Rating: Summary: great book Review: I thought this book was full of great ideas for homemade baby food. Although I did not do the super porridge, I did make a lot of baby food that my daughter loved, all fresh and organic. She gave good guidelines about when to introduce certain foods. I still flip through the book for ideas and will use it when our next baby arrives.
Rating: Summary: A bit too earthy crunchy for me... Review: Ms. Yaron proudly tells us how her baby happily eats brewers yeast. Ick, I say. This book may serve as a good reference for your shelf - the section listing how to prepare and serve each fruit and veggie is informative - but I have taken a more of a middle-of-the-road approach to feeding my son. I prepare fresh fruits and veggies, but rely on the store-bought, iron and zinc fortified baby cereals instead of grinding my own and then giving him supplements. Also, she is not an expert. Personally, I prefer "Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health : Birth Through Age Six" by Susan B. Roberts, Ph.D. and Melvin B. Heyman, M.D. Both of these doctors are experts in the field of nuturition, specifically infants. They not only give you practical, easy guidelines for WHAT to feed your child, they discuss in detail HOW to feed him to ensure you don't instill food hangups and weird emotional attachments. I found this to be a much more moderate approach that fits with my family's lifestyle.
Rating: Summary: Response to criticisms Review: I do think that this book is a wonderful resource. However, you really need to take the time a read through the entire book. I used a highlighter and put Post-its on important pages. If you are looking for big letters and bright pictures, this book does not have it!! I would also like to respond to two concerns written in an on-line review. The review said that the book recommended nuts but did not say when to use them. On pages 32 and 33 the author talks about nut allergies and recommends waiting until after the first birthday. She also has a chart revealing high risk and low risk allergy foods. In addition the review commented on cooked carrots and spinach and the risk of nitrates. The author addresses this by sending people to page 38 of her book where she has a warning about nitrates and even mentions that commercial baby foods test for high-nitrates in vegetables. This is not a book to skim!! I think it is wonderful. Even if you do not have time to make homemade baby food it is well worth it!!
Rating: Summary: Lots of great information for new and experienced parents Review: I love this book! It has much more useful information than other baby food books I have read. My daughter has been fed breastmilk and the super baby food diet for her first year and she has had only one very minor cold. Her older brothers had already had many more illnesses (colds, ear infections and stomach viruses) by the time they were a year old. I had previously made some baby food for my sons, but making the various wholegrain cereals was new to me. I also never would have imagined that avocado would be a favorite first food if I had not read this book. It is also not necessary to follow all of the advice and diet to get a lot out of this book. We are not vegetarians by any means, and I did buy some of those little jars of baby food, but this book has made me more aware of what I feed my whole family. I look forward to trying out more of the recipes and advice as my baby grows.
Rating: Summary: not user friendly Review: I borrowed this book from my local library, boy am I glad I didn't buy it. It is possibly the least user friendly book I have seen! I never did read the whole thing it was so dry. I'm sure some of her recipes and recommendations are good, but truthfully you could probably get the same from a different book. I'll be using someone else's book to feed my super baby.
Rating: Summary: the only baby food book you'll need Review: It's easy to be put off by the extremity of some of the author's suggestions. Not all of us have the time or patience to make all our baby's food by scratch, in bulk, etc., etc. I would definitely recommend it to parents of multiples, or those with children who have food sensitivities. That said, anyone who wants to know anything about preparing food for an infant or toddler will find the answer in this book. The price is very reasonable considering the multitude of information. Consider it a reference book on cooking or preparing anything for a child - from first cereals to kid-interesting meals, from birthday cakes to homemade play-dough!
Rating: Summary: Super Baby Food Review: What an excellent source for info on not only preparing food for your baby but for other things such as keeping your home safe and free from bad chemicals. It provides alternatives to commercial products that are potentially harmful not only to your family but to the environment. I found some of Ms. Yaron's suggestions for economizing a little extreme and a bit amusing. I know this book will become tattered from my frequent perusal of it. It is very easy to look up info you need.
Rating: Summary: Overwhelming and Some Misinformation Review: This book is FULL of great ideas and suggestions and directions. However, having said that, I gave my book away to my friend who wanted it. I found that it was way way to overwhelming for me. I felt lost to begin with, which is why I was picking up a book about feeding my baby. All this book did was to overwhelm me even more and make me concerned I was doing everything wrong. To top this off, I found some misinformation in this book. I think other reviewers spoke of this as well. Maybe it is just based on old information regarding feeding babies and will be updated sometime soon. One can only hope. I would carefully research and look at other books before buying this one. However, if you want the be all end all book of directions for feeding your baby, this may be the one you want.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Super Baby Food Book Review: Ruth Yaron's "Super Baby Food" is an excellent, well written, informative book. My son is six months old and I am excited and looking forward to the freezing and thawing method of storing baby food. Ever since I read this book I have told my neighbours and friends with young children to also read it. Ruth has done her homework on nutrition very well and many tips and informationn in this book are helpful not only for baby food but to cook, freeze and thaw food for the family too. She has written information in a clear, step by step manner easy to follow. I have read one or two other books from the library but I feel Ruth's book is truely the best. Ruth thank you for all the hard work in putting together such an excellent book !
Rating: Summary: Great guidelines to help make your baby's food Review: this book is great if you have any interest in making your baby's food. she has gone to great lengths to provide very knowledgable information in a easy-to-find format with thousands of extra helpful tips as you go. i do not necessarily agree with absolutely everything she saids (eg. only organic), which does not matter at all. she is incredibly resourceful and the book is now the only book i use to help me prepare my own foods. i have now recommended the book to many other moms and they have had equal success. keep in mind, you are the best person to make decisions about your baby...this book is an incredible resource but does not have to be used word for word. i think any person cooking in the kitchen can benefit, especially the little ones.
