well adjusted, curious, sleeps well. Poops 3 times a day and it isn't sticky like many babies bowel movements can be. I just saw my Pediatrician 2 weeks ago and she could not get over how HEALTHY my baby is. She was amazed and was going to buy the book that day. Buy the book and use as much of the info as you feel comfortable using. ie. i still feed my baby meat and he still eats some store bought items, but the addition of the porridge and healthy extras really makes the difference for us. Healthy eating and good nutrition as it relates to a good immune system is not a new concept. i just feel many Americans are to lazy to investigate and change their habits. Please give this book a chance to give your baby an excellent start in life let alone the stress reduction you will feel from not having the average baby who gets sick 6-12 times a year.
Rating: Summary: good resource--skip the wacko stuff Review: This book is a great resource for making just about every type of baby food imaginable. Great tool if you skip some of the author's personal crusades against meat, etc. Even with that, though, I would recommend this book to my fellow moms (and dads) if they are interested in preparing some or all of their own baby food.
Rating: Summary: I wish I found this book a lot earlier. Review: I only wish I had used this book when my older children were infants. My third son is on the super baby food diet, and he seems to like the food cube food better that jar! I know I am am exposing him to lot of infections in the day care center, but he doesn't get sick like my first two did. I guess that maybe I didn't feed them the right stuff. I am telling everyone I know about this book so they can start their kids on the super food right from the start. For us mothers who need guidance (Most of us!), it is great! I love reading it and plan on feeding my husband and I the same great foods.
Rating: Summary: Super Baby Food Review: This is the BEST baby food book around. A must have for all parents!! I have referred to this book 100's of times....LITERALLY!! The receipes are great, the month by month guide for what foods to introduce next is extremly helpful, and the alphabetized list of fruits and veges is a life safer. The list is helpful, even in everyday cooking when you can't quite remember how long to microwave that squash or carrots. The book also has a list of every vitamin and mineral important to your growing baby. The book will tell you how much your baby needs and the best food sources to obtain those wonderful vits!! I recommend EVERY PARENT to buy this book. It will answer all your questions on feeding your baby the most healthy diet possible!
Rating: Summary: Not for the real world Review: Yes, there is a lot of useful information in this book. Please be forewarned, however, that the author is a fanatic who obviously does not live in the real world with the rest of us. She offers lots of tips, small and large, for helping to feed your child a healthy diet. Unfortunately, those tips get lost in tangents and side notes that are less than captivating. If you plan to feed your child the perfect diet, and you have the time and energy to prepare everything (even flour!) by hand, then this book is perfect for you. For those of us with less time and energy, it takes more time to find her time-saving tips than they save in the end. You may want to look elsewhere....
